It can also open your garage door automatically when you arrive home and close it when you leave — using GPS technology. Open-Me even allows you to view the door in real time with its video feature (available in our premium version) and can send out an alert when your garage door is left open, giving you peace of mind. The easy-to-use app will be available on Apple IOS and Android smart phones through native apps…as well as any other devices with a web browser.
Open-Me Works. I’ve Been Using It!
I built my Open-Me prototype eighteen months ago and it has been working flawlessly ever since. It is ridiculously simple to set-up and I think you’ll really be surprised by how this app actually makes life easier. Here is a brief (albeit a tad rough) video that actually shows my initial prototype working at home.
In the video above you have seen our v1 prototype running in my garage. Below you will find pictures of my v2 prototype, which is the current set of hardware I’m working with. The v2 prototype is much different and makes huge strides in the direction of being production ready. In v2 we move away from a separate USB controlled relay board to a directly controlled relay chip. V2 is still utilizing commercially available products and requires me to re-write a bunch of the software. I am in the process of working with a local company to produce the v3 consumer prototype. The v3 prototype will be a custom built board that incorporates the chipsets from each item in v2 within a single form factor allowing me to continue using the re-written code.
This project has a lot of moving parts namely: the hardware prototypes, custom software for the prototype, an Android App, iOS App, and Web Portal. Each of these items except for the iOS App are currently working, however, each item is still not consumer ready. I’m looking forward to providing more details, pictures, and videos of my progress as we work through the development and production process. Come be apart of something and help build this with me!
I have to say, I love the automatic open and close GPS capability because it’s super convenient and extremely cool. My wife really likes being able to know if our garage door is opened or closed — says it gives her peace of mind. I think some people will see the ability to open and close the door from anywhere as the most valuable aspect. Actually, they’re all pretty fantastic features. Okay, so here’s a re-cap.
1) We can open and close our garage door using our mobile phones — from anywhere in the world.
2) My wife and I can check to determine if our garage door is open or closed from our smart phones — and we can even see it with our own eyes using the handy video capability. The alert feature will also send a text if one of us accidentally leave the door open.
3) I’ve set my garage door to open automatically when I arrive home, and close the door automatically whenever I leave. I have the GPS radius for opening and closing my door at 75 feet, but you can easily specify whatever range you want. So easy! So convenient! I’ve even surprised myself. I use this app every single day.
Wondering how it might impact your life. Just check out the use cases below:
Open To The Possibilities
Problem: Ever had one of your children locked out of the house — after school or while you’re out?
Solution: If they have a smart phone, iPod touch, or laptop they can open the garage door themselves with the Open-Me app. If not, they can call you from a friend or neighbor’s phone and have you open the garage door for them with Open-Me.
Someone Forgot to Close the Door… Again
Problem: Have you ever come home to find your garage door has been left open all day? Have you then checked around to see if everything was still there? Maybe even wondered if someone might have gone into your house?
Solution: You can easily set Open-Me to send a text alert when your garage door is open. Or, you can check your app any time to see if the garage door is opened or closed.
The Cable Guy
Problem: So…the cable guy, or the phone company or the service repairperson says they’ll be by between, say 10:00AM and Noon? How do you let them in if no one’s around? Do you work from home, come home from work for two hours and wait, leave a key under the mat? No great choices there.
Solution: The service person calls or texts you at work when they arrive and you simply open the garage door for them with Open-Me. You can also ask them to exit the same way and close the garage door behind them using Open-Me.
The Cat Sitter
Problem: Every Friday you like to head to your cottage up North. Unfortunately, Fluffy doesn’t share your enthusiasm for the great outdoors. So, you found the perfect person to stop in and feed kitty every Saturday afternoon, but you’d rather not give them a key to your place.
Solution: You can set Open-Me to grant access to the cat sitter every week at a particular time…or even 24/7, if you prefer. (It’s the perfect solution for renters too -- or anyone who needs regular access.)
