MelonDash is a fun spin on racing games. Instead of driving a car, the player rolls around a colorful watermelon. The melon can roll pretty fast, so the player must balance speed with caution. Roll the watermelon into a rock (or a pig), and SPLAT - your round racer pal turns into fleshy melon chunks. The player races against other watermelons, each with their unique personalities. There are several powerups scattered in each track. Some powerups (like TNT) are offensive - great for turning your foes to juicy smithereens. Other powerups are passive (like the Boost), allowing you to speed past other melons with style. MelonDash is a fast-paced yet goofy game, suitable for all ages.
Oscar - Dependable and well-rounded (pun intended). Oscar is a good choice for beginner players or those who like a no-frills guys who just rolls.
Gary - Take it easy, man! Gary is a laid-back kind of melon. He might not be nimble, but you can count on him for some good ol' speed - just watch out for those rocks!
Melonie - Good looks and fancy footwork! Melonie is a great choice for dodging all the stuff that can ruin your race time.
Spike - Take a ride on the wild side! This melon is bananas. Spike is a good choice for those who like to put the pedal to the metal.
Boost - Satisfy your need for speed! This powerup will give your melon a boost (wicked-looking flames included!)
Shield - Life is rough for a soft-shelled fruit. Power up the Shield to protect your seedy can.
Glue Jar - Some melons are faster than others. Tired of eating dust? Splat down some glue to even out the playing field.
TNT - Nothing says Good Morning like frikin' dynamite! Rattle some melon shells with this explosive package.
Carrot Missile - No aiming required! This explosive veggie seeks out any pesky melons in front of you, homing in on them with prejudice.
Gatling Seed Machine - Spittin' seeds at 1000 RPMs! This bad boy will cut through melons like a hot knife through butter!
SuperMelon - First backer-created content! Grab this powerup to turn your melon racer into a crime-fighting, laser-beam-shooting, cape-flapping SuperMelon!
The Farm - Chickens, pigs, scarecrows, tractors, and a big red barn. Melons will race through corn fields and barrel into feeding pigs. Enough fun for an afternoon in the hay!
The City - Suit up, melon boy! The city streets are a rough place for loose fruit. Watch out for pedestrians, pigeons, and parallel parking.
The Castle - Hearken back to ye olden times. Draw bridges, stone walls, and a moat! It's time to get medieval.
The Desert - A melon is 92% water, and the tumbleweeds are thirsty! Don't mess with the rattlesnake. Cowboys like to eat watermelon for lunch.
What Has Been Done
Extensive progress has been made to bring the game to a beta status. All of the internal aspects of the game are 90% done - the physics, controls, the racing dynamics, and rules. The first level - the Farm, is also 90% done. There are 4 watermelon characters and 6 powerups. The characters each have a unique animation. There are also animals in the Farm level, with their own animations.
What is Left To Do
I have planned 3 more levels, 2 more watermelons, and a 4-5 powerups. Depending on how many backers claim the limited rewards ($100, $500, $1000, $3000), there may be more levels, watermelons, and powerups.
The sound effects in the game need some work. Some effects are good-to-go, while others are "placeholders". The levels will each need their own background music.
How the Funds Will Be Used
All of the funds raised through Kickstarter will be used to purchase 3d models and textures needed to finish the game. These assets include more watermelons, powerups, levels, and props. I have hired an outside 3d graphics designer for this task, so the funds will be used to pay for his time to create these needed game assets. He's done a great job so far! Doesn't it look great!?
If the funds exceed the goal, the rest of the money will be used to buy sound effects and music. If there is still money left, I will put that towards creating more content for the game - bonus powerups, bonus watermelons, even a bonus level!
The game will be released for iOS and Android mobile devices, as well a web-based Flash version for PCs and Macs. Backers will also receive a limited-edition desktop PC/Mac version.
Risks and challenges
As with all indie game projects, a major challenge is actually finishing the game. I am ready to meet this challenge head-on. Having already invested much time and personal money into the project, I am committed to seeing it through.
Another challenge the project faces is App Store approval by Apple. I am equipped to handle this challenge because of my unwavering attention to detail and commitment to excellence.
