Social deduction fans and haters are enjoying Human Punishment alike; Social deduction haters prefer it because lying isn’t required (often a game breaker if you’re not a good liar…) and advanced social deduction players find enough depth and complexity to love it as well. It is also the perfect gateway game for the genre.
Human Punishment is a social deduction game for 4-16 players, where players belong to one of five factions. Each faction has its own special victory condition, as well as unique hidden roles (ID cards) and abilities.
The remnants of Humanity are hiding inside an abandoned factory, struggling to survive. Humans have support abilities to help their team.
The vengeful Machines started the rebellion with the Human Punishment virus. Machines have aggressive abilities to destroy their enemies without mercy.
The anarchic Outlaws try to resist the Machine revolution whilst attempting to conquer the world. Outlaws have selfish abilities just for their own kind.
No one knows the source of their existence, but the mysterious Legion is a living swarm. Legion absorb living beings and manipulate them to become Legion too.
Deathbringer collects everything from the trash yard and sometimes he reanimates the destroyed bodies. The undead Fallen could be a big threat!
Each player receives 1 ID and 2 loyalty cards. Your ID gives you a special ability and a team assignment, while your loyalty cards each contain one more team assignment. If the majority of your cards are one color, you’re on that team! If you have no majority, you’re automatically an Outlaw, a lawless renegade that simply wants to be the last man standing!
This means that most roles have the potential to be on any team. What happens when the robotic Assassin starts to empathize with those she’s been programmed to destroy? Or when Lifesaver’s medical prowess is in the hands of a player that wants to be the last man standing?
However, some roles are always loyal to their team. Nothing can persuade characters like the evil Virus or the human Agent to abandon their factions.
Find your team, trust no one.
At the beginning of the game, everyone’s loyalties and ID cards are unrevealed, secret to all other players. On your turn, you can secretly investigate one loyalty card belonging to another player, taking a peek for yourself. If all loyalty cards from one player are already revealed, you can finally investigate their ID card.
Instead of investigating, you might instead want to draw a Program, powerful cards that can do all sorts of things like attack other players or alter the flow of the game. These cards can be one-time-use, have persistent effects that stay with you in future turns, or even secretly influence your loyalties without even playing it!
Think you’ve got the other players figured out. Grab a weapon and aim it at someone! Choose your weapon carefully: do you want a rifle, a heavy hitter that can kill in one hit unless your opponent reveals his ID to everyone? Watch out though: the abilities on ID cards activate when revealed, so don’t point a rifle at someone unless you’re prepared for some retaliation!
Perhaps you’d prefer the pistol, which lets you draw a powerful program, but leaves your opponent merely wounded unless they reveal a loyalty card?
Later in the game, you might be able to unlock even more powerful weapons, like the Rocket launcher, capable of killing multiple players at once, or the Laser, a long-range rifle that can fire without declaring your target.
Machines will often ignore Outlaws, opting to target Humans instead, while Humanity will often make a makeshift alliance with Outlaws to ensure the Machines’ downfall. But watch out! The Outlaws know they’re dead next, so they’ll be looking for the perfect opportunity to stab the Humans in the back.
No night time phase at the beginning of the game? Player elimination? WTF? Don't panic!
Have you been eliminated? Death might not be permanent in this game! Some players might be able to bring you back from the dead. In fact, with the right Programs, you might be able to reanimate yourself! To make things even better, your brief time in the realm of the dead has given you otherworldly knowledge of your player’s motives. How is that possible? With the new night-time phase!
Whenever a player is eliminated, that player reveals all their ID and loyalty cards, then instructs everyone else to close their eyes, sticking a thumb up when the player calls out their faction. This is used to check if a team has won the game, but if the game continues and that player is resurrected, they can use that knowledge to their benefit!
In PROJECT: HELL GATE we will serve you lots of new cards. Of course, we will evolve the ID pool. 9 new ID cards for all the main factions will bring much more variety and every role comes with a unique artwork and a unique special ability.
17 new programs will also join the program pile, and there are some neat features like the Black Market and Dark Net, which will bring a new auction to the table, with high prices and even higher profit. Also we integrate a new method to bring Legion into an active game without their leader ‘Mindeater’ involved!
A dangerous weapon will be locked from the beginning of the game. If you get the chance to grab the HELL GATE, you will become a threat to all your enemies.
In this expansion, we want to bring further story and atmosphere, so we have scenario setups for 4-8 player counts! Every scenario will use specific IDs and will also include a unique rule, so that every setup will feel different. 10 setups are ready for launch, and here you can see one of them:
The Hell Gate is extremely hard to master. Humans activated some ancient weapon, and really messed up- they unleashed some powerful and evil beings from the other side! 3 Automa Boss fights will enter Human Punishment, and they can spawn in the middle of a game! Every Boss works completely different and bring their individual rules into play. Kingdom Death: Monster inspired us a lot and we hope you will enjoy all fights against these evil creatures... oh and by the way: they can win the game on their own!
7 portal programs will be shuffled into the programs pile and if you draw the correct amount (4-6 players: 3 portals, 7-9 players: 4 portals, 10-16 players: 5 portals), an EX Automata Boss will enter the fight. We will reveal more details in the following days, but here you can see the first Boss: Exitus
We received lots of feedback from our great community, and this is our reason to bring you advanced rules! PROJECT: HELL GATE will have the complete rules from the core game and the expansion and also lots of new detailed information (we have added the most asked questions from the BGG FAQ) to solve possible questions. We will even bring you new rule variants (no team swapping option, no blocked hand size etc.)
We found some minor mistakes on a handful of cards, so we decided to reprint all these cards in the PROJECT: HELL GATE expansion. You can easy change your wrong cards.
To reduce the price from the expansion as much as possible, we separated these quality upgrades. Everything in HP Power-up is not needed to play the core game or the expansion, but you could upgrade your game experience with these beautiful individual tokens, the XL 'Hell Gate' weapon and the XL EX Automa board. It is the perfect way to bring even more strange beauty to the table and more overview.

You and your friends can play a free online version on Tabletop Simulator (English or German). This works for 4-7 players (we recommend a communication device like Skype, TeamSpeak etc. because every social game needs communication!)

Risks and challenges
The components of Human Punishment are fairly easy to produce, which means it has a lower level of risk than other games, especially those with a lot of miniatures.
Despite that, outside of making sure the game is properly prepared and choosing my partners wisely (printing, logistics, etc.), it may happen that we face delays from uncontrollable sources. It may result in some delay in the delivery date, but if that were to happen, rest assured that I would keep your informed about the situation, every step of the way.
