Gates of Horizon is a new Space Conquest MMORPG, where strategic and management game elements merge together to create a new, unique experience.

Online Multiplayer - Play with your friends: build a Holding, gain power and conquer the space together. Or play against them, if you prefer, engaging in epic battles.

Sandbox Game - No predetermined story, no preset tracks to follow, no restrictions: freely find your way in the universe. There will be consequences for any action, but they will be good or bad only depending on what you want to achieve.

Strategy First - Be more than just a ship pilot: be the General behind them! Give orders to your fleet and choose between letting your agents bring them on at their best or directly manage your ships, following the operations in real time in a 3D environment.

Manage your Crew - Hire up to 20 Agents while you level up your Corporations and train each of them in a different way with more than 30 skills, with no predefined class or path to follow.

Factions and Reputation - Choose your friends and your enemies through your actions, and gain access to better ships, components and blueprints.

Holding Space Station - Holdings can build powerful Base Stations, helping a Faction to claim political control over a system.

Dynamic AI - Aliens will always keep expanding their control through systems, preventing players from accessing deep space systems for control and resources, if they don't fight back.

Ship Fitting - Plan the best fitting for your ship before going out for an operation: get the best components you can afford and bring your best agents on board to obtain the highest bonuses available.

Mining and Crafting - Almost every object in the game can be crafted, starting from raw materials mined from asteroids.

Wide Market - Discover trade routes between far systems, sell or buy items on any Base Station and keep an eye on your cargo stocks.

Rich Gameplay - We want to make the gameplay the core of the game and we are completely focused on it: the game must be FUN, not just some eye-candy show.

We are a small Indie and we’re trying to kickstart our way into the gaming world without big financing. Gates of Horizon is our main project, we deeply love it and we really want to see it finished soon.

Until now, we have been able to spend all of our work time on Gates of Horizon using our own small funds and we have used that time to design the game and complete the initial prototype. Without funds, we will soon need to divert most of our energy toward other projects to survive as a company, which would probably prevent us from finishing this game.

Money from every KS backer would allow us to focus 100% on Gates of Horizon, bring it to completion and do it within a reasonable amount of time. This is our dream and we really need your help to make it real!

 



We want our game to run everywhere. And we really mean it: our plan is "if there is a piece of metal and/or plastic somewhat connected to internet, we want our game to run on it."

Through the use of Unity3D, we are currently developing the official client for Windows, Mac OS, Linux, iOS and Android. We plan to expand to game consoles and the web as soon as we can and the technology allows it.

We are putting every effort related to the GUI and the User Experience to optimize them for mouse/keyboard pairs, for touchscreens and console pads.

Gates of Horizon is a MMORPG, an online game. You download the client and connect to our servers.

What we see is that almost every company around here seems to put a lot of effort to lock you out the client: they use all sorts of DRMs and they prevent you to hack it in any way, lest you cheat. Sometimes with poor results, by the way.

We took another approach: we tried our best to secure the protocol itself, to prevent cheating from the beginning. A (very simple) example: it is not the client that decides where your ship is, it just "asks" the server to move the ship in a direction and then the server tells the client where it has moved it. So, it's just not possible to cheat by hacking the client.

This relocates a lot of heavy lifting from the client to the server and we know it makes the work harder for us to scale out the servers load (and we are absolutely up for the challenge).

But this also allows us to start a little revolution: as soon as our client is ready and the code is clean, we will release it under an Open Source license and provide the entire client source and binary protocol documentation. Everyone will be able to download the free version of Unity3D and delve into the code, or even start a new app or client from scratch.

If this scares you: we also tried to design the game mechanics to prevent unfair advantages for anyone using automated clients or bots over players who prefer to get along without them, and we are committed to keep the game this way. In other words: bots will be welcome, they will be in fact part of the game, but don't expect them to make anyone stronger.

We want to build this game for our players, and we are committed to make it fun for them, not for us.

We will try to estabilish a strong communication channel with the player community, let everyone propose and vote new ideas, heavily influencing the actual development of the game.

All Kickstarter backers, as our "older" players and the ones that helped us making this dream come true from the beginning (and, in fact, even before), will have a sort of priority channel.

We have already done some preliminary work on the game, to understand what we can and what we can’t manage to do. In this very moment, the game is already running on most platforms in a *very* preliminary stage.

We will soon be ready to roll out an Alpha version of the game. This Alpha version will have all the major game features and it will be accessible to KS backers with Alpha Access. They will be able to taste the game, see how it works, and help us shaping the evolution of the game. We expect this to start by the end of fall 2013.

When the game is stable enough, we will launch the Private Beta, starting with KS backers with Beta Access and slowly expanding the user base to monitor servers load and bugs, while adjusting and enriching the game experience. We expect this phase to happen during the winter of 2013/2014.

After that, the game will be officially launched and it will require a subscription to be played. We don’t have exact plans yet, but we are planning to give a free 30-days, full-featured subscription plan to new players and then offer a 1 year subscription for 30$ (30€ for EU, where V.A.T. applies). We expect the game to be ready in the spring of 2014.

Risks and challenges

GOH is a big project, and not an easy one - we know for certain and we perfectly know that many challenges lie ahead. Can a small indie startup make it? Are these challenges too hard? We questioned ourselves in the beginning to be sure we could complete this wonderful project providing the right level of quality in the final game and the answers helped us identifying our possibilities and our limits.

We are absolutely committed to create a great online experience for all our players. We expect the game to proceed at a steady rate through the development stages. We will decide together with our Alpha and Beta players when every development step is OK to be ended, as we don’t want to provide a sub-optimal experience: as some great companies taught us, “The game is ready when it’s ready”. This could lead to some delays, even if we do everything we can to avoid it, especially between the Public Beta Stage and the final version; we will be completely transparent about our development cycle and we will keep everyone informed with updates every month or so. In this way, every KS backer will know exactly how things are going... and in the meantime, everyone will be able to play on our Public Beta for free.

We willingly chose to focus on a challenging gameplay, rather than on sophisticated graphics. We reached a great level of detail (you can judge by yourself looking at the gameplay videos we provided), and we are pretty happy about it; maybe we will review it in the future to make it even better, but this is *not* a priority for us: we firmly believe that a game must be FUN first, and if we have to choose between spending time and money to achieve a super-high level of realism and improving our gameplay, we will definitely go for the gameplay. Choosing a Sci-fi setting had an important role here: in a game where you mostly have ships going around in dark space, instead of complex organic figures moving in a detailed world full of environment objects and obstacles, providing a great-looking game is absolutely within our possibilities.
