About

Penpad is for students.
Penpad is for professionals.
Penpad is for anyone who uses a notebook everyday.

The idea is simple.  Take a quality notebook and add a secret compartment to store your pen.

What if the next time you walk to a meeting all you need to remember is your notebook?  Just one more way to simplify your life. Sure you could keep your pen in your pocket, until you forget and you're sitting in a meeting wishing you had a PenPad.  You could clip it to the cover, but then carrying another book, a presentation, or your tablet gets a little more complicated.

With the PenPad, its always flat and your pen is always there.

Penpad Features:

Secret Compartment: The defining feature of the Penpad is the "pen pocket".  The pen pocket is 5 5/8ths x 11/16ths inches.  Lots and lots of pens fit.  A few do not.

Covers: This is a hard backed notebook covered with a high quality leatherette. I wanted a covering that any professional could set on the conference room table and look the part.

Size: This is a standard A4 notebook.  That makes it 11.625" tall by 8.5" wide and 5/8ths tall.  Basically the size of a standard sized piece of paper in the United States.

Pages:  There are 100 pages of high quality paper. The paper weight is 80gsm which is very nice to write on.  That is slightly better than a Moleskin notebook which is believed to be ~72gsm. The pages are lined with 39 lines on every page - front and back. Basically its a college ruled page.

Bookmark:  We included a very sleek ribbon bookmark to quickly reference your current location in the notebook.  Sit down and get right to business!

PenPad Tweaks

We've learned a few things about the current design we need to tweak:

  •  A logo on the cover.  When I designed the pre-production units I didn't have a name or a logo.  A notebook really needs a way to deliniate the front from the back.  A small descrete logo in the bottom right corner will be perfect.
  • A slightly bigger pen pocket.  Like I said before, lots and lots of pens fit.  But some don't.  I'll never be able to fit every pen, but there are a few standard office pens (Bic) that just barely don't fit.  We are also going to add a small relief cut at the top to assist in removing the pen.
  • A few more pages.  A couple pens like the Lamy Safari are just slightly too tall.  Current plan is to add 42 more pages.  Why 42?  I'll let Wikipedia explain.  This should make the overall notebook 3/4" tall.

Stretch Goals

If this KickStarter projects meets the goal everyone would receive a black Penpad notebook with lined paper.  However we know KickStater backers love stretch goals and getting a product a little more customized.  So here you go!

If the the colored notebook rewards are unlocked there will be a KickStarter survey sent out after the project ends for you to let us know what color(s) you want.

Here is a picture of all the colored pre-production notebooks to give you an idea on color and the actual quality of these notebooks.

The PenPad Story

I sat down in my first meeting of the day, with my notebook, and shortly thereafter realized I had left my pen on my desk.

Sitting there without my pen, I had a "brilliant idea".  My idea was to cut a secret pocket in a notebook to store a pen thus solving all future pen conundrums for people across the world.

I walked out of the meeting, straight to a good friend who happens to be a mechanical engineer.  He said, "Yah, that is good (not brilliant) idea."  Two weeks later he walked into my office and threw the PenPad prototype on my desk.

Using an X-ACTO knife, 100 pages of a standard composition notebook had a pen pocket cut into each page. Other than it taking nearly an hour to cut all pages and the fact they don't line up exactly, it worked great.

We immediately started testing. Collecting feedback.  Optimizing the pen pocket dimensions. So many people told me that they wanted one, that I had to take the PenPad to production.  Being an electrical engineer and entrepreneur I had a good idea how to make this happen rather quickly, and ~4 weeks later we had pre-production units.

Risks and challenges

With pre-production models in hand and only a few minor tweaks to make to the notebook, I suspect this production run will go according to schedule. I do have 3 weeks of schedule margin (there are always problems you can't account for) in order to adapt the plan as things begin to unfold.

I am overseeing this project from start to finish to guarantee you receive your rewards as promised. If you're not happy with your PenPad I will do everything I can to make it right. I'm committed to being transparent throughout the entire project to get your Penpad delivered as soon as possible.
