UPDATE: Milli auf Deutsch! throw a stone to Mr. Kaw and get the app for the device (ios, android tablets) and language (english, german) of your choice!
Milli is a very small and very curious young snail who lives far, far away in a magical place called Apple-Tree Hill. Thanks to her endless curiosity and ingenuity - Milli finds a way to help all of the creatures she meets to be happy together, and be the best at being who they are.
“Milli – very little, big adventures on Apple Tree Hill” is a series of interactive stories and games for children from 3-6 years old for Android tablets & the iPad.
The first episode of the app and its technical infrastructure are completely self-funded and almost finished. We now need your support to finish that first app. We need to raise funds to have the music composed, finish the sound design and improve the animations in order to launch Milli's first story by July 2014.
On a perfectly normal, totally magical hill, stands a very special apple tree, full of confetti blossom, autumn leaves and rosy apples all at the same time. Beneath the apple tree lives a very small and very curious young snail called Milli. Milli is the only snail on Apple-Tree Hill, and when we first meet her, she is not sure what it means to be a snail. She is very slow, she knows that much. But Milli, as we have said, is also very curious. More than that, she is inquisitive, and it is her constant need to understand the world around her that fuels her adventures. For example, when Milli sees Harry the Stag Beetle's magnificent antlers, she doesn’t think: “Oh, that’s interesting.” She thinks: “I wonder what it would be like to have antlers like that?” And thus another adventure begins.
Apple-Tree Hill is a very small hill, but an enormous world at the same time. A microcosm of fantastic, beautiful, strange and familiar creatures, all of whom have something unique to share with Milli and her friends. Apple-Tree Hill is also an island, surrounded by a river that tastes of apple juice thanks to all of the apples which fall from the tree and roll down the hill into the water. One side of the hill is bathed in glorious sunshine and the other is constantly in shadow. It’s cold and dark on that shadowy north side and the creatures who live there are strange, slippery and a little bit scary - until you get to know them, that is.
Milli is a snail. She is very young, very brave, very curious and very, very slow – the perfect traits for an adventurous explorer. Milli loves nothing better than meeting the other animals on Apple-Tree Hill and helping them to solve their problems.
Every one of Milli’s adventures begins right in front of her beautiful blue-green shell. She only has to look around her to find another strange creature who inspires a crazy idea, or sparks a great quest. Of course, life is not always straightforward for a little snail in such a big world – there are plenty of scary creatures out there too. But, somehow, Milli always manages to see the best in everyone she meets.
Miro is a ladybird. “But I’m not a lady!” is his constant cry. Miro is Milli’s best friend, and sidekick on all of her adventures. Miro has one spot fewer on his left wing than on his right wing and his great quest in life is to find his missing spot. Milli of course, sets out to help him, but they get too easily distracted by yet another adventure.
Miro likes to hide inside Milli’s shell, and can often be found playing with all of the crazy things she collects and keeps in there. Miro is the kind of bug everyone wants to be friends with. He’s always there if you need him. He’s happy, cheerful and loves adventure just as much as Milli does. There’s not much Miro can’t do, when he sets his mind to it.
Wanda is the wise old owl who lives in a hole in the trunk of the apple tree. She is one of the oldest residents of Apple-Tree Hill and she knows a little something about everyone who lives there. Wanda loves reading from her great, big story book. She is our story teller and always has a tale of Milli’s adventures on Apple-Tree Hill (and beyond) to share with us.
Wanda, as we have said, is both very wise and very old. She makes it her job to know all there is to know about everyone. She has several pairs of glasses which help her to see everything that goes on on Apple-Tree Hill. She is very kind and a little grandmotherly. Wanda is constantly being interrupted by Nutty Ella, the very silly Squirrel who lives in the branches of the apple tree behind Wanda’s home. Nutty Ella never quite understands what is going on, but she always has something to say, regardless.
One interactive story lasts around 15-20 minutes in real time and includes:
- 30 fullscreen pages all pages are fully interactive (tilt the device to move the clouds, blow on the microphone to let a dandelion fly, etc.)
- three mini-games (can be played as part of the story, or on their own to promote independent learning)
- story written in rhyme story narrated by professional voice actor (with the option to turn off the narration and read the story to your child yourself)
- a wonderful soundtrack
Milli is a pure indie production. We have received funding in the form of a soft-loan (65% of our expenses so far) from The State of Germany and we have self-funded the remaining 35% of the production (development, artwork, writing). We are happy to do so, because Milli is a story we've wanted to make for over two years and it is very close to all of our hearts.
We want Milli to be the best interactive storybook it can possibly be, and that's where your support will be incredibly valuable to pay for great music and sound design, professional voice actors and animations for the first episode of the app. We want to give Milli the best start in the world.
How we will spend the kickstarter funds:
£6.000 » music, sounds & sound design
£2.000 » professional voiceover actors
£1.000 » sound studio
£2.500 » animations
£1.100 » programming, debugging
£1.400 » kickstarter & amazon fees

Risks and challenges
As the app is already mostly finished, we are in the fortunate position that we have already experienced and mitigated most of the risks. We are hoping that successful funding of the project will be for the polish – an original soundtrack, improved animation and a final sound design to make it the most enjoyable interactive experience possible for the age group.
As with all app design, there are certain technical risks in terms of operating system updates and device changes which need to be incorporated into the build process, but these have been factored into the final stages of the build process.
We are working hard on user testing, technical testing and stability testing throughout this process, and thanks to a very dynamic and intelligent technical lead, we are able to be agile with any new challenges the app faces.
