About this project

Thank you for your interest in my documentary film, Microtia: My Family Story!

This is a story for hearing impaired and deaf people, as well as hearing people. Microtia is a rare genetic condition that affects ear development and hearing. My dad and sister were born with Microtia, but so far we have never had any other family members with this condition. My brother became a doctor to help people, especially his family. I became filmmaker to share stories of incredible people, including those close to me. This is my family story.

We all have challenges in our life, and my family taught me that finding humor in difficult situations, and having the confidence to laugh at ourselves helps us overcome our troubles. Through this film, I will explore my connection to my dad and sister, and learn more about their lives.

The funds raised on KickStarter will go toward costs of making this film. Some of them I have covered myself, but I need a little help to make sure I can put together the best film possible! Most of my family lives where we grew up in Utah, but I ventured out to Bozeman, Montana to study documentary filmmaking. The funds will cover the costs associated with getting my crew and I back to Utah for filming (think rental car, food, hotels). I also like to pay these people because they rock!

Other funds will help me hire actors and crew for the flashback scenes throughout this film. After filming is through, there is a lot of work to be done with editing the picture, animations, music, and the sound. I have some great ideas about how to change the sound so hearing people like me can understand something about what it is like to live with a hearing impairment, but this takes time and expertise I don't quite have.

The crew and I have interviewed my dad and sister, but we still need to shoot our reenactment scenes, as well as interview my mom, who is another important link in this story!

I need to fill the gaps between interviews, which requires time and another portion of the funds. I also need a composer for the music. For this video, I used "Inner Light" by Kevin MacLeod. Images and video came from the Wikimedia Creative Commons. I want to thank these contributors for content in the film above:

Risks and challenges

Possible challenges in completing this film include having enough time to gather footage and edit the picture and sound.

Weather delays are a possibility if I find I have to drive back to Utah.

Otherwise, I am confident about this project and look forward to hearing from you through Kickstarter or on the Microtia: My Family Story facebook page!
