In Summer of 2019, I am recording my very first studio album. Until now I have spent my whole career working on the live aspect of my music through writing, arranging, touring and creating live music videos. I have been constantly learning - about myself, about the world around me and about my own creativity. I've always wanted to wait to make an album until I knew I was ready as an artist and more importantly until the art itself was ready. I really believe that now is the time for my first album.
The Producer / Tyler Duncan:
The album will be produced by Tyler Duncan. I have admired Tyler's work from afar for a long time. He has produced for and worked alongside some of my favourite artists including Vulfpeck, Theo Katzman, Notify, the olllam and Lake Street Dive to name but a few. Last summer, I had the amazing opportunity of bringing my band on tour to open for the olllam. Tyler and I instantly struck up a friendship. While on tour, we collaborated on an arrangement of "Craobhacha" - a song I wrote during my time living in London which I sing in the Irish language. Getting to know Tyler as a person and working with him on my song showed me that he fully understands and respects my music. He truly wants this project to be the very best it can be. His excitement when I asked him to be involved made me sure I had made the right decision.
The album will be recorded in Tyler's studio in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA. Tyler has an amazing studio in his home; a place where he knows every square inch of the space and how to get the absolute best sound from it.
My long time friends and band mates Martin Atkinson (keys) and Cein Daly (bass) will be joining me in Ann Arbour to record this album. Martin and Cein have been an integral part of everything we have achieved so far. I love and respect them deeply and I know the feeling is mutual. We work incredibly well together because we are like family. I'm so grateful to have them in my life and to get to share the experience of making music with them.
The album will feature some very special guest musicians - more to come on that!
Making an album is a very expensive process. Our kickstarter goal will only cover some of the overall cost - the remainder of which I plan to fund myself. Tyler and I have picked a dream team of people to collaborate with. He and I trust this team
The kickstarter goal I have set will go towards:
- Production Fees
- Engineer Costs
- Studio Time
- Some Musician Fees
I will be self-funding:
- Flights To USA
- Remaining Musician Fees
- CD/Vinyl Duplication
If we manage to surpass the kickstarter goal, anything that comes in will go towards the remaining costs.
In A Nutshell:
I am beyond excited to finally have reached a point where I know I am ready to make my first album. I've spent my whole life working towards this...even if I didn't always realise it. Since I was a child, I've immersed myself in music and I continue to learn from it every day. It's no longer just a hobby or even just a job for me. I'm constantly pushing myself into places outside of my creative comfort zone to make music that I believe is an honest reflection of the space around us and the space within us. I'm inspired by nature, by love, by our relationships with each other and by the inner relationships we have with ourselves. I'm proud to be Irish and I take huge inspiration from our language and culture. My goal with music has never been in commercialism or success. Success to me is the hard work and time spent creating art that moves me and moves others.
I'm hoping that you will come with me on this journey and help me make this album by donating to this kickstarter campaign.
Thank you for reading.
Risks and challenges
I have a dream team of people around me to help me with plans and preparations for this album. The aim is to get into studio in summer 2019. Scheduling issues with musicians could potentially delay things but because we are planning so far in advance we don't anticipate this to be a problem.
Any issues we may encounter will be communicated to you as soon as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
