About this project
The idea of NeoDrop occured when I was upgrading my hi-fi speakers. I removed ferrofluid from tweeters and noticed unusual behavior of this liquid in magnetic field.I realized that I never actually seen a magnetic field, though I'm for sure studied a lot about it in University.
To see something invisible, isn’t it interesting? To show invisible to others is twice as interesting. NeoDrop was conceived as a Christmas gift for my friends. Their comments encouraged me to show this project to Kickstarter society.
The aim of this project is to raise funds to produce equipment that will help to begin mass production and send perfectly crafted ferrofluid displays for backers as a reward.
NeoDrop is an interactive ferrofluid display. Ferrofluid is located in a specially developed carrying liquid to ensure long and stable lifecycle of a product (not less than 5 years). Vessel is made of hardened glass that is very durable. Frame is made from hypoallergenic ABS Plastic.
Magnets that are used in NeoDrop aren't usual fridge magnet type.It is extremely powerful rare-earth magnets.
Samples that are shown in the video are cut manually from plastic sheet and also manually painted. Any imperfections are due to low-tech production process. Time needed to produce each piece in such way is enormous.
To automatize this process, I need to produce injection mold and make frames from plastic on the injection-machines. To cut cost, I need to order vessels and magnets in bulk.This is why I need your help.
I have an experience in mass production, injection molding and have manufacturing capabilities.
- First decade of April 2013 - ordering mold for plastic injection
- Second decade of April 2013 - ordering magnets and vessels
- May 2013 - assembling magnets and handles
- June 2013 - end of mold production and first samples
- July 2013 - final assembling of NeoDrop's and shipping to bakers
- August 2013 - everybody should receive all ordered NeoDrop's in a safe & durable package

- Is it safe?
NeoDrop is made from food-grade plastic and hardened glass. Ferrofluid in this vessel consists of 99% oil and 1% ferrite nanoparticles. If vessel breaks, it can get messy, but not poisonous. Carrying liquid is 99% distilled water and 1% proprietary non-toxic component. As I've mentioned, vessel is made from hardened glass and is very hard to break. However for safety, upon destruction vessels form hardened glass will divide into non-sharp pieces.

Risks and challenges
I already received commercial quotes on all components of NeoDrop, including cost and time production. The most complex component is the injection mold for plastic. I doubled the term of production to ensure that I'll not fail backers' expectations in terms of time and quality.
Technology itself is fairly easy for me and I have the experience in this field.
I do currently have a similar ferrofluid display and for the first month or so it was great, however, soon after the first month the ferrofluid seemed to deteriorate.
The main problems are: 1. carrying liquid shouldn't dissolve ferrofluid 2. ferrofluid shouldn't degrade over time. About first problem - the very first Neodrop was made about 6 month ago. And carrying liquid prooved that it is not react with ferrofluid. About second - I use quality ferrofluid with great amount of ferrite nanoparticles that is produced by german company that supplies this liquid to Audi (Audi uses ferrofluid inside their shock absorbers on top cars anf give guarantee on it during 5 years)
