The COVR Photo Camera-Lens Case is a smartphone case with a built-in lens so you can capture candid pictures without ruining the moment
**COVR Photo Update June 10th 2015**
Dear Kickstarter Community,
It is clear to us that at this late date in our campaign that we are very unlikely to meet our funding goal so we’ve decided to suspend the campaign, analyze where we missed the mark, make the corrections, and then re-launch our COVR Photo 6 Kickstarter project better prepared in the next several weeks.
We have personally notified each of our COVR 6 backers to share with them in detail the areas we see we could have done better, to give them key insight into how we’ll make those changes and let them know how grateful we are for them. If you were one of our many backers and did not receive a personal email for some reason, please let us know at email@example.com so we can share with you some important news only for our original COVR 6 backers.
If you are not one of the original COVR 6 backers but found our page after we suspended the project, please shoot us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll notify you when we relaunch in the next several weeks. Or feel free to visit it our online commerce site at covrphoto.com.
If you’ve got feedback for us, want to offer us your encouragement, have any questions whatsoever or want to purchase a COVR 5 case for your iPhone 5 please feel free to email us at email@example.com and we'll be ready to respond.
Thank you again to everyone who continues to support us and we look forward to turning something that tastes sour today into something that is going to taste sweet tomorrow.Sincerely,
Founder & President
What Exactly Is COVR Photo?
The COVR Photo Camera-Lens Case is a U.S. patented protective iPhone case with a built in sliding camera lens which allows anyone who takes pictures with their mobile phone to capture candid moments of the world around them. The COVR Photo mobile phone case is a one off photography tool that helps us make better, more natural - not posed - pictures of friends, family, our children or those we meet in life's travels and adventures. Through it's unique design and the high-quality prism which we built directly into the case, COVR frees you to take pictures more easily with one hand and with more subtlety because you can hold your phone in various angles and positions and NOT just in front of your face.
What Problems Does COVR Solve?
Great Question! The COVR Photo Camera-Lens Case solves four distinct problems we all face when we're trying to capture special, candid moments that become our favorite memories.
• Subtle & Unobtrusive - This matters because whether you're a mom or dad trying to shoot a video of your kids in the midst of some lovable mischievous moment, or a street photographer documenting the hard streets of New York or Beijing; being able to keep your camera phone in a less obvious position helps to not interrupt the uniqueness of what is unfolding before you.
• Easier to Hold & Shoot - Apple designed the iPhone so that it could be used in the easiest possible way: cradled in one hand and operated with your thumb or a finger from your other hand. COVR Photo has extended this same natural position principal and functionality to taking pictures with your iPhone. Nonexistent until now — there is no need to hold your phone up when capturing a moment. Keeping your phone steady and with just a slide of the lens you are now able to capture a real moment when it happens.
• Always Ready - Today, the best camera we have is the one we always have with us: our camera-phone. Having a COVR Photo lens Case makes it even easier than ever to capture a special moment or amazing photo without missing it because it’s a protective case that’s always on your iPhone – it’s not an attachable lens buried in your pack or purse or sitting on your desk at home.
• More Choices - COVR Photo is designed so that you have a choice between taking a photo with the standard iPhone lens OR slide the COVR Photo lens forward and allow yourself to capture your images and videos from a different angle, with a different look.
My Inspiration For Creating COVR
A few years ago my young and healthy wife Angela was expecting our fourth son, Samuel. Several months into her pregnancy she began experiencing some unusual pains. Over the course of a month it was ultimately determined that Angela had an advance stage cancer. Not long after her diagnosis, our son Samuel was born prematurely, and doctors were unable to save him. The idea of COVR came out of our urgency to make sure that we captured real, natural, and timeless photos and videos of our loved ones and above all, our three little boys – James, Dakota and Reilly. With a very uncertain future ahead of us as a family, we knew we needed to capture as many special moments as we could so our boys would always have a picture to look at or a video to watch when they wanted to hear or see their mom and how much she loved them if the cancer took her life. The first thing we did was set out buying a new digital camera and a new digital video camera, but at the end of the day we realized the device we used almost exclusively was the device in our back pocket, our smartphones. This created a problem we weren’t expecting: our kids had become so accustomed to seeing us lift our smartphones in front of our faces to take their picture or to shoot a video they would either stop what they were doing to awkwardly pose, or they’d suddenly become shy or stubborn and refuse to have their picture taken. While all our boys knew their mom was sick, they had no idea how important it was for us to capture the special moments right then and there. I was desperate to find a solution. That solution came to me as I was sitting on my couch watching two different baseball games on two different TV channels. During a commercial on one channel I would point my TV remote at the TV and press a button to jump to the other game. After doing this a few times, I thought, “why couldn’t we operate our smartphone cameras like we operate a TV remote? Why can’t we just point the smartphone towards our subject, look down at the screen to compose our picture, and press the shutter button?” It was exactly what Angela and I needed to help us capture real and lasting moments and it was when I began to wonder if there were other people out there who could capture beautiful pictures with an invention like COVR Photo.
