$175,000 Stretch Goal - Accomplished!
Thank you all, so very much, for helping us reach our Stretch Goal - The Busy Dress Line! We will begin working with our designer and pattern maker to develop these awesome dresses and move them to production as soon as possible.
The Busy Dress line is available NOW through this Kickstarter campaign. Add $50 to any shipped pledge, and you'll receive your choice of Busy Dress too!
**Please keep in mind that the Busy Dresses will retail for over $50. Also, the new final Busy Dresses will look different than the original, handmade samples below and we do not yet know when they will ship. **
Please see our Project Update #8 for details regarding the Busy Dresses and how to pledge.
Filling the Gap in the Girls' Clothing Market
If you know a little girl, or you were once a little girl, then you know.
Lots of little girls love dresses and rainbows and flowers and pink. And lots of those same little girls love cars and robots and pirates and dinosaurs.
But if you’ve ever tried to buy those little girls clothes that are pink and have dinosaurs, or are sparkly and have pirates, or even just a dress with a robot on it, then you know it’s pretty much impossible. Princess Awesome wants to change that.
We believe that if a girl likes purple and also likes trucks, she should be able to wear a purple truck dress. And if a girl likes princesses and also aliens, then an alien princess skirt is for her.
We also believe that if a girl would prefer to skip the "princess" and stick with the "awesome," she deserves some dress options that feature a range of colors and topics.
We are Princess Awesome because butterflies are awesome and so are airplanes. Because monsters are awesome and so are twirly skirts. Because girls are awesome and girls decide what it means to be girly.
Moving to Factory Production
After selling out of 75% of our handmade original styles in six weeks and selling out repeatedly online for the last year, we can no longer keep up with demand as an in-house shop. It is time to move Princess Awesome into factory production!
We are starting with our play dress and skirted infant snapsuit in three styles. The play dresses will be available in sizes 2T - 12, and the snapsuits in sizes 3-18 months.
(Note: Kickstarter does not allow you to edit a reward level that someone has already chosen. Despite that, rest assured, ALL FIVE designs are offered at every reward level and in sizes up to 12.)
- Pi Play Dress
This was, by far, our most popular style of play dress. Now that's the power of 3.14159... ! Both kids and parents loved it - one little girl told us, "I love my dress so much, I just want to give it a big hug!"
All of these fabulous girls are wearing dresses from our first factory-production sample run.
- Dinosaur Play Dress
In the same play dress silhouette, this dress will feature a brand new, custom-designed dinosaur print created by our rocket scientist-by-day, graphic designer-by-night Elishka Jepson. It is paired with a blue top or blue snapsuit. (The dinosaurs are about 3 inches long on this print).
- Pirates Play Dress
Another Princess Awesome original print by Elishka Jepson, this pirate-themed treasure map design will be paired with a black top or black snapsuit. (The telescopes are about 2 inches long on this print).
- Atomic Shells Play Dress
Atomic elements with their orbital shells! This style is paired with an apple green top or snapsuit. (The largest shell is about 2 inches long).
- Super Secret Hidden Ninja!
Looks like pretty flowers, right? But there are NINJA hiding in plain sight! This pattern is paired with a magenta top or snapsuit. (The ninja are about 1" tall).
- Infinity Scarf
A 55" infinity scarf for our adult backers, available in any of our patterns as a separate reward, or as an add-on to any dress/snapsuit pledge.
Kickstarter Only! As a special thank-you for backing us, each dress, snapsuit, and scarf will ship with a matching 1" pin!
Please note: Pins are for adult Kickstarter backers! As you may know, pins have sharp points and can also be a choking hazard. We trust those over the age of 3 not to swallow them and to attempt not to stab themselves.
Please Note: The Busy Dress line is offered in sizes 2T-6.
After the Princess Awesome Kickstarter successfully funds, you will receive a survey to indicate the size, style, and shipping location for your reward(s).

Where We Started
In the spring of 2013, Rebecca went to buy her daughter pajamas from a big mainstream store. She bought a few sets of cute, pastel pajamas with ice cream cones and hearts from the girls' section and a few sets of red and blue pajamas with robots and rocket ships from the boys' section.
