Kill For A Copy - A Dark Chapter Press Horror Anthology
17 spectacular stories to scare, thrill, amuse and disgust in one chilling volume. A collection so good you might just kill for a copy.
Collecting 17 chilling horror and supernatural tales, Kill For A Copy boasts a foreword from Shaun Hutson, 'the Godfather of Gore' himself.
Dark Chapter Press has gathered a motley crew of authors most of whom are at the early stages of their writing careers, to showcase their grotesque works.
With visions of dark, fantastic worlds, disturbed minds and beasts beyond imagination, this collection will shock, scare and grant the occasional guilty chuckle as you immerse yourself in the nightmarish landscape forged by these newcomers.
In Kill For A Copy, Dark Chapter Press has unleashed a volume so essential to fans of horror fiction, who knows what lengths you will go to, to get your hands on a copy.
Dark Chapter Press was established in August 2014 following a successful campaign to launch the Jack Rollins novella The Séance. Since then, the Dark Chapter Press website has received almost 50,000 visitors and featured excellent monthly competitions from August 2014 to February 2015.
In January, the Dark Chapter Press site hosted Writer’s Block Month, where writers at all stages of their career gave advice on coping with the dreaded block. Contributors included Shaun Hutson, Graham Masterton and David Moody. The response to our initial open submission call was literally overwhelming and we recently called up prolific horror writer and editor Stuart Keane, to lend us his support.
Stuart is taking the lead on one of our planned summer releases. Now well-established with horror writers, it is time to move to the next phase and focus on attracting new readers to the exciting line-up of books we are launching this year. This includes Flashes In The Dark (a collection of flash fiction stories), Bloody Heather (a Scottish horror anthology), Under The Knife (a medical horror anthology) and Kids (as if parenthood isn’t horrific enough).
You are invited to join the launch of this new anthology, which will see your name included in the Special Thanks Kickstarter Backers page of the anthology, and on the Dark Chapter Press website.
Not only will you have supported this fantastic book, you will also have supported a small business to develop, and expand its reach. Imagine that, in a few years’ time when Dark Chapter Press has dozens of titles in the stable – you were there at the beginning, helping us to make sure we could grow. You get to feel all warm and fuzzy inside, like you just ate a warm and fuzzy creature.
One of the authors from this anthology has written about his experience with us. He's put it better than we can, and is perhaps a better source of information than us just telling you what we do:
Ok, so you know you don’t actually have to kill for a copy, it’s much more straightforward than that and without the risk of lifelong incarceration. But even if the book isn’t worthy of a homicide or two, it’s still one hell of a read. The current table of contents is as follows (final order to be decided):
- Introduction by Shaun Hutson
- Silver Bullets - Steve Jenner
- Time It Right - William G Chandler Jr
- Redwood - Angus Fenton
- Madness In Death Valley - M.R. Wallace
- Games - Audrey E.L. Coot
- Bovine Rule - S.L. Dixon
- Be Careful What You Wish For – Sharon L Higa - Click to read a Sample
- Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind - David Basnett - Click to read a sample
- The Coma - Stefan Lavery
- Am I Dead - Joe Bockus
- Hell Awaits - Feind Gottes
- Bon Appetit - Stuart Keane
- The Herald Of Our Times - Matthew Teah
- Blynd Haus - Robert J. Stava
- To See The Well - Luc Haasbroek
- Home, Sweet Home - Jack Rollins - Click to read a sample
- Bedlam Betty - Aghori Shaivite
We’ve got great variety here; from the ice-cold confines of a space station in The Herald Of Our Times, to the tongue-in-cheek Bovine Rule, and beyond, to the globe-trotting horror fantasy of Silver Bullets this is a collection to shock, scare and thoroughly entertain whether you are an established horror lover, or new to the genre. More than this, though, it is a collection to be proud of - especially when you become a backer and help to kick this book off in style.
As a small, new business with big plans, cash-flow is a delicate matter. Without the marketing department of a larger publishing company on hand, we rely on social networking, reviews and word of mouth to get our books known in the marketplace. In order to really make a difference, we need to place quality, focused advertising in publications that will really catch the attention of horror-lovers out there. The perfect way to do this is through a crowd-funding campaign. But, included in our initial goal, is enough money to pay each of the authors (except Jack Rollins who, as part of Dark Chapter Press is happy to forgo this payment in support of the project) a professional rate for short stories (3p per word – approx. 5cents a word). This money is not currently available to Dark Chapter Press, but we recognize that it is important to show respect for the authors involved, who would otherwise receive royalties from us over time, by paying them the established rate up front.
Note, that when they submitted the work, they did not know we were aiming to do this, they submitted knowing only that works above 3,000 words would receive a percentage of net profits.