Just as Angela and I have now experienced using COVR Photo, moms and dads around the world are going to finally be able to capture candid moments with your family without the frustration of missing the moment trying to get your hands free. COVR Photo spares the headaches of being caught attempting to capture the candid moment and end up with a picture of goofy faces.
And while parents love COVR Photo, it’s also an AMAZING tool for professional journalists and documentary photographers, like those I worked alongside for 20 years as a photojournalist.
Currently we have thousands of COVR Photo 5 Camera-Lens Cases for the iPhone 5 in the hands of world-class photojournalists and world-class parents! Both the pros and parents are making wonderful photographs and their responses have been terrific. Angela and I have a dream, and that dream begins with our passion for COVR cases to be the tool that allows all of you to take amazing pictures of your family, friends, and the world around you. As our family can attest, life will throw all of us curveballs, and we never want you to miss the moments that matter, the moments that will last life times.
The COVR Photo Team
COVR Photo was founded by inventor and visionary Thomas Hurst. Thomas has spent the last year assembling a gifted team of specialists that includes industrial designers, mechanical and software engineers, optics engineers, and drawing his relationships from around the world to assist and advise on international & domestic manufacturing, brand development & marketing, startup business development leaders, and media marketing experts. The COVR Team has the tested expertise in all areas of design and manufacturing to make the COVR Photo 6 a success.
Manufacturing Process & Delivery Timeline
The COVR Photo cases you see in the videos and pictures are real, finished prototypes. The CAD models for the lens and case are complete and ready to start the tooling process.
The free COVR Photo app is completely functional, available on the App Store and being used by thousands of COVR 5 case users around the world. We have taken hundreds of pictures with the COVR Photo prototypes and given them to several iPhone users and professional photographers to test and give us feedback. We are confident we have a solid design and are ready for the final push to build production units.
By contributing to our KickStarter campaign, you are helping us bring our second product, the COVR 6 for iPhone 6 to market. We have spent $50K of our own money to develop the COVR 6 to the point that of starting the tooling phase of manufacturing, but it will take another $25k to pay for the injection molding phase, shipping, and fulfillment services needed to deliver our cases. The funds raised on KickStarter will be used to pay for the molding phase of manufacturing, cost of multiple case colors, packaging and related expense to get the first production run of COVR Photo 6 cases completed and in your hands.
As we already mentioned, we've actually been able to begin manufacturing of the three tools needed to make the COVR 6 parts. It takes the manufacturer 4-6 weeks to make the tools, however, we are already three weeks into this phase as of the launch of this campaign. Once our project is funded we'll immediately place orders for the injection molded parts which will take about 4-5 weeks to be produced and delivered to us. The COVR optical lenses are a very challenging process, but we already have them in stock and ready to be installed into the COVR 6 cases.
After we run trials on the tools and have proven the parts meet or exceed our standards, there will be a small pre-production run (about a 2 week process) where we test the assembly process and verify we can produce a quality product. After successful pre-production runs, we will start full scale manufacturing which will take about 30 days to complete - dependent on the total number of rewards required. We will start shipping product to the fulfillment service within 10 days of the start of production and continue shipping product each week. The total time from the end of our Kickstarter campaign to shipping our first units will be 60 days or less. Our goal is to deliver sooner!
We have an experienced team that has executed new designs through production and shipping which makes us confident we can meet the schedule we've laid out.
Risks and challenges
Risks and challenges
We have designed, built, and tested multiple COVR 6 case prototypes and the engineering of the lens and the case is complete. The COVR Photo App is done and already on the App Store, with only tweaks needed to improve performance. The prism lens is already in production at a world class manufacturing facility in the US. The case has been engineered for injection molding, and we have already selected world class manufacturing facilities for building the COVR Photo case parts. The big challenge is to build the injection mold tooling for production parts. While there is some risk in this process, we have built and tested the prototypes to ensure they are ready for final tooling.
Tooling is expensive and time consuming, however we have a lot of experience with injection molding so the risk is minimal. In addition to our design engineer, we have a tooling engineer with 30 years of experience working with the tooling vendor to get the molds done right.
While we have done everything possible to reduce the risk, there is always the potential for something to not go right. With a team of four working on the tooling and production, we are confident we can get through any challenge that comes our way. We learned a lot on our fist COVR case for the iPhone 5 and are ready to deliver a great COVR Photo 6 case.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
