A letter from Alexandre Rockwell
There’s something new just hitting Kickstarter this week that I wanted to share with you all.
Long story short, my first film In the Soup — which won Sundance's Grand Jury prize back in 1992, the same year as Reservoir Dogs and Gas, Food, Lodging were there — was badly damaged in a theater screening a year ago, and an incredible indie distributor named Matt Grady (Factory 25) has just launched a Kickstarter (inthesoupfilm.com) this week to help fund the critical restoration.
Beyond restoring the damaged print and archiving it for future generations, this campaign has the ability to finally make In the Soup available on digital platforms as well as on Blu-Ray for the first time — a re-release just in time for its 25th Anniversary.
In The Soup is my most personal film. It has in it all the flaws and heart of a young artist going all in to express his passion and love of cinema. It’s so much part of me now that I feels like a magical dream I once had. So, I was devastated when I learned the film had been damaged, and that it's in this state and at the brink of potentially disappearing. We’ve spent a great deal of time and resources on the investigation into how to fix it, with labs around the world, and we’ve figured out it is possible. Unfortunately, the repairs cost more resources than we have access to, and after the inspiring experience with all of you, I agreed with Matt that Kickstarter is the perfect way to determine that there is a public interest in rescuing this film and making it accessible, and to get real fans directly involved in helping make this happen.
I know you guys care about film, and if you were interested in Little Feet and you haven’t seen In the Soup, I think you’d appreciate it.
If you choose to get on board, there are some great vintage artifacts from the making of the film as rewards, along with the download and a cool book-Blu-ray combo. And the cast is in full support of the mission, so there are a ton of rewards you’ll see on the campaign page from me, Jennifer Beals, Steve Buscemi, Sam Rockwell, and other supporters. More will be announced throughout the month.
Check out the video, which features Steve, Jennifer and Sam, and help us spread the word to other indie film lovers. Hope to see you there!
