Let’s be real. I am an obsessed triathlete. It’s that simple! The obsession began over 13 years ago. When I started competing in local sprint distance triathlons, then began coaching, and now I am a six time Ironman finisher.
As with many competitors I am always trying to find techniques and products that will make me faster and safer.
Then it happened. A triathletes nightmare. My first race of the 2013 season, I came out of the water slower than normal. I had a transition from swim to bike under 30 sec but dropped my sunglasses and finished 4th place. I realized that if I did not drop my sunglasses putting them on in transition, I would have been on the podium! AHHH!
During an Ironman training camp the following month, the rain would come and go. I was forced to constantly take my sunglasses/eye protection on and off all day. I dropped my glasses at least three times that day attempting to put them in my back jersey pocket. It was so frustrating! Not to mention time consuming! I wasn't the only one having this problem either.
The point here is that if I had a device that would attach my sunglasses/eye protection to my bike, that was easy and convenient, I would be faster on my triathlon transitions, increase safety, and protect my sunglasses/eye protection investment.
This is how I came up with and developed this BIKE SUNGLASSES HOLDING DEVICE that is:
Easy to install over existing bike components;
Sunglasses are held safely and securely;
Easy access during riding;
Faster triathlon swim to bike transitions;
Positioned for minimal aerodynamic drag (If any!)
Manufacturing is a difficult process. However, I can assure you that I am up for the challenge. Prior to putting together this campaign, I have been interviewing several companies that will be a part of my team. I am very particular when it comes to my needs, wants and timelines.
I have come to the conclusion that the best possible company to be a part of my team is Tech Products Company out of New Jersey. The company was chosen based on the experience, time frames, location and equipment available. To be frank, we spoke about bikes for over an hour. They understood bikes just as much as I do.
My Sketchup drawing along with photographs of the prototype was reviewed by Tech Products Company.
Based on my conversations with the senior engineer at Tech Products Company, we decided that the best course of action to meet my needs would be the following once this project is funded:
1) Have an internal kickoff meeting with the existing prototype and all drawings in hand.- Approximately 1 week.
2) Production of a 3D SolidWorks drawing based on our initial meeting. - Approximately 2-3 weeks.
3) Developing of the working prototype utilizing 3D printing at the Tech Products Company - Approximately 1-2 week.
4) Product testing and potential design revisions. - Approximately 3-4 weeks.
5) Production of the final product in ABS. - Approximately 3-4 weeks.
6) Shipping this amazing product to your door.
I do understand that we will run in to issues. However, since I am located within driving distance to the manufacturing facility, I can and will be hands on for the whole process. In addition, I am dedicated to have this product "MADE IN AMERICA".
I NEED YOUR HELP
Over the past several months, I have spent hundreds of hours developing this device.
It started from an idea, to a paper drawing, hand molded plastic design, refining the mechanics, designing all of the 3D drawings and submitting the patent application. I also spent countless hours shooting and editing the video, and much more.
Fortunately, because of my experience in triathlons, cycling and engineering, I was able to do most of this work by myself and saved money by doing so.
However, I have taken this indispensable product as far as I can on my own. This is where you come in!
I am so close to production. I received the PATENT PENDING status; the working prototype in moldable plastic is completed and I am ready to GO.
There is only one thing that is lacking, FUNDING. With your support, I will be able to complete the drawing in high detail 3D, manufacture and ship!
By following our campaign, learning more about me, and hopefully finding my idea awe-inspiring enough to back me with a pledge, you will help me to materialize all of my hard work – and get something really cool for yourself in return!
In a very general sense, your pledge money will help me to turn my prototypes into a sell-able product, but here are some specific areas that I plan to use the Kickstarter funds for:
Final product testing;
Tooling and other factory and production start-up costs;
Website design, logo and development;
Minimum Order Quantities – in order to keep one of our objectives (reasonable pricing) I need to have production runs with large quantities;
Development trips to manage and oversee production with my partners.
When it's all said and done, a successful Kickstarter campaign will move me expeditiously through the production process so that I can get you your rewards.

Risks and challenges
As with any project, there will be many risks and challenges. Since the crude working prototype is in my hands, made by my hands, I don't see any huge setbacks.
Being a triathlete, I appreciate the simplicity and functionality of the design along with the ease of use.
I know that we may run in to manufacturing issues, submission issues, and making slight changes to make the product better than ever.
However, I have been working with the same manufacturer and CAD designer for the past two months. We are on the same page and we are ready to get the ball rolling.