Problem: You love that Harley and ride it every chance you get. Unfortunately, each time you pull out of the garage, you have to stop and fish around for the opener in the storage compartment of your bike. Not the most practical solution — and hardly a smooth exit. And it’s the same problem in reverse each time you return.
Solution: How cool would it be to have your garage door open automatically as soon as you enter your neighborhood — and close whenever you leave? All without having to even think about it. Answer: very!
The Folks Next Door
Problem: So your neighbor (or maybe your best friend) calls your cell on a Saturday and really needs to borrow your hedge trimmer. You’re at the big game two hours away and won’t be returning until late.
Solution: Within seconds, you open your garage for your neighbor and he’s all set – and pretty impressed. And the next time you need a favor, you’ll know who to call.
The Story Behind Open-Me
My name is Justin, I race motorcycles, and as you might guess, I’m also a self-confessed techno geek. As I mentioned earlier, opening garage doors when you’re driving a motorcycle is a pain, so I was determined to find a better way. How to begin? Well, I had an idea in mind that I though just might work. I purchased four commercially available circuit boards, soldered them together, and then wrote an embedded app, mobile app, and web portal. Okay, it was a bit more involved than that, but by the time I was finished I had developed the working prototype I’m still using today.I considered bringing the product to market by myself without any help, but feared it would max out my time and money. I pursued the TV Series Shark Tank for a time and the producers showed a high level of interest — but in the end, they decided against it. Since my days are spent at a technology company that’s loaded with talent, I ultimately decided to team up with them and bring the product to market via Kickstarter.
I’ve since joined forces with a few of the best minds from work to make my entrepreneurial dream a reality — and make Open-Me the best that it can be. The rest of our Open-Me team is:
Brian Scaturro - Developer / Consultant
Brian studied computer science in a variety of settings. It began as an independent passion that led him to the beautiful north where he studied it at Michigan Technological University. He has worked in Houghton, Traverse City, Grandville, and Grand Rapids, and has had his fair share of work as an independent contractor and consultant.
Some highlights of Brian’s development career are:
• Sentiment analysis applications developed using Scala
• Trading applications build using Scala and Neo4J
• A Node.js application for controlling aircraft interior
• A test parallelization tool for functional testing in PHP
Brian is an application developer at OST involved in writing quality software and transferring knowledge to clients. Away from work, Brian enjoys spending time with his family, programming, reading, and sipping on a good brew and a warm pipe.
Michael Lomonaco - Marketing
Michael honed his PR, marketing and advocacy skills while attending Michigan State University; however it all really started at young age as he worked the food booths at the annual Italian Festival in downtown Grand Rapids. From there, his career took a few twists and turns with gigs in local, state and federal political and legislative work to corporate and nonprofit public relations and communications and even leading communications & customer relations for a global manufacturer. These days, Michael gets his kicks leading the marketing department for OST. From demand / lead gen, advertising, public relations, marketing and communications and events to community relations, the marketing team serves the organization in many different ways. All of these experiences have introduced Michael to new people, fresh ideas and global concepts that have helped shape him into the person he is today.
Michael is not really limited to his work in marketing though; he can also be found working with any number of the community groups he serves – Friends of Grand Rapids Parks, the Down Syndrome Association of West MI Foundation, Van Andel Institute J-Board, Mercy Health Saint Mary’s Foundation and the Grand Rapids West Side ASP & CID Steering Committees. In addition, he advises and volunteers for a handful of local, state and federal political campaigns in Michigan. In 2013, Michael was selected as one of the Grand Rapids Business Journal’s 2013 “40 Under Forty” business and community leaders.

I hope you enjoy the app as much as I have.
How Does Open-Me Work?
The Open-Me free mobile app will be available for download on iTunes and Google Play. It will support both Apple and Android phones, as well as any other device with a web browser. There are three simple steps to get Open-Me up and running: (1) attach the Open-Me appliance to your garage door opener (easy Velcro and two wire attachment), (2) Follow the simple instructions to configure your app with your home wireless network, and (3) Set the GPS location and range to enable your garage door to automatically open and close.
