The Sacred Dance Guild embraces a rich diversity of dance styles, cultures, spiritual traditions and abilities. SDG's Dance A World of Hope Festival 2012 brings together people of all faiths and abilities to honor the divine and sacred in dance. This project will fund workshops and performances by special guests, Dancing Wheels and Carla DeSola.
Dancing Wheels is a arts and disabilities organization started by the first American professional wheel chair dancer, Mary Verdi-Fletcher. The company works to educate, entertain, and advocate the belief that if dance is an expression of the human spirit, it is best expressed by people of all abilities. This project will bring Dancing Wheels to perform for the community at our festival faculty concert, teach an all abilities dance workshop, and offer dancers an opportunity to audition for the company's next season. In addition the festival concert features diverse performances by Dianne Eno (environmental dance), Shahrzad Khorsandi (Persian dance), Kathryn Mihelick and Andrea Shearer (liturgical/ballet), Denise Damon Wade (modern), and Jason Warley (jazz). Our partnership with Dancing Wheels is intended to promote inclusiveness and create dialogue amongst our members and Michigan residents. Dancing Wheels possesses an international touring status, connections with the local community, and shared philosophies that dance is powerful and unifying.
Carla DeSola is a pioneer in contemporary liturgical dance. She is a dancer, choreographer, teacher and author. She has a Diploma from Juilliard, and an MA from the Pacific School of Religion (PSR). Carla founded the Omega Liturgical Dance Company, in residence at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City for 25 years, and directs Omega West Dance Company in Berkeley, CA. She also teaches courses in sacred dance at PSR and through the Center for the Arts, Religion & Education at the Graduate Theological Union. The author of books and articles on liturgical dance, Carla also created a video Movement Meditations to the Songs of Taize, which is available on DVD from Paulist Press. Carla is an honorary member and long-time instructor of Sacred Dance.
