About this project
WE REACHED OUR FIRST STRETCH GOAL!
In just 10 days we reached our first stretch goal of $30,000!
Our next stretch goal is two-fold:
1. YES--We want to reach $50,000 and get every backer an audio copy of The Courage Club.
2. AND YES--We want to reach 1,000 people. Have 1,000 people totally wrapped into this movement of Courageous Living in the face of it all.
I am SUPER excited about the Courageous Wellness Kit! Here is a little more info on that:
Hi. My name is Katie. The simple version of my story is this: when I was 30, I was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. Despite a year of nasty treatments, the cancer ended up spreading, and at 31, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. Since then, I’ve been on a wild ride trying to find a way to slow this cancer down and “get on with living my life”.
The real version of my story is a bit more intense. I was living the average life of a busy, Type A, overly committed 30-something when crisis and illness ravaged my body, stole my identity and damaged or destroyed almost everything that gave my life meaning including my career, my relationships and my shot at having a family.
After wrangling with tremendous grief, fear and anger I discovered that the only way to find meaning again would be through embracing whatever life I had left, and this would require traveling to new depths with myself.
I had a new goal. One bigger than "crushing cancer." And it was this: to get so present with life, so connected with my body, and so engaged with the world that even if I died, I would have lived a healed and powerful life.
The Birth of a Book
This is not a book about illness and dying. This is a book about deep wellness and powerful living.
I have written this because I want you to know that you are not alone in the messy work of making meaning in our lives and I want you to live your one, wild, beautiful life all in.
In The Courage Club, I give you true stories and tested resources to help with audacious, courageous, wholehearted living.
Cancer, crisis, or not, this book is meant to give a megaphone to the voice inside each of us that is saying: Now is the time to find happiness. Today is the day to start living.
I’m so grateful for any and all support you send my way in bringing this baby of love and encouragement into the world.
What does the book cover?
- MIND-EXPANSION: by discovering your inherent self-worth, practicing radical acceptance, allowing yourself to be vulnerable and living more mindfully.
- BODY-EMBRACING: by learning to nourish, not just feed, your body, discovering how to connect through joyful movement, and learning how to advocate powerfully for your health.
- WORLD-REVELING: by finding your cause and your service, getting outside and going beyond your comfort zone, and connecting with people and building deeper relationships.
Each chapter is told through my own personal experiences, struggles and triumphs and many chapters include my own practical practices for putting these ideas into action.
Who is this book for?
This is a book for anyone who wants to join in on crazy, courageous living. It’s particularly for other young adults who have been through cancer or an otherwise life-altering crisis.
Crisis can burn us out, break us down, traumatize us and leave us feeling deflated. But crisis also makes us more resilient, break us open and leave us ready for the kind of deep healing that courageous living can provide.
Whether your crisis is cancer, death, divorce, career-related, illness or existential, you will be able to relate to the universal challenges that many of us face when dealing with life-altering changes.
How The Courage Club supports the Young Adult Cancer Movement
The young adult cancer movement has been critical to me in rebuilding my life after my cancer diagnosis. The people I have met in that movement have inspired me and the organizations dedicated to this cause have changed my life. Because of this, I am donating* 10% of sales of this book to two of my favorite Young Adult Cancer organizations: First Descents, and Stupid Cancer. It is my sincere hope that this book will help other young adults with cancer and that the proceeds will go towards changing, even more, lives.
*In accordance with Kickstarter rules no funding from this Kickstarter will go directly towards any non-profit organization. The donation will come from book sales.
How far along is the book?
A full manuscript is complete and is currently undergoing edits by the wonderful editors at Difference Press. The eBook will be launched on Amazon on July 7th with the paperback version launching in the months to follow.
The Publishing Process
Finding the right publisher is super important and I am thrilled to be working with Difference Press. Difference Press specializes in supporting authors who are looking to build a movement with their message.
Difference Press is an “equi-publishing” company, which is half-way between traditional and self-publishing. With Difference Press, I get incredible expertise in developmental editing, copy editing, cover design, printing, and distribution and I get to maintain total creative control, the copyright over my work and 100% of the royalties. However, I am still responsible for some of my own costs.
My Kickstarter Goals
I am raising $20,000 to fund all aspects of the editing, publishing, printing, and distribution.
- Editing, Publishing and Printing: $13,000
- Outreach and Marketing: $3,000
- Distribution: $1,000
- Kickstarter and Bank Fees: $2,000
- Kickstarter Video: $500
- Unexpected: $500

Safe & Vital Kit
We all want the products we buy to keep our homes clean, keep us looking good and keep us healthy but it can feel impossible to do all the research required to know which products are safe. That’s why I'm here to help! I've done extensive research on the topic and created a two-part Safe & Vital Kit.
One part general, one part personal.
Part 1: I deliver you a guide of recommendations for the safest products in the following categories: sunscreen, laundry detergent, makeup, deodorant, dish soap, nail polish and more!
Part 2 (Optional): You let me know your most used personal care (make-up, shampoo, hairspray, deodorant, etc.) or cleaning products, and I deliver back an assessment of how safe each product is to you and your family, including a breakdown on its impact on allergies, cancer, and our hormones. I will also provide recommendations for safer alternatives if need be.
I am an experienced public speaker and have given speeches and facilitated discussions at a number of venues including fundraisers, conferences, and community gatherings. Here is the speech I gave at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Frederick.

Katie Campbell is a Stage 4 cancer thriver and award-winning, writer, speaker, and advocate for the young adult cancer movement. She has a passion for connecting with and advocating on behalf of fellow young adult cancer survivors and fighters.
Katie was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in the fall of 2013 at the age of 30. After a year of traditional treatments and a few months of remission, Katie’s cancer returned as Stage 4. Ever since Katie has been dedicated to living her life as much as possible, going on as many adventures as she can and speaking up about the challenges facing thirty-somethings with cancer.
Since her diagnosis, Katie has been crafting raw and honest accounts of her journey on her own blog. She has also shared her own journey as a speaker in a variety of venues including First Descents’ annual fundraiser, and the Association of Oncology Social Work conference.
In her professional life, she is a Food Rights Policy Manager for an international development non-profit called ActionAid USA. Her job has taken her to Africa many times, a continent that includes many of her favorite people and places. Katie lives in Frederick, Maryland with her cockapoo Lucy and her husband Andrew. She’s a sci-fi fantasy nerd, loves to rock climb, was once a part-time wedding photographer, has been dabbling in graphic design since she was 16, runs her own Etsy shop and is a vegan who secretly loves macaroni and cheese.
Risks and challenges
The eBook launch is scheduled for July 7th and my publisher and I are both 100% committed to that date so there should be no delays there.
There should not be but could always be delays in getting the print book complete and getting the books distributed as life and technical difficulties always happen.
While my current treatment regimen keeps me relatively healthy I am a person living with a chronic and life-threatening illness. There is a chance that should my health take a turn for the worse, I would not be able to deliver on all of these rewards. If that were the case I would do my very best to find an alternative solution or reward for you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
