About this project
They came from Albion, from Gaule and Esbania and Batavia, in search of the treasures of the New World. They found a menace older than mankind – dragons! In their mountain lairs on the Dragon Isles, giant beasts – old and wise and malevolent – sit on their piles of gold, surrounded by their zombie minions. The natives have found ways of appeasing or evading them – the Dragon Tribes honour them with gold and human sacrifice, the other Islanders use their magic to hide away or resist. The Uropans must rely on gunpowder and cold steel. And the pirates? The pirates will use whatever comes to hand in their battle with the dragons. Armed with science, sorcery, steel and superstition, they take the fight into the dragons’ lairs in their endless quest for gold.
Pirates & Dragons is a tabletop role-playing game of fantasy swashbuckling in a world of magic and treasure, of fantastical islands inhabited by strange beasts and vile necromancers, of treachery and heroism. Together with a group of friends, you take on the role of pirates, out for adventure and booty – raiding the treasure galleons of Esbania, the merchant fleets of Gaule and Batavia, the dragon-hunting ships of Albion, the ruins of lost Adalantas... and the gold-filled caves of ancient and evil dragons. Gather your crew. Load your flintlocks. And prepare to plunder!
Pirates & Dragons features slick, cinematic game mechanics based on the acclaimed Renaissance D100 system, and is compatible with other D100 system games.
Cakebread & Walton have been creating fine role-playing games since 2010, and working in the industry even longer. Our games include the critically acclaimed Clockwork & Chivalry line (“The best British fantasy setting since WFRP 1st edition,” says Newt Newport, author of OpenQuest) and the UK Games Expo Award winner and Origins-nominated Abney Park’s Airship Pirates, as well as the D100 black-powder rules system Renaissance Deluxe and critically acclaimed supplements such as the 18th century Cthulhu Mythos setting, Dark Streets (“These guys are making some of the most amazing historical books I’ve seen in a very long time...” says RPG Pundit). Cakebread & Walton's games have previously been published by Cubicle 7 Entertainment - this is our first project as an independent company.

Risks and challenges
Cakebread & Walton have been producing RPG books since 2010. We have been working in the RPG business for a combined total of 25 years. We have produced 15 titles to date. Most of the writing and artwork for Pirates & Dragons is complete, and will be finished in the next few weeks, after which only layout remains to be done. All print orders will be fulfilled via DriveThruRPG. We will keep backers informed of our progress, and in the unlikely event that there are delays due to illness or attack by ravenous beasts, you'll be the first to know.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
A: No. Players get to play one of the five main human cultures in the game. There are other intelligent cultures, such as the mysterious High Adalantans, the bestial Low Adalantans, and the Insect People, but they (for now at least) are NPC races.
A: The P&D rules are much more cinematic. Hero Points have been replaced with Doubloons, and you can do much more fancy stunts with them. Also, we have a simple experience system, where you can spend improvement points on shiny Talents (some of which stack). The magic system is much simplified. Like all our Renaissance system games, you can pick and choose, so it would be perfectly possible to play it as a grim and gritty game with the original Renaissance Deluxe rulebook.
A: There are ship rules, and crew-to-crew combat rules, but they’re very simple. The emphasis is very much on role-playing and character action rather than anything resembling wargaming.
The system is basically a version of Renaissance, which is based on OpenQuest, which is based on RuneQuest. So if you're familiar with any of the D100 system games, this will be easy to pick up. But we've added a swashbuckling layer to the rules, to give it more of the cinematic feel of our Abney Park's Airship Pirates RPG. We watched *lots* of pirate movies before revamping the combat rules, so if you've seen it in a movie, you can do it in our game.
In terms of theme and style, its Pirates of the Caribbean meets The Golden Voyage of Sinbad with a touch of D&D. Double-crossing pirates, corrupt island governors, zombies, ancient ruins, giant critters, animated statues, forgotten magic, and ancient and sinister dragons.
