Shaping Sound is producing a new short film with world-renowned composer Ólafur Arnalds.
Shaping Sound is producing a new short film, and we want to collaborate with you! Through our Kickstarter page, you can contribute to our project, receive Shaping Sound apparel and other rewards, and we'll share the process with you every step of the way. Below is a description of the project, and how YOU can help Shaping Sound create a unique independent film!
ABOUT SHAPING SOUND ON FILM
The creators and dancers of Shaping Sound know what it’s like to dance specifically for film. With dancers from SYTYCD and Dancing With The Stars, and the company’s unique beginnings on Oxygen’s hit show All the Right Moves, Shaping Sound’s dancing has been intimately tied up in the screen. Now, fresh from an explosive first national tour, Travis Wall, Nick Lazzarini, Teddy Forance, and Kyle Robinson are returning to the screen to create their first independent film as a company. The film will feature choreography from Shaping Sound's Emmy-nominated choreographers, along with an innovative collaboration with world-renowned composer Ólafur Arnalds.
Shaping Sound On Film is taking dance out of the theater, exploring new staging and new ideas for dance on camera. For this project, we want to use the camera as another character, bringing you, the audience, into the center of the dance. In this medium we can try new techniques, explore site-specific choreographic opportunities, and grow creatively in a way that hasn’t been possible before.
We are thrilled to work on this project with Ólafur Arnalds, because his music both complements and inspires our creative process. The combination of organic orchestral sound and unique electronic rhythms creates a sound and approach that is ideal for our choreography. To hear examples of his music and see why we love his work, check out his website: http://olafurarnalds.com
Shaping Sound has had an incredible year – and that’s because of YOU, our fans. We are incredibly thankful for your support! We can’t make this dream happen alone – please donate and join us on this journey. Thank you!
HOW KICKSTARTER WORKS
You can pledge any amount and choose a reward. At the end of our Kickstarter campaign, if the combined total of all pledges for our project meets our $60,000 goal, then the credit cards of those who have pledged are charged and we receive the funds to pay our artists. If we don't meet our goal, then the money is not withdrawn from your account and no rewards are provided. If we exceed our $60,000 goal then the extra funds will be used to make this film.
GOALS WITH FUNDING
Creating films of the highest quality can get pretty expensive. We’re seeking to raise $60,000 to produce this film. Your donations will allow us to meet the obligations of a preliminary film budget with our producer CLI Films. The money we raise will go toward hiring the film crew and production team; paying the dancers, choreographers and composer; funding costumes, makeup, set and lighting design; securing rehearsal space and rental of the locations to shoot the film; and creating DVD’s and apparel items to distribute to Kickstarter supporters!
MORE WAYS YOU CAN HELP
Any contribution you can make will help us realize this dream. We want to continue to create, grow, and share our work with you. Your help means that we can take the next step on that journey. One of the most important ways you can help is to share this Kickstarter with your network. Keep checking back on this page as well as the Shaping Sound Facebook and Twitter for updates!
As a thank you for your contributions, we've put together some great Shaping Sound rewards for you! Below are some photos of our Shaping Sound apparel items, which aren't available anywhere else online. We're excited to offer some of these items to our fans for the first time!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
If we don’t reach our Kickstarter funding goal, there is a risk that we won’t be able to complete this project in 2014. We’ve set our goal at the lowest budget necessary to deliver a high quality film. Every contribution will be vital to us in completing this project. However, we have a great team of experienced filmmakers working on this project, and many of the risks inherent in filmmaking will be mitigated by our experience.
There is always a risk that this film won’t get completed as fast as we hope, which is why we have set the delivery date for the film next fall. That said, we will ship rewards early in 2014, followed by the film upon completion of shooting and post production.
If we reach our funding goal of $60,000, we are confident that we will be able to produce a great film! Thanks again for your contributions!
