Welcome to the Realm Of The Livingstones RPG on kickstarter!

Overview

The Realm Of The Livingstones game is a traditional role playing game, along the lines of DnD or Pathfinder. It is set in a high-fantasy setting. The game also functions as a bible study tool by way of peripheral mechanics that explore underlying themes in the game world. (More on that below.) The ROTL game can be played, without any of the bible study elements, just like any other RPG. The game has a rich world, and a full lore. If you love traditional RPGs, we think you will love this game.

We have spent a year developing the writings, art, gameplay and various other elements of the game. We spent three years prior to that play testing the various mechanics of the game with groups of gamers. This is a fun, compelling game set in a rich world.

How is it a bible study?

ROTL is a full-fledged RPG, but it also functions as a bible study tool. We wanted to give youth leaders and small group leaders a compelling play-based tool to assist them in leading their groups. With this RPG, a group can role play through a compelling game world and then discuss the thematic elements as they pertain to faith and scripture. The game world itself takes hints from scripture, much like the works of Tolkien or Lewis did. (It's more like Tolkien, less like Lewis. It's less "on the nose" as we wanted story, play and immersion to take center stage.)

The idea is, you play the RPG, and this sets up the group discussion and study. This is explained fully in the game books, with plenty of guidance. But it's a game, foremost, rather than an academic tool. We believe compelling play is a powerful learning tool, within itself. The Game Master's Handbook sets up the method of how to facilitate the study discussions. But such things do not have to be strictly relegated to a scriptural discourse, either. In truth, such conversations could be used to explore any number of facets of the human condition. After all, any RPG is an exploration of self at some level.

To describe it simply, when using the game as a bible study, you gather in your group as with any other RPG and the GM is ready to take the group through the play session. To begin, you discuss any scriptural themes/readings the GM set you up with in advance (there is guidance in the game materials). Then your group plays through the play session, as with any RPG (most likely, some themes from your readings or study will either emerge naturally in the session, or by means of the GM's orchestration). Afterward, you discuss how the various elements of the play session enhanced, challenged or reinforced the salient scriptural themes of your group. And BAM: You just played through a Bible study.

So, it's: prep, play, discuss. The various methods for how to best achieve this are all described, in depth, in the GM Handbook and Module. The idea is that the game should be compelling all on its own. The game should never be "watered down" or relegated to the sidelines in order to teach various precepts. Rather, the game play provides great study material simply by means of being a great game. And, with three years of play testing to our credit, we have found that ANY good play session will give cause for powerful discussion of Biblical themes afterward. In short, it just works. And this game puts the whole thing on rails with a sprawling world, compelling locations, high-stakes adventure and formidable NPCs.

Yes, but how is it an RPG? 

The game is a fully-functional RPG, with a compelling world. It is much like any other worthwhile RPG. It plays just like other RPGs. (Do you want to leave out the bible study elements, altogether? Be our guest. You won't be hindered. This is a fully-developed game world.) Our background in story development for games taught us one principle thing: it's all about story and world building. We have built a rich world, with plenty of opportunity for exploration and adventure, as would be the case with any good RPG. We will continue to expand upon this world, as well, offering game modules and companion materials far into the future. 

For the means of this initial kickstarter, we offer a fully-developed Game Master's Handbook, a fully-developed Player's Handbook and a first Game Module. These materials are complete and testing of printing and gameplay has been accomplished. These materials will guide you through creating your player character (avatar), instruct you on game play and leveling, guide you through the lore elements and main story aspects of the world, offer ideas for months worth of compelling quests, introduce you to both good and evil non-player characters (NPCs), and more. There are many illustrated maps, lengthy descriptions of places, races, castles, dungeons, terrain and secrets, and details about weapons, timelines and histories. And there is much more to come in future modules and companion books, if you find that you want to explore further.

How Far Along Is Development?

Development of the game materials is finished. The GM Handbook, Player's handbook and first game module is complete and ready to ship. We will continue to produce Game Modules and additional supplements, however, in keeping with the pattern of all good RPGs. There is a great big world to explore in ROTL, and we want to continue to produce quality game materials for many years to come.

Risks and challenges

There is very little risk to backers, as this project is complete. The Player's Handbook, Game Master's Handbook and the first Module are completely finished. Early test printings have been accomplished and the product looks great. In short, it's good to go.
