Update #8 (4/1/13): 2 Hours Left and Third Stretch Goal Reached!
"There's no such thing as an ordinary human" ~ 10th Doctor. This is exactly how we feel here at PixelWho. All of our backers have been EXTRAORDINARY in helping us reach our third stretch goal in our last few hours!
On top of the previously mentioned bonus rewards everyone now gets to vote on which Doctor will be the subject of the next Character poster. All backers get a say in our project! You'll get to follow the progression of the poster on our public Facebook page, which we'll update regularly. As the project progresses all backers will receive a special set of 3x4 cards with iconic characters from that Doctor. The selection of characters for the 3x4 cards can also be voted on by the community.
Updates to follow after this project finishes. Cheers and very heartfelt thanks for this fantastic journey!
Update #7 (3/31/13): Final Day and Second Stretch Goal Reached!
"It is the end . . . but the moment has been prepared for"~ 4th Doctor. The generosity of our backers in these final hours has obliterated our second stretch goal, meaning more FREE art for everybody! We’ll be giving away two sizes of the "11 Doctors and TARDIS" poster in addition to the previously announced bonus gifts. All backers will receive this new art print; those giving less than $20 will get the 5x7 size and those giving $20 or more get the 8x10 size. Just a few hours remain; let everyone know that they should back us right now so that they can also join in on the free swag fest!
Don't forget that if we hit our final stretch goal, everyone will be able to follow the creation of the next PixelWho character poster and receive more free art!
Pixel Perfect: A Complete Visual Character Dictionary for the Doctor Who Fans
The PixelWho project came about through a desire of the artist to combine his passion for the British science fiction program “Doctor Who” with the 8-bit artistic style of 80’s video games, which also carries a great deal of nostalgia for him. It is an attempt to be the most complete catalog of Doctor Who characters in order to celebrate the creativity and dedication of all the artists who have worked on the program over the last 50 years.
The overall goal is to document every character, both significant and insignificant, from every Doctor's respective movie/series runs. Nathan freeze frames DVDs and scours episode screen captures in order to recreate each character accurately and roughly to scale. Every pixel is individually laid by hand; no computer conversion program is used. His art is a true labor of love which requires dedication and time. For example the 10th Doctor poster took 4 months of work to create. The lost episodes of William Hartnell’s (the 1st Doctor’s) era were recreated by referencing production photos, telesnaps, and promotional materials.
The Doctor Who art prints are high-quality limited edition lithograph prints. They are individually numbered; only 500 of each Doctor poster have and ever will be made. Nathan has now completed the art for the 4th Doctor, Tom Baker's, epic 7 seasons run. All the main and incidental characters are represented over two posters, each 25x28 inches in size. The main aim of this Kickstarter is to help fund the printing of these new designs. The art is done, now it just needs to be made into tangible art prints.
The smaller PixelWho items and posters are printed locally in Virginia. The large Doctor posters (1st and 10th) are printed in Florida by a specialized eco-friendly printer. The printing of each Doctor poster set saves 1/3 of a tree, 133 gallons of water, 100,000 BTUs of energy, 8 pounds of solid waste and 30 pounds of greenhouse gasses over traditional offset printing methods. The paper they’re printed on is made with 100% recycled fiber, 60% of which is post-consumer and the inks are soy-based. All processing is chlorine-free and the printing plant is run on renewable energy and is offset by carbon credits.

Stretch Goals for this Project
Stretch Goal #1: GOAL MET!
Reach $6500 in funding and everyone will receive a print of Tom Baker's pixelated face. Anyone who donates $20 and under will receive a postcard size version and anyone who donates $20 and over will get a 5x7 art print version.
Stretch Goal #2: GOAL MET!
Reach $7500 in funding and everyone will get an unreleased print design which features all 11 Doctors.
Stretch Goal #3: GOAL MET!
Reach $9000 and all our backers will get to vote on which Doctor will be the subject of the next Character poster. You will then be able to follow the progress of its creation step-by-step on our Facebook page. As the project progresses all backers will receive a special set of 3x4 cards with iconic characters from that Doctor. The selection of characters for the 3x4 cards can also be voted on by the community.
Stretch Goal #4:
Reach $10,000 and all our backers will get an unreleased new art piece that Nathan is currently creating. It's so new no image has been posted anywhere. It's being kept a secret until we reach our 4th stretch goal. The only clue we're giving is that it is based on a Doctor Who image that is one of the most popular currently circulating the internet.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
PixelWho is a company run by a husband and wife team. Nathan is the artist and his wife Ly is the business brain. With just two team members the only possible challenge is getting rewards shipped out in a timely manner since we take great care to ensure that all domestic orders are carefully packaged, insured, and tracked; and that international orders have correct customs paperwork. However we have estimated delivery times that should be sufficient to cover any possible delays. Some things like printer production times are beyond PixelWho's control, but the printers that will be used have done very good work for us in the past and we have strong working relationships with them.
Add-ons are a way for you to get extra products by adding funds to your current pledge. Let's say you wanted the Every Dalek Poster and also wanted to get the Every Doctor Bookmark as well. When you pledge go down the rewards list and choose the $20 tier (Extermination level). Go back up to the top of the page and enter the TOTAL amount of your pledge, so for the Dalek poster and Doctor bookmark you would enter $30 at the top. If the project is successfully funded a survey will be sent out to confirm everyone's add on selections to ensure everyone will get what they are expecting. If you're still unsure about how to do an add-on please feel free to e-mail us (firstname.lastname@example.org).
The add-on option is perfect for you. Choose the level that has most of the things you want and follow the instructions above. E.g. You want two bookmarks and one character card. You would choose the Regeneration reward level ($10) then at the top of the pledge page enter $25 for the total amount. This total comes from $10 (bookmark) + $10 (2nd bookmark) + $5 (character card). Once the project is successfully funded a survey will be sent to backers to confirm add-on selections. Still unsure? Please feel free to e-mail us (email@example.com).
All pledge levels include the cost of shipping, yay! The only time you need to add extra for shipping is if your item will be shipped outside the United States. Below each pledge level we've indicated how much extra will be added to your pledge in order to ship the item outside the US. Feel free to e-mail us if you still have questions!
Good question! We have this statement on the main PixelWho website:
"Doctor Who, The TARDIS, the Daleks and other associated trademarks of the BBC, Terry Nation and other associated rights holders are their property and no infringement is intended. PixelWho is set up to sell original artwork handmade pixel-by-pixel by the artist and does not use any visual assets belonging to or created by the above individuals or institutions and conforms to internationally recognized terms of fair use."
That said, because this is original artwork we are able to make reference to elements in the popular culture without infringing copyrights so licensing is not necessary. If we were trying to pass our work off as officially licensed products then we might have a problem.
We hope this helps to assuage any reservations anyone may have had about the project in this regard. We feel confident that our work will not ruffle any legal feathers.