Video capabilities are included in our premium version—requiring only a cable plug-in into the main Open-Me device. The camera can then be mounted wherever you like, with longer cords available for purchase if needed.
1. ATTACH The Open-Me appliance easily attaches to any garage door opener in minutes using the Velcro provided and attaching two wires to your opener. Attaching this is seriously easy. We promise you can take of it in the length of a commercial break.
2. CONFIGURE You will need wireless Internet in your home for the Open-Me app to work. The app is simple to configure and will take just a few minutes.
3. WOW! Configuring Open-Me to open your garage door automatically is easy…just stand in front of your garage door and click on “Set Location” – the automatic opener is now operational. Once the location is set, you can easily change the range if you would like — the default distance is set at 75 feet. That means that your garage door will automatically open whenever you’re within 75 feet of your garage…and close whenever you are outside this distance, provided you choose to enable this feature.
The Open-Me appliance utilizes the ARM1176JZF-S chipset which provides the system with an intelligent framework. The Arm chipset is coupled with a SSD memory module for persistent firmware storage and a wireless 802.11AGB chipset for IPV4 communication with the host network. The system also utilizes an onboard 12v relay to provide a signal to the garage-door overhead unit. This relay simulates a wired button to actuate the garage door opener. The state of the garage door it detected using active sonar to measure the door’s open position. The system hosts its own custom API allowing our mobile app to configure the device upon its initial power-up. The configuration is saved to the SSD memory module which provides protection in case of power failure. The system is in continual communication with our service to provide real-time status to the end user’s mobile device without the need for port forwarding or other complicated routing. Every facet of the systems communication including communication between the installed hardware, our cloud hosted service, and the mobile app is protected with AES-256bit encryption.
How Secure is Open-Me?
Security is a very big deal for me. Open-Me utilizes the same secure communications technology that’s used for online banking. The technology secures all transmissions to and from your mobile device as well as to and from the unit attached to your garage door. The algorithms used to secure these communications are the same algorithms described by the Department of Defense (DOD) as capable of securing “Top Secret” documents. I think that pretty much says it all.
Where are we today?
One of our first steps was to meet with a patent attorney to insure that weren’t violating any existing patents. Our attorney has performed a patent search, read through any related patents, and formally concluded that we are not violating any patents.
As mentioned earlier, the Open-Me Android App is working flawlessly with my prototype appliance. We will be adding additional functionality to this version along with user experience testing to insure it delivers beyond expectations. The Apple IOS App will be developed in tandem with the Android App — and will be virtually identical in appearance and functionality.
We have also begun the development of a hosted portal that will allow users to access the application from their desktop if their mobile Android or Apple mobile device is not readily available. For example, if the battery is dead on your smart phone, you can open your garage door from your desktop computer connected to the internet.
The prototype enclosure for the appliance is completed as depicted in the picture below. We have formal quotes from a U.S. based company to engineer the design for the Open-Me circuit board; this is the same company that produced the prototype enclosure. The lead time for designing the circuit board and having it production ready is only about six weeks. Our U.S. partner is anxious to get started — and we’ll give them a green light to begin as soon as we’ve met our minimum Kickstarter pledge amount.
For those of you who really like details, here are our objectives and goals for completion if our Kickstarter campaign is successful:
Initially, Open-Me will be able to support up to 6,000 orders in year From there, we will look to grow incrementally, with a 30% annual growth as our minimum goal.
Add functionality to the Android App to support multiple doors – by 3/15/14
Develop an application for IOS (Apple) similar to the application that Justin has already developed for the Android – 4/1/14
Complete the portal development that Justin has already begun with Justin directing the development. We will use a UX resource to assist with the look and feel of the application and the user experience – 2/15/14
Circuit board design, mechanical engineering of enclosure, and any other engineering costs associated with launching the product - Ongoing
Develop installation instructions for the Open-Me hardware that will be attached to the garage door opener – 5/1/14
Institute a support desk for installation and technical issues for Open-ME end users. Depending on the demand for the product, this would likely be a full time peson for one year to begin with – 6/1/14
We will address the ordering process either by developing an internal system or outsourcing the order processing (as of now – Byrne has agreed to direct ship the hardware to the end user) - Completed
Evaluate the need and most cost effective way to market Open-Me to Kickstarter buyers - Ongoing
Evaluate and purchase the appropriate level of liability insurance - TBD
Evaluate the best way to host the Open-Me portal (cloud, US Signal. OST, etc.) - Ongoing
Testing and Support
Open-Me is all about you. It’s absolutely essential to me that we’re able to deliver a product that has been thoroughly tested and has solid online and phone support during and after installation.
