The 2014 List
At every $2000 benchmark, we're going to announce a new book. The images below certainly aren't the actual jackets, and even the titles are subject to change. The books are still on the distant horizon, but keep on pledging so we can turn over more.
New Rewards added!
We just added the last round of artwork: paintings from Edward Mullany (see his work at The Other Notebook). There is also a BALLS! package, including softballs, tennis balls, ping pong balls. And because Publishing Genius puts out more than just books, we wanted to highlight our chapbook series—so now you can get a copy of Joseph Riippi's latest, Puyallup (coming this winter), PLUS Joe will send you a postcard from the titular Washington town.
What's Being Said About Publishing Genius Press
My overall mantra is, “What would Adam Robinson do?” I try to channel him a lot. If you’re looking for a model of how to run a small press, he is a good spirit animal. —ROXANE GAY, at HTMLGiant
Publishing Genius is my favorite press in the whole universe because Publishing Genius is a door. It opened up a neon new world to me. I met my girlfriend in this world. If you read Publishing Genius books you will find true love. I own or have read 22 Publishing Genius books. Each one is fantastic, surprising, and different from every other Publishing Genius book. —JACKSON NIEUWLAND, poet, reader
Anyone in the publishing industry not paying attention to Adam Robinson and Publishing Genius isn't paying attention. With each new book, it's like hearing a voice from the clouds saying, "Here you go. Books definitely still matter, especially this one." They are not only finding the best new authors, but a whole new model. —MICHAEL FITZGERALD, founder of Submittable & author of Radiant Days (Counterpoint)
Adam Robinson has turned Publishing Genius into its own special frame-of-mind. The writers he works with and the books he publishes are fantastically fresh. They point to a bright future, when books become heroic again and discovery is still important. —KEVIN SAMPSELL, publisher, Future Tense Books and author of This Is Between Us (Tin House)
Publishing Genius is awesome. Adam's got great taste in design, knows how to run a business, but most importantly: he finds brilliant writers, and produces their work beautifully. —KEN BAUMANN, publisher, Sator Books and author of Solip (Tyrant Books)
Where PGP Has Been
Since 2006, Publishing Genius has worked with dozens of writers and has released 30 award-winning books of fiction and poetry from some of the most innovative writers working today. PGP authors have been lauded in Publishers Weekly, VICE, NYLON, Poets & Writers, The Huffington Post, The Believer, Variety, and dozens of other culture magazines. PGP also hosts an online magazine that has published over 1,000 writers since 2009 and offers a new piece every weekday.
Running this press has been a privilege and worthy challenge, as well as a mind-opening experience. PGP authors, designers, editors and friends are humbled by the praise and support, and just by the fact that so many people are interested in buying our books. Each year we're increasingly amazed by the genius of contemporary literature, and we're inspired by the readers who give value to the work.
Where PGP Is Going
Now we are launching "Publishing Genius 2.0" because as attention grows for our books and the small press culture in general, it's an ideal time to increase print runs, production values and distribution, and thereby readership.
To be specific, this "Publishing Genius 2.0" project is to Kickstart our 2014 catalog of books. We will release five books (which we're excited to announce [sneakily] as the campaign continues) (as well as some cool stretch goals), and we want to put more money toward 1) larger print runs and new printing styles, 2) better sales channels on our website, and 3) advertising and publicity.
We'll be revealing the books in a series of updates as the project continues. The first book will be revealed once we hit $2000, and then every subsequent two grand.
It's important to note that these books will be published regardless of this campaign. But the degree of attention the authors absolutely deserve is only possible with your help. With these funds, we'll be able to capitalize on all the experience and support we've gained in our seven years, and combine it with the funds necessary to achieve these goals. Even though this money will be used specifically for the projects slated in 2014, it is our expectation that the new levels of success will be sustained throughout the long future of Publishing Genius.
If you want to participate in a new beginning for a savant avant press, please consider donating. Also check out the awesome rewards we're offering: books from PGP, original artwork from popular writers, an editorial session, and other unique items.
Risks and challenges
Some potential challenges are delays in the editorial stage, finding the right book design, then getting the files to work with the printer. We've dealt with these issues (and more) in the past and have a good track record. We've already established almost everything that's needed to succeed and we're excited to have more financial latitude to help in the future.
Working with publicists and advertising salespeople is new to us, but PGP is networked with other generous publishers who have already agreed to help with any questions we have in this new process.
As long as we reach our base goal of $10,000, we'll be able to make significant strides in our 2014 catalog.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
