A "big jewel" and a "little jewel" (and Ophelia, the cat)

My project is to explore the creation of very small wooden bowls from some of the most attractive and unique woods available to me.

I have been making and selling wooden bowls for 13 years. I have made over 11,000 signed and numbered wooden bowls ranging in size from 7 to 24 inches in diameter.  In 2001, the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian had a 6 month exhibition on the History and the Art of Woodturning.  After a nationwide search they chose to purchase my work to offer for purchase during the show.  In 2002 and 2003, I won Best in Show for the 2 consecutive years in  the regional fund raising show put on by the Harrisburg National Public Broadcasting Stations.  They commissioned me to make 50 bark edged bowls from one tree to be sold to raise funds.  They filmed the entire process from tree to finish bowls to air on their station while the bids were being taken.

After experimenting for several months I have I chosen 7 woods that I really like for this project.  I will make no more than 150 bowls for this set  and I am calling it "The Little Jewels” Limited Edition #1.  They will be offered to my backers as individual bowls or as a set and will include a certificate of authenticity. Backers would receive their bowl or set numbered in order of their subscription date. The funds raised will provide me with the time and the wood I need to complete this project.

These are the 7 bowls I will be making for the "Little Jewels" project.

Level 1 is a spalted maple bowl. The lines appear as the wood begins to decompose. They may have some surface pecks as the hardness of the wood varies within the bowl.

I get my big leaf maple burl from Oregon as it is mostly a west coast tree.  It is a highly figured burl and displays well in the natural edge bowl.

Level 3 is a butternut natural edge bowl

Butternut is also known as "White Walnut"  and is common in the northeast.  It has wonderful "toothy" bark.

Level 4 is a natural edge box elder burl.
Level 4 is a natural edge box elder burl.

Box elder is a favorite turners wood when it has the red figuring which is caused by the box elder beetle.  It is sensitive to bright light and should be displayed accordingly.

Level 5 is a bowl from manzanita burl.
Level 5 is a bowl from manzanita burl.

Manzanita is one of my favorite burls and is found on the west coast from Oregon down through California.  The burl is at the base of the tree under the ground with the roots coming out of it.  Very hard, heavy and tricky to turn, I know of no other burl like it.  It takes a glass like finish.

Level 6 is a "first growth" redwood
Level 6 is a "first growth" redwood

I have only been turning this wood for a year or so.  It comes from the roots and stumps of the first growth redwood trees that were cut 100 years ago.  This wood is from a tree that could have be well over 1000 years old.

Level 7 is a set that includes the 6 bowls from levels 1-6 plus a rosewood hollow vase.

Rosewood hollow vase included in the level 7 and 8 sets.

Level 8 will include the all the pieces in level 7 plus 3 additional bowls which were made as prototypes.  These are unique pieces where the bowl is of a style or wood orientation that would not be available for a set.  They are not yet completed and so will be a surprise.

Risks and challenges

I don't anticipate any problems although an equipment or wood problem could cause a small delay.