In my opinion, there’s no better way to test Open-Me than to have friends and family use it on a daily basis — just like I have been doing for these past eighteen months. While the production appliances are being designed and built, my mom, my neighbor, one of the guys from my gym and at least seven other volunteers will begin this first round of testing by using prototype appliances along with the existing Android app. They’re not pretty (yet!), but they definitely do the job!
Once the new manufactured versions of Open-Me are available (about two months down the road), we will roll out the second phase of testing. Fresh off the assembly line, these appliances will go to 20 or so Kickstarter friends anxious to give Open-Mea try — 10 Android and 10 Apple IOS users.
In an effort to ensure the best possible experience with Open-Me, we are developing a plan for call-in and on-line support for the life of the product. (And that will be a long, long time!)
What Will Your Pledge be Used for?
Your pledge will be used for the following tasks and expenses:
1. Establish Open-Me, LLC (Limited Liability Corporation.)
2. Add functionality to the Android App including multiple door support.
3. Develop an app for Apple IOS similar to the application that Justin has already developed for the Android.
4. Complete the portal development that I have already begun.
5. Work with a UX (User Experience) firm to enhance the look, feel, and usability of the applications.
6. Work with a US engineering firm to design the circuit board for the appliance.
7. Work with the same engineering firm to design the enclosure for the appliance.
8. Develop installation instructions for the Open-Me appliance.
9. Institute a support desk for installation and technical issues for Open-ME end users. Depending on the demand for the product, this will likely be a full time intern for one year to begin with.
10.Address the ordering process either by developing an internal system or outsourcing the order processing.
11.Purchase the appropriate level of liability insurance.
12.Evaluate the best way to host the Open-Me portal and purchase the service.
Ps: We have also successfully acquired the Open-Me.com web address. Good news!

Supply Chain Management
Reliable supply chain management is critical to the success of just about any operation—including Open-Me. The circuit board in our product is sourced from multiple locations outside the U.S. We are assembling it locally, however, through a contract agreement with a global manufacturer here in West Michigan. With your support, we’re confident we can build a world-class network of suppliers and make Open-Me a reality. And a great success!
The challenges are out there—and delivering a product that’s reliable and easy to use can be hard work. So, I assembled a dynamite team of some of the best developers around. All of us have learned a lot from the initial prototypes, and we’re putting every effort into making Open-Me a foolproof device that you'll use—and love—every day.
This is always such a tough one to anticipate. It could really go either way—from both a funding and orders standpoint. As with any start-up, we’re relying heavily on funding via our Kickstarter campaign. If things don’t go well here, we’ll work to secure alternative funding. If demand is much higher than expected, then we’ll make adjustments within our supply chain to ramp up production accordingly.
Currently the plan is to use a gimbal type mount to give the ability for yaw, pitch, and roll. Furthermore the camera will connect with a cord of some sort to the base unit. By separating the camera from the main board I believe that users will have more options for mounting.
Will the unit work with more than one authorized phone? In other words, can you configure it so that it would open the garage door automatically if either my wife or I were driving alone (obviously we have separate phones)?
Yes the unit will work with as many users as the owner allows. Furthermore each user may use as many devices as they wish.
Yes, You most certainly can take it with you. It's as simple to move as it is to setup.
There are several garage door opener apps available in the marketplace – why should I pay $99 (ED NOTE: FINAL PRICE DECISION?) for Open-Me?
No other app provides all of the functionality that we describe. The design and versatility are superior to anything else out there. Only Open-Me can do what we do.
