Welcome to Geeked!
Geeked is an illustration-led quarterly magazine with an urban feminist slant on art, culture and gender. Who are we? We are women and men who locate ourselves in the LGBT and Straight communities. Our mission is to fashion a creative, independent platform for people like us and to foster a progressive, can-do community focused on human dignity and diversity. Women are central to this mission but all urban-dwellers who support women and who want to fight for human rights are welcome and encouraged. To encourage participation we intend to publish articles submitted by our readers. These articles will serve to promote their own work as authors, and can also serve to promote the work of a third person on which the article, interview or review is based.
How We Were Born:
Our Editor-in-Chief, Sofia Hericson, an inspired young film student, artist and feminist realized that all around her — amongst her friends, co-workers, and fellow artists — there were brilliant minds cultivating their own inspiring projects. Oh, to combine such talents, she thought! After a rather emboldening chat with a few of her friends Sofia decided to weave together their contributions and musings. She created We Geeked This blog, which worked as a platform to explore the groundbreaking ways in which women create through collaboration. Although great articles started coming her way, Sofia never felt like the blog was getting as much buzz as it deserved. So this year she decided to revive the project by making it into a magazine. By distributing the mag through London, and online for the rest of the world, Sofia hopes to open doors for all the amazing writers and artists who make up Geeked.
What Makes Us Different:
Geeked Magazine strives to dislodge negative preconceptions associated with the word feminist. To be a feminist doesn’t mean a hatred of men; it is not a static, universal ideology; indeed, to be a feminist one does not even need to be a woman. Thus, we work with women and men who support gender equality, and who are invested in the fight for a diverse, yet fair human community. Through our varied feminist perspectives, we explore subjects such as art, fashion, gender, music, architecture, travel and food.
What is This Kickstarter Project About:
Although we are all different in our approaches to feminism, and we work professionally in many different fields, we nevertheless share a passion for books and printed media. It is because of this passion that we have decided to move Geeked Magazine from the screen to the page. We have a desire to create something real, to bring life to the material in a way which inspires our readers every time they see our magazine on their coffee tables or their bookshelves. So far, Geeked Magazine is running solely on these dreams; none of our staff are paid and all start-up costs have been incurred by us personally. It is our belief in the mission of the magazine, and our passion for art and culture which has brought us this far, but the successful launch of our first print requires more. To make our launch a true success, we need you! This project is about spreading our dreams, opening up our community, and giving the first issue of our quarterly magazine a KICK START!
In the Launch Issue:
Among other reviews, interviews, and columns, our first issue will include:
- Interviews with Caitlin Moran, Sue Denim and Karrie Fransman
- An Autumn Fashion Spread
- An architectural essay on New York gardens
- Illustrated Flash Fiction
- A short graphic novel
