About this project
Over 3 years in the making, this 120-page artbook bestiary includes the anatomy, behavior, and origins of over 20 amazing fantasy creatures. Each interconnected through a series of recorded histories, myths, and first-hand encounters that stress the value of exploration and curiosity in the face of superstition.
With your support, I will be able to create an initial printing of A Natural History of the Fantastic and build a foundation for future releases based on the intersection of fantasy art and biology.
Featured in this unique collection of creatures you'll find illustrations of:
Along with detailed anatomy, artifacts, and biological histories for each incredible entry!
Who is this book for?
• FANTASY ART LOVERS- This beautifully bound book measures 8x10 and is printed on thick high-quality photo paper. It makes for the perfect conversation starter or coffee table centerpiece for art enthusiasts and aspiring fantasy nerds (like me).
• ANYONE PASSIONATE ABOUT LEARNING ANATOMY OR BIOLOGY- Learning is fun! And what’s more fun than learning anatomy by studying dragon wings or recognizing the effects of natural-selection on distant goblin populations? Whatever your interests, this book will bring beauty, narrative, and accessibility to the study of biology.
• RPG PLAYERS- This book is a great addition to any gamer’s collection! Use it as the basis for a campaign or an in-game source for enemy weak points, dispositions, and territories. Explore a world populated with rich history, deep lore, and believable monsters.
• ARTISTS AND DESIGNERS- Whether you are an aspiring concept designer or a casual student of the human form this book is an invaluable resource for creating your own worlds and original animals that feel more like flesh and blood than fantasy.
What else can you get with it?
All pledges of over $50 will earn a 50 page bonus sketchbook assembling and explaining the conceptual design of the book's many creatures. Also included are the real-world origins and biological explanations for dozens of Kickstarter-exclusive concepts and mythical beasts.
All pledges of over $35 will earn special bookmarks of their choice featuring creatures from A Natural History of the Fantastic.
You will also earn a Kickstarter-exclusive 11"x 17" anatomical print of your choosing.
How will your donation help the project?
All donations collected for A Natural History of the Fantastic will be used to cover printing and basic production expenses. To make sure the book's quality isn't compromised I've decided to work with a local printing company that specializes in helping independent creators publish crowdfunded projects. These initial costs will ensure that the book's creation will be handled by experts, leading to a high-quality finished product. Any additional funds raised will be used to create bonus content and amazing stretch goals that improve the rewards for donors like you.
•15K- ADDITIONAL 20 PAGES ADDED TO BONUS SKETCHBOOK! (sketchbook PDF copy becomes free to all pledges of $5 or more!)

Who is behind all of this?
As a potential backer you are the biggest driving force behind the project. I am just one guy working on a shoestring budget. It is your enthusiasm that will directly determine the success of this book and any similar projects to come. My hope is that you will encourage others to get involved as well as suggesting any features, creatures, and special additions that you want to see!
The reaction to A Natural History of the Fantastic has been overwhelmingly positive so far, and I want to continue working directly with backers as passionate about fantasy worlds and experimental art as I am.
Together we have the chance to publish an art-book that is unlike anything currently in existence. I know that with your support we can create something truly unique.
Risks and challenges
The book is currently 80% complete with the remaining work consisting of text formatting, layout, and a handful of unfinished pieces. I intend to have most of this finished by the end of the funding period.
To help make sure this printing run works smoothly, I've decided to work with a local printing company that specializes in helping independent creators publish crowdfunded projects. With their resources and expertise I am confident that the quality of the book will not be compromised and that the many steps from concept to delivery will go smoothly.
Backers will be kept up to date on production goals and given regular previews as the book nears distribution.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