If this campaign is successful, every author included, even those who produced less than 3,000 words, will receive that standard rate for their work. That will really help authors out there to see we mean business.
Should this campaign fall short of our initial goal, Kill For A Copy will still launch, but the marketing will be very limited, sales will be slower than we hope due to less exposure, and it will take much longer for us to gather enough net profit from the book to pay the authors the equivalent of the professional rate over time.
The result of this, is that it will take Dark Chapter Press longer to grow, it will take us longer to establish our reputation as a fair-dealing, high-quality press.
We have two basic pledge levels, one focused on a paperback copy of the new book and one focused on the e-book version. We then have a range of premium pledge levels which build upon the paperback pledge and offer the opportunity to have a character in your name, and another where you can receive a personalized story by working with one of our authors.
REWARD UPGRADE #1 - 07/05/15
As a bit of fun we have created an enhancement for our backers at the £10 and £25 levels. Starting from approximately 8pm GMT on 08/05/15 and on every Friday thereafter, we will draw backer names at random and offer the winners of the draw the opportunity to see their name attached to a minor character in a forthcoming story from one of our authors. You will, of course have the right to turn this down. The lucky winners will not be entered into any of these draws over the consecutive weeks.
To increase your chances of winning, it is important to get your pledge in early. The more backers we have, the more names we'll draw each week. And anyone who read my story Anti-Terror (in the anthology Carnage: Extreme Horror) will know that I can feature an awful lot of characters into a story and make them all special!
REWARD UPGRADE #2 - 22/05/15
As an additional thank you for backing the project, all backers at £25 and above will receive a postcard featuring the Kill For A Copy cover art as well as the original rewards and all stretch goals unlocked by the end of the campaign.
We are currently in negotiations to include an extra special story in this anthology. Once more details are settled and set in stone, we will feature an additional stretch goal to upgrade e-book and paperback copies of Kill For A Copy to include this story across all the relevant pledge levels. See also that some stretch goals will also see you receive our next anthology too.
Note: the No Frill For A Copy pledge level backers are exempt from all stretch goals (but feel free to upgrade your pledge by selecting a new pledge level, before the end to increase eligibility).
£4,200 - The first stretch goal will see backers of the Ebook Level, Paperback Level and above receive a copy of Flashes In The Dark, our flash fiction collection, as an Epub, for free, included in their reward package.
£4,500 – The second stretch goal will allow us to produce our first promotional item, a Dark Chapter Press bookmark. Backers of the Paperback pledge and above will receive one of these bookmarks included in their reward package.
£4,750 – This third stretch goal will allow us to produce a set of 4 promotional bookmarks, based on our logo and our 3 currently available titles. Once achieved, backers of the Paperback pledge and above will each receive a full set of the bookmarks.
£5,000 - With our fourth stretch goal, you will receive an E-PUB copy of our next anthology to be released this year. This will either be Kids or Bloody Heather (both are in process simultaneously). This reward applies to backers at both Ebook, Paperback levels and above.
£5,500 - With this stretch goal, backers at the Paperback level will receive a copy of our next paperback anthology release this year. This will be either Kids or Bloody Heather (both are in process simultaneously).
£7,000 – We will produce an exclusive Kickstarter Backers Edition of this book as a 6’x9’ paperback which will not be available for retail. The retail edition will be a 5’x8’ paperback.
We are currently working on additional stretch goals, but these will give a good sample of what we hope to achieve.
You will have the option to add-on either or both of our two currently available titles in paperback form. Simply add the amount shown to your pledge and make your selections in the pledge manager at the end of the campaign.
£8 - The Cabinet of Dr Blessing by Jack Rollins
£4 – The Séance by Jack Rollins
Click on the links above to learn more about these titles and read reviews.
With this Kickstarter, you will be charged separately for P&P, to be sent to us via Paypal, before your rewards will be shipped. The reason for this is simple, depending upon the stretch goals unlocked and the number of paperbacks to be shipped, the P&P will vary.
Our anticipated costs are as follows: Standard UK delivery per novel: £3. Standard US delivery per novel: £5. Note that these prices are subject to change. Smaller items such as the bookmarks will be shipped at a smaller rate, anticipated to be the cost of a normal letter postage in the UK, or standard international letter postage from UK to US.
Risks and challenges
The stories are in hand and going through the final editing process. Contracts are about to be issued and changes to individual stories are to be accepted/negotiated as is a normal process in book publishing. Any delay in receiving responses may have an impact on the delivery date.
Should any author decide not to proceed, we will seek an alternative story as a replacement, to, as far as is practicable, retain the value of this anthology as it stands in the original pitch (in terms of both word count and the quality of the stories contained within).
Problems encountered in the initial production run, which are beyond our control, could see a delay in reward fulfillment.
Should current negotiations fail with regard to the special guest author and their story, then this stretch goal will not be includedLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
