About this project
Hi there, my name is Melinda Tracy Boyce and i'm an alternative cartoonist trying to fund the printing of my quarterly comic zine: The Melinderly.
I've been painting one-page diary comics for four years now and posting them on my website melindaboyce.com. I enjoy working on comics for my website, but lately i've been drawn to many longer stories that I'd like to try to display in a different format. I love the idea of subscription based comics (John Porcellino's "Kingcat" and Alec Longstreth's "Phase 7" are both amazing and utilize the comic subscription model)…you can either buy the issues individually or pay a discounted rate to pre-order a year's worth of issues.
I hand-paint each one of my comics in gouache and use colored pens for details, which has always been time-consuming, but I just love it. Color makes every story come to life in a way that I don't think black and white can convey (for my work). And therein lies the problem…because i'm unwilling to give up my color, self-printing my quarterly is extremely difficult for me to afford. As far as I know, no quarterly comic zine has EVER been in full color...and hopefully, here's where incredible people like you come in! Let's make history -- help me print "The Melinderly" and find one on your doorstep every three months!
I think that autobiographical comics can link people together in incredible ways. When you read my work I want you to think, laugh and reflect on your own experiences, but ultimately what I hope people find when they read my work is honesty. I try to be as truthful as possible when creating my comics. Yes, I will have stories about being 26 and young and drunk and in love, but I also want to explore longer stories that haunt me...my grandma died this year and I was very close to her. To fully accept and reflect on this event I want to share this experience through my comics, which will help me, yes, but I hope will help you too.
Each issue will be 36 pages in beautiful full color, filled with comics that will NOT be posted online.
Here are some more details on the pledge rewards:
$25 or higher you get a 2.5" x 3.5" cartoon portrait of you or whoever you want!
$75 or higher and you will receive copies of two of my previously printed comics..."AOA #1" is a collection of my old diary comics, most of which are not online anymore (full color/180 pgs). "Okay? Okay!" is a double comic I did with my boyfriend Aaron Whitaker. Each of us tell the story of the beginning of our relationship in our contrasting art styles (b&w/64 pgs).
$100 or higher and I will paint a 5" x 5" full color portrait of you or a loved one...It makes for a great facebook, tumblr or blog profile pic that really stands out!
$300 or higher and you will receive a 9"x12" full color comic written by YOU! Tell me the story of your engagement, your craziest weekend, or your average day and I will transform it into a piece of hangable art...a great wedding, anniversary or birthday gift for someone really special in your life.
$750 or higher. The big one. If you can donate this much, I will make you an original eight page comic about whatever you like! Write your story and get your own original minicomic you can treasure for the rest of your life (plus five copies for you or your friends/family).
