About

This Kickstarter is to create Holler, an all-ages 25 page comic about the value of friendship.

The story:

Holler is a story about Peter Paisley, a young boy in a depressed mining town, an alien trying to prove itself, and the power of knowledge, will, and friendship. Together, they work to uncover a political conspiracy and free incarcerated aliens from a government bunker and the population of West Virginia from oppression and poverty.

Characters:

Peter Paisley is an 11-year-old living in Southern West Virginia. He is picked on and ostracized but very smart.

Its Royal Highness Zelerphanoblerichanious (you can call it Zelph) is trying to prove itself worthy of its position and family. The 300th of its brood, there isn’t much point to life and it's kind of a screw up. So, it stole a scout ship and went in search of greatness.

Early color test

Colonel Ratcher is the head of a shadowy government agency that secures, hides, and exploits alien technology. Some of this technology is kept for the governments use, the rest is sold to corporations to use as “innovative technology”. Where do you think cell phones and the internet came from. Ratcher is obsessed with his job because as a kid, his parents were killed when a flying saucer crashed into their house in Roswell, New Mexico.

Setting:

In West Virginia, there is a sort of Bermuda Triangle of federal establishments. In the North is the FBI building at Clarksburg. In the South is the Greenbrier Hotel and the presidential fallout bunker beneath it. To the West of this are the NSA listening station at Sugar Grove and the radio telescope observatory in Greenbank. This observatory was the birthplace of SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) and is a National Quiet Zone where no cell phones or Wi-Fi are permitted. The rest of the state is kept largely in ignorance and poverty. Most of the industry and economy centers on exporting coal for corporations.

Premise:

A tentacled alien crashes in WV. The people there are exploited by corporations for the once abundant coal. They have been kept impoverished and uneducated, happy just to have a job in the mines. Peter dreams of leaving WV for a place where his mom can find a job and he won’t be picked on. Running from bullies, Peter finds the alien crash. Shadowy government agents arrive and attempt to capture Peter and the alien. Peter tries to run, but the alien uses its tentacles to control Peter’s body and together they fight off the agents. Peter and the alien become friends. Peter attempts to hide the alien in his “hideout” an abandoned mine entrance near his trailer home. The agents arrive again and Peter is captured. The shadow government agency wants to exploit the alien and its technology. They offer money, relocation, a job for his mom, all if Peter will tell them where the alien is. Ultimately, Peter must decide between getting everything he thought he wanted or risking himself to save his alien friend.

Goal

Comic pages

The main goal of this project is to raise $5,000 to print 1000 copies of the book. It will be a standard size comic book with glossy cover and 60lb interior pages. The base goal is the cost of paying the artist, printing, and shipping the books. If we make it past the goal, we have ideas of how to make the book even better for you. The stretch goals will add to the book and fund the creating of future issues of Holler.

Risks and challenges

As this is my second Kickstarter campaign, I have a clear idea of the challenges involved. The biggest risks are typically production timelines, costs, and trying to package and ship the books and rewards. This is a true labor of love and I’ve partnered with an incredible artist to bring this story to you. I’ve already paid the artist for the first 10 pages. The book is nearly halfway complete already so the risk of not completing it is very small. But I need your help to finance paying for the rest of them and for printing and distribution of the book.
