PREPARE TO BE SPELLBOUND!
You have not seen anything like Dzieci Theatre’s MAKBET. A riotous clan from 'The Old Country' greets you with libations and divinations then takes you into the ‘box’ where they embark on their wild, ritualistic take on Macbeth. Shakespeare’s ageless tale of greed, omens, and foul deeds comes alive through the unflinching performance of a handful of actors who take turns spontaneously trading off parts, (quite literally!) at the drop of a hat. Employing haunting folksongs and chants from Eastern Europe, along with the poetry of Shakespeare’s verse, Dzieci’s MAKBET explores and explodes the very essence of theatre and storytelling!
“Theatre came from Dionysius, not Apollo, and Makbet is the first time I’ve ever seen true Dionysian theatre. Absolutely liberating!” ~ Russ Hudson, Executive Director of Enneagram Personality Types, Inc.
To celebrate our 20th anniversary, we will present a 5-week run of MAKBET. This exuberant, ritualistic production will be fully staged in a shipping container (intimately seating 40 people on stacked milk crates) at Sure We Can in Bushwick, Brooklyn, where it is set to begin performances September 6th and run through October 8th.
Sure We Can, a non-profit recycling center, community space and sustainability hub in Bushwick, Brooklyn has presented Dzieci for five seasons, and is now co-producing the premiere theatrical run of MAKBET. This provides a most unique environment for Dzieci to play in, and a performance space ingeniously outfitted from, that's right, an actual shipping container.
We invite you to witness, in this strange, extraordinary setting, what happens to a creative work that has been ceaselessly explored for over a decade. And we also invite you to help us get there.
Here’s our bottom line:
+ Travel – $300
+ Food – $400
+ Dry cleaning & repairs – $300
(you wouldn't believe what these costumes go through!)
+ Documentation – $500
+ On site supervisor – $500
+ Publicity & promotion – $3,000
TOTAL – $5,000
You might notice our budget doesn’t include artist fees. When we say bottom line, we mean bottom line. Dzieci has always valued process over profit (who else would spend over a decade in theatrical development?), but we're also celebrating twenty years of this work, and it would be wonderful to enter the next twenty with a little more security.
Donating above the $5,000 mark will ensure compensation for our artists, and beyond that will allow us to fully promote the 20th seasonal presentation of Fools Mass this winter.
So, yes, if we meet our mark, please continue to give, “Will be for to make most happy assemblage!”We invite you to Meet the Theatre – a TDF mini-doc on Dzieci!

More acclaim for MAKBET:
“Wildly entertaining…An intimately unruly and unforgettable experience… A production filled with passion, at times jarring but never false… Being in such close quarters…there is no room for an insincere reaction from the actors, and there never was …A new and exciting spin on a show we’ve seen a thousand times.” ~ Victoria Teague, newyorktheatrereview
"Triumphantly recreates the story of Macbeth in a shockingly unconventional way… six voices reverberate off the metal walls of the cozy container and fill the air pockets of the junkyard, creating an otherworldly sensation. Those lucky enough to attend Makbet will thank Fate for allowing them to end up at such an important theatrical experience!" ~ Jordon Anton, stagebuddy.com
Risks and challenges
Now is a critical time for creativity. Groups like Dzieci struggle to survive. Places like Sure We Can are scarce. More than ever, we need ceremonies that unite us, that dissolve the boundaries that divide us and reveal our essential humanity, that steer us away from knowing and open us to a world of mystery.
This is Dzieci’s work. It has always been our work. And we will not stop. We are relentless. We have forged a theatre that thrives on delving into the unknown. In performances, in workshops, and in our work of service with disadvantaged populations, we are continuously refining skills that develop spontaneity and presence. On one level this keeps things exciting (for us and for our audience), but on a more esoteric level, it creates an undeniable demand to continue searching, growing, and persevering in a life informed as much by Art as it is by Spirit.
For MAKBET, we're more than ready to meet the marketplace. We have our cauldron, our costumes, and our cast. All are well-seasoned. And we've already had three mini-runs in that shipping container at Sure We Can, which now feels like home.
But Sure We Can itself feels like home. We've been offering our work there for years, performing not only MAKBET, but Fools Mass, A Passion, and even an interactive Cirkus Luna. Sure We Can is largely staffed by an immigrant population, some of whom were, or are, homeless. They have been an extraordinarily supportive and nurturing community for our "Poor Theatre" to engage with, and our presence there has brought new faces into their landscape, some of whom have returned as volunteers. We are intent to have funds from this drive salary a member of Sure We Can for assisting this production.
Five weeks is a long run for Dzieci, the longest we've ever had for a single production. But we've been performing Fools Mass now for twenty years (talk about long!), and though our audience continues to grow, we have yet to enjoy a major review that could bring our work to a wider realm.
That's our biggest gamble this time around, so we have retained Ron Lasko of Spin Cycle Public Relations to help extend our reach. And your donations, plus ticket sales could continue to keep Ron at work for the twentieth season of performances of Fools Mass this Christmas season!
