Piece of Cake Crosswords is a proposed yearlong series of easy-but-fun crossword puzzles, one puzzle per week. These will be daily-sized (15×15) crosswords that have fun themes with no sneaky tricks. The grids will be filled with FAMILIAR words, phrases, and names, and they'll be delivered directly to your inbox every Monday morning. Finally: something to look forward to on Monday morning!
How easy is easy?
Some crosswords claim to be "easy" but are filled with obscure stuff like European rivers and actresses that haven't done anything big in years (I'm looking at you, Cheri OTERI). For instance, a recent Monday puzzle in a major outlet used EMIRS (clued as [Mideast chiefs]), SSGT [Two steps above cpl.], and APSES [Church recesses], none of which I would want to use in a truly easy puzzle.
Why are truly easy crosswords so rare?
The reason is that puzzles with only common, well-known answers are extremely challenging to make. The theme also needs to be easily accessible to everyone, and the answers have to be clued in a straightforward, unambiguous way. In Piece of Cake Crosswords, the clue [Low digit] for a 3-letter answer is going to be ONE, not TOE.
Can I try a sample puzzle?
Of course! Here you go:
The actual puzzles will be delivered in formats for both printing and solving on-screen.
What if I like hard puzzles, instead?
That's great! Maybe you want a warm-up puzzle before you tackle something tougher. Or maybe you have a friend or family member looking to start solving. If you'd prefer a more difficult challenge, check out my Puzzlefests. New one coming soon!
What the heck is a Puzzlefest, anyway?
Puzzlefests are what I call my interconnected sets of crosswords, which I've been selling through Kickstarter and my website since 2009. Each puzzle leads to a word or phrase, and all of those are used at the end to solve one final puzzle, called a metapuzzle. I've written 6 Puzzlefests so far, and their themes have related to holidays, travel, music, Vegas, college, and outer space.
Do you have any stretch goals?
Sure do! If I reach $30,000, I'll double your pleasure and double your fun by writing a second puzzle every week. This puzzle would have a slightly trickier, Tuesday-level theme, but the answers will still be as obscurity-free as possible.
What if I have more questions?
No problem. Just drop me a note here or through my website, and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.
Risks and challenges
I've been writing crosswords for over a decade now, and I've refined my process to be able to generate a puzzle every week without any problem. So I don't foresee any major issues with completing this project on schedule.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
