Spruitje makes futuristic designs with light and living ecosystems: Pickles, Big Brother, Floating Island and Green Dexter. Inspired by 70's design, science fiction movies but mainly nature. Because of my fascination with primeval plants like ferns and moss - that have withstood the test of time - and the years of experimentation, I know exactly which plants keep each other balanced within a self-sufficient biotope. Moss and condense are essential in the works and ensure that the humidity stays in check, so that the nature can do its thing. And that's exactly what it does. A plant could die, a mushroom could sprout or a caterpillar could crawl. The works of Spruitje are living organisms that each have their own unique surroundings.
The condense is part of the design. To be more precise, it actually enables the work to be self-sufficient. It works a little as rain does in nature, and will therefore differ in intensity. Sometimes you'll see more condense than other times. Ideally the humidity in the ecosystem should be above 40%. The moss, which forms the basis of the little world, works best with this percentage. After a few weeks you'll realise that the ecosystem is leading its own life. Plants can suddenly grow very quickly (or not at all), you'll discover a little mushroom, the moss will change colour... Don't worry if a plant dies, as this also happens in nature and is part of the cycle. The light in the design is purely aesthetic. It's a LED-light that doesn't give off a lot of warmth and therefore doesn't influence the ecosystem.

My name is Jonael van der Sloot, founder of the brand Spruitje (little sprout in Dutch). I chose the name because I love to experiment with the growth and life of plants and vegetables. My parents fed my fascination for plants and raw nature from a young age onwards. When I was six months old my parents emigrated to Argentina with our family. They started their own biodynamic farm, meaning that I learnt to look at the nature in a holistic manner when I was a little boy. At the age of nine we moved with the entire family, which by that time consisted of eight children, to Chile. Our house there was surrounded by 50 hectares of forest. When I came back to the Netherlands at the age of 12, I was bothered by the tiny neat gardens in the city. I was used to untamed and wild nature. Plants like ferns and moss that survived the primeval times, roots of different vegetables that do their own thing and self-sufficient ecosystems fascinated me more and more. I started experimenting with plants and I taught myself everything about permaculture. A hobby (literally) gone wild, because before I knew it, my whole house with filled with little projects. When my daughter was born I had to hand in some of the space. That's when the sustainable worlds were first created. "Let's see what happens when I combine these plants in a glass pot and light." I got good feedback en I started to get assignments for installations on walls in restaurants, and slowly but surely I started to sell my work. I have two daughters now, live in Amsterdam (still without a garden though) and I have an atelier in the 'testing station' of the old agricultural school in Aalsmeer. I guess it's obvious that I really feel at home there.
Crowdfunding is an alternative way to finance a project. Crowdfunding works without financial intermediation, so it provides a direct contact between investors and entrepreneurs. Kickstarter is a website that allows you to share a crowdfunding campaign online. In this way everyone can invest in my project. The idea is that many individuals invest an amount which together fulfils the project. This is in contrast to bank loans and large investors, where there is only one investor who brings in a large amount. These small investors are called ‘the crowd’. On Kickstarter the money invested does not go directly into the project, the entrepreneur only receives the money if (at least) 100% of the needed amount is achieved. If this 100% is not achieved, the investors get their money back.
How can you support me?
Just click the green “Back This Project” button. Next, select the reward you'd like to receive and your pledge amount will automatically populate. If you select a reward that involves shipping, you'll be prompted to include this additional amount in your pledge. If you don't want a certain reward, select "No thanks, I just want to help the project" and enter your desired pledge amount.
You will need to create an Kickstarter account for yourself if you don’t have one yet. After selecting "Continue," you'll move on to confirm your payment details. On Kickstarter you can use a debit or credit card associated with Visa, MasterCard, or American Express.
Lastly, click the “Pledge" button and you’ll be all set! You should receive a confirmation email within moments of completing your pledge. We'll send you an email when funding ends to let you know if your pledge went through.
What do I do if I have questions about a project?
Ask me! At the bottom of my project page there’s an “Ask a Question” button. This will send your question directly to me.