On her way out, she passed the girls' section and glanced through the dresses, the only article of clothing other than pajamas that her daughter would wear at that time (or currently, for that matter!). "It's too bad," she thought, "that there are no dresses with robots on them, because she would totally wear one. Or a dress with a truck. Or a dinosaur. Or an airplane. Or a pirate. Or a train. But those don't exist."
With no more than a brief conversation with Eva about the sad state of the thematic divide between girls' and boys' clothes, Princess Awesome was born. And we got to work.
In the fall of 2013, we created our first test batch of dresses in Eva's basement on a 1948 Singer sewing machine:
1) Original Play Dress and Skirted Snapsuit: a patterned skirt with a solid color top, available in 9 styles of varying sleeve length or on a snapsuit. Browse through our originals on our website!
2) Busy Dress: a full-skirted sleeveless dress with a vehicle attached on a string.
3) Special Occasion Art Dress: Ruffles and flounces adorn dresses incorporating imagery from famous works of art.
Within three weeks, we had sold 75% of our original stock and made more in batches over the course of the following year, all of which also sold out within a few weeks of production.
At this point, we simply cannot keep up with demand! It is time to move out of the basement and into a factory.
After this Kickstarter funds our first factory-produced line, our next step as a company will be to move additional styles, including the Busy Dress and Art Styles lines, into factory production.
Styling, Designing, and Sourcing
Styling: Our fabric has just enough stretch to dispense with pesky buttons and zippers. The skirts on our play dresses allow freedom of movement to climb trees, run races, and do all the things active children love to do. Making our dresses sleeveless means year-round wear - girls can always wear a shirt and tights to keep warm and still enjoy their favorite dress.
Print Design: Our lead designer, Elishka Jepson, is a rocket scientist in Tucson, Arizona, who loves designing graphics. Using her background in engineering, she creates colorful, busy, happy patterns that appeal to both children and adults.
Sourcing: We have chosen a 100% cotton jersey fabric that is soft, comfortable, and perfect for play clothes. Our skirt fabrics are printed in Los Angeles, California, and the top fabrics will be custom-dyed in Montreal, Quebec. Our dresses are produced in New York and Chicago.
Where Is the Money Going?
The money from this Kickstarter will truly kick start Princess Awesome. It will allow us to create approximately 800 play dresses and 300 skirted snapsuits. Many of these will be given as rewards to our backers, and the rest will stock our inventory for our first line of factory-produced clothing. If we make our goal, Princess Awesome will be on solid financial footing to continue making awesome clothes for awesome girls well into the future.
Here is a breakdown of where the money from this Kickstarter is going. The majority of cost is in labor and fabric.
The Bottom Line
A recent Huffington Post article discussed the potential negative consequences to children's social development that clothing with messages containing gender stereotypes could have. It is crucial that girls have access to clothes that tell them that they can be and do anything. If you've ever met a little girl, you know they already know this is true.
Princess Awesome is a company founded by women - mothers - who want girls to be able to express themselves through their clothing. We are committed to making clothes that girls want to wear, and that parents want to see on their daughters.
Our guiding principle is to listen to what girls like to wear, do, and play, and to make that available to them - so girls can wear all that they are.
Please share the Princess Awesome Kickstarter campaign with friends and family who are interested in expanding the girls' clothing market and creating a different kind of girly!
Risks and challenges
Supply Chain Delays: This is the biggest potential risk and unknown. Once we reach our goal and set our production line into motion, we will have fabric printed in L.A. and dyed in Montreal. Both companies have given us reasonable estimates on timing for fulfilling our orders, but things can happen. Because both of these fabrics are necessary for making the dresses, if there are delays at either facility, there will be delays in fulfillment. Once the production facility has the materials, they could experience a rush of orders, and the expected time frame of 4 - 6 weeks could be extended. We will do everything we can to stay on top of projected timetables and check in frequently with our affiliates so that we are notified of any potential delays as soon as possible.
