About this project
** FOR THOSE WHO ARE ALREADY BACKERS OF THE NEW 8-bit HEROES WHO MAY HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS PROJECT'S RELATIONSHIP TO THAT ONE, PLEASE READ THE FAQ AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE **
What is Mystic Searches?
It's Retro. It's Modern. It can be each. And for the first time we're aware of, it can be both. Mystic Searches is a game for both the original, cartridge based, 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System as well as modern consoles. The two games are unique and self-contained; one on an actual cartridge the way games were played in the eighties, and one as a downloadable experience for modern systems. However, the two generations of this fantasy world can also be combined and interact to extend the story and the experience.

Big, big news on the Mystic Searches front! Things are going great. So great, in fact, we’re seeking another round of funding to take full advantage of the amazing opportunities that have developed to take this project to the next level.
First and foremost, the interest and support for this game-film combo has been astounding. Since the project began last October we’ve created a rich fantasy world we can’t wait to share with you. We’ve solved most of the technical challenges underlying the project. We have a functioning game engine, and are currently building assets and designing levels.
Additionally, we’ve traveled across the country, meeting other homebrewers and experts in game design, fantasy narrative and concept art to enrich our work conceptually, and we’ve filmed the entire adventure so far. The film and the NES game are shaping up to be something really special.
We’ve gotten national-level attention with the inclusion of our game on prime-time network television, and with it, the opportunity to bring the NES homebrew community greater exposure. The challenge of building a hardware-functioning game for a bygone game system was not something even some members of our team were aware was possible. With our game and film, we’d like to change that.
As we’ve traveled, many of the people we’ve met have been excited to learn about the project, but missed the opportunity to pre-order it the first time around. Well, we want to make sure everyone who’s interested gets a chance to back this project and be part of the fun when the first playable elements start rolling out later this year.
But it’s not just players who want in on the action. In developing the modern game component for this project, our team has grown by many talented and amazing modelers, environment and texture artists, and their contributions have been mind-blowing. We definitely want to keep them on board because…
We’ve been in talks with Nintendo about the possibility of bringing Mystic Searches to the Wii U! This is an astounding development, and well beyond the scope of what we originally imagined for the modern game. And with the amazing group of artists we’ve assembled, we can totally make it happen. This would be a huge coup for the project, and truly a capstone for its potential - fulfilling not only the dream of bringing a game to the NES, but to its modern successor; a genuine time-warping magical bridge!
All along, we’ve tried to manage expectations in saying the modern game will not be a triple-A title, but it will be fun to play and pay off on the concept of a cross-platform gaming experience. With this development, however, we have the opportunity to make the modern game-NES connection more than a technological novelty, but a truly enriching complete world to explore, comparable with other commercial titles.
Lastly, our path of discovery has lead us to the door of David Sardy - a vastly accomplished composer, producer and longtime musical inspiration. In a gesture indicative of the kind of excitement and support we’ve been thrilled to receive thus far, David has offered to help produce the soundtrack for the game.
While we’re easily on time and budget to fulfill the NES game, documentary, and tutorials as planned—and that will happen no matter what this round of funding raises—the adventure has taken a new turn with amazing opportunities we can only explore with the additional support we believe exists for this project.
So this is the time.
If you want in on the most amazing retro gaming adventure going, or if—like us—you’d like to see this project go all the way and fulfill its full potential as a modern console game in addition to its NES and documentary film components, please pledge. There are dozens of ways to be involved, from all-digital downloads to multi-media collector’s packages, to producer-level sponsorships and putting our hard-won game design tools and expertise to work for you. If you’re already one of the party, double down with us and help us take this adventure to the next level. Or back this project for the first time and begin your own Mystic Searches today. Adventure awaits!
An epic journey begins: a land in danger, a hero in the making!
Risks and challenges
We're working on both NTSC and PAL versions of the NES game. The timing for refresh rate is different. Because of this, we will have to rework the PAL version slightly to play right timing wise and that may take a little longer.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
