The History of Flint and Feather
In the spring of 2014 Bob Murch read the novel The Orenda by Joseph Boyden. Since that time we have been working on this project. Bob began sculpting figures almost immediately and soon a company was formed to bring this and another project to life. We have already run the successful Star Crush Miniatures Kickstarter which brought our first project to life.
The Flint and Feather project has been a more extensive and time consuming process. In November 2014 Howard Whitehouse and Roderick Robertson produced the first draft of what would become the Flint and Feather rules. These rules have been playtested at conventions throughout the USA and in Canada over the past year. Meanwhile Bob Murch continued sculpting the figures, adding more to the project. If you wish to learn more about the Flint and Feather rules you can check out our blog at http://flintandfeatherplaytest.blogspot.ca/
As a company, Crucible Crush Productions, and each of our partners have personally invested money and effort into this project. The figures are ready to go, sculpted and mastered. We will be producing the production molds in May and production will begin in June. It is our goal to have these miniatures shipped before Historicon and have the whole range available online by July 15th. This is a very aggressive productions schedule. We also have several sets of new miniatures that will be included as Add-ons as Stretch Goals are met.
The rules are in the process of being play-tested and we wish to bring them to print by the spring of 2017. We are offering the miniatures now and running this Kickstarter to fund the publishing of the book, Wound Markers, Orenda Dice and Medicine Roll cards. These items are all in prototype and will be introduced throughout the Kickstarter as Add-ons. These items and the rulebook are planned to be shipped in February 2017. We need artwork for the rulebook, layout and printing to get this product to our supporters. Please support us and help us bring this exciting game system to life!
Flint and Feather is a 28mm, individual figure, skirmish game that allows players to accurately play out heroic raids in the Legendary Pre-Contact age of Great Lakes North American First Nations.
Some of the features of our game system are:
Individually Hand Sculpted 28mm Miniatures - We know this may be repeating ourselves but unlike some other games on Kickstarter you will not be receiving any duplicate figures in the basic starter Huron and Iroquois sets. Each set contains 14 individual posed and unique miniatures along with a plastic base for each. These figures are not plastic either, they come in unpainted metal. These are highly detailed, top end miniatures sculpted by Bob Murch who has decades of experience in sculpting.
Attack and Defense Card System - This unique combat system gives you the ability to choose the attack or defense maneuver of your key characters providing a critical decision point in the game during each and every melee you may fight.
Medicine Roll Initiative System - This creative initiative system allows interesting aspects of the Native American Indian mythology to be added into the game play and provides the game with more of a feel for the Legendary Pre-Contact period.
Orenda - this word is the Iroquoian name for the spiritual power inherent in people, animals and the environment. The rich Iroquoian mythology introduces aspects that allow us to creatively add magic, spells and spirit creatures to the game. Of course the wargame purist does not have to add these rules to the game if your inclination is for standard combat.
In Flint and Feather you play a Great Warrior who must raise a War Party to lead on a quest to perform great deeds. Raiding enemy camps, obtaining captives and capturing plunder all add to your honor as a Great Warrior and brings power and wealth to your tribe and Nation.Your Great Warrior can come from one of several First Nations that existed in the Legendary Pre-Contact era.
The Huron - Huron refers to the Wendat Confederation of indigenous people of North America. By the 15th century, the pre-contact Wendat settled in the area of the north shore of present-day Lake Ontario, before migrating to the Georgian Bay district on the shore of Lake Huron. The Wendat were a great trading nation and controlled crucial transit points vital to North American trade.
The Iroquois - The Iroquois or Haudenosaunee, are a historically powerful and important Northeast Native American confederacy comprising the Mohawk, Onondaga, Oneida, Cayuga and Seneca tribes. Iroquois power and influence extended widely into Canada, westward along the Great Lakes and down both sides of the Allegheny mountains into Virginia and Kentucky and into the Ohio Valley.
Alexander Mitchell, our lead game editor, and Vidal Bairos presents a turn of basic close combat game play in this video.
Risks and challenges
Much work lies ahead. We need to cast, package and ship over forty different miniatures. However, we are a manufacturing company and we both have experience producing miniatures. This is what we do and we know how to produce a great product. This is also not the first Kickstarter we have produced. We have successfully shipped the Star Crush Miniatures Kickstarter.
In our Star Crush Kickstarter we did not have the final three models sculpted and this held up our fulfillment date. However, Bob Murch sculpted some great starships and our supporters were happy with the result.
Late fulfillment of the miniatures will not be a problem for this Kickstarter as we have all the miniatures sculpted and we are preparing the production molds while this Kickstarter is running. We are well ahead of the curve. So join us and get some great looking figures at a lower introductory price.
We have set a date of March 2017 to get the rulebooks printed. This will be a new process for us and although publishing a book is a long process it is not a overly complicated procedure. We also have quotes for markers, cards and dice from reputable manufacturers. It is just a matter of getting the funds and getting the products to production. All these items are readily available in the marketplace.
We will take the paypal address of each supporter when we do the post KS survey. Our usual shipping fees are $10USD to the USA, $15USD to Europe and $20USD Overseas. You can expect to pay these prices if you are supporting us at the Basic Pledge Level. If you pledge for add-ons you can expect to pay up to double these amounts, and even more if you would like your package sent Air-mail. We will also offer a Historicon delivery to those that would like to take advantage of our attendance at that convention.
We are a small but experienced team, and we seek to be smart in our planning and expectations. Bob Murch has been sculpting figures since 1980 and successfully runs his own miniatures company. Most of the figures for this project are already sculpted or even in production and have been shipping now for six months. Lee Van Schaik has produced several projects on Kickstarter so he brings knowledge of the program to this project. In any case, we will be happy to refund pledges if for some totally unforeseen reason the game can't be delivered.
Our estimated delivery date for the miniatures is July 2016, and for the rulebook and game components is December 2016. Remember, these dates are at best only an estimate. Also, due to the logistics of international shipping, backers in different regions of the worldwill receive their rewards at different times.
By backing this Kickstarter you are pledging to help the development of this product. It may ship on time, it may not. If uncertainty is not acceptable to you, please do not back our project and wait for the figures and game productes to hit retail shelves. Thanks for your patience and understanding.
Finally, this project is introducing these figures to the market at a special Pre-order Kickstarter price. We expect them to be available for general sale in the near future, however, not at the great deal that this introductory price provides. This is a Kickstarter and it is designed to facilitate those that support us and believe in the product we are developing. We will however have these figures available for sale at shows we attend regardless of when we ship this Kickstarter product. If you wish to pick up the figures at a show we are attending that will be possible but the prices will not match this Kickstarter.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
