by Lana Braswell-Bloom, illustrated by Elena Sedova
Spaghetti Sam is a beautifully illustrated, engaging story of a boy (Sam) who doesn’t eat anything but Spaghetti. Sound crazy? It has many parallels for the author, a mother of a boy with Autism. Westley would eat only one thing for months at a time. Sam is a humorous reflection of an early period in Lana's journey with Westley.
She wrote Spaghetti Sam in the wee hours of a morning in 2006, years after West's palate and tolerance moved on to eat most anything. Jon was so taken by the story in rhyme that he set out to have it illustrated. Award winning artist Elena Sedova was commissioned to bring Sam to life. Story and art come together in a way so compelling, adults will read it more than once and kids will spend hours pondering the characters (like Tom the cat) and… hunting for the hidden “gems.”
It was written as a creative expression and illustrated as a gift, over six years ago. It’s time for children beyond our immediate family to enjoy the story and art of Spaghetti Sam. Early reader teachers have asked where to get it. Now, with your help and support, we can point teachers, parents, grandparents and friends to Kickstarter and bring Sam alive.
Spaghetti Sam is just plain fun and a smile is all but guaranteed. The message? Nothing deep here, maybe... try new things. It's real impact will be one of engaging an early reader to see words on a page come to life in a zany story of a boy and his favorite food group, spaghetti. If you are familiar with Shel Silverstein's poetry, you'll find a striking similarity in style. A quirky story with a humorous twist at the end.
Following are some excerpts of art and story.
Page 1: “There once was a boy they called Spaghetti Sam. He’d eat spaghetti, out of a jar, box or can.”
Page 2: "He’d stumble out of bed and the first thing in his head, were those noodles he ate, from a cup, bowl or plate. While the rest of the family had bacon, eggs and toast, Spaghetti Sam ate the thing he loved most."
Page 5: "Spaghetti Sam firmly stood on his ground, a superior dish could never be found. He'd sit on a chair and wrinkle his nose, proclaiming the cuisine curled all his toes."
Tom (the Cat with crazy expressions) is a curious bystander, following Sam through the adventure and his ultimate concession toward trying something new.... but, we won't spoil the ending and tell you what it is.
If successful this, our first Kickstater project, will fund printing and binding of a hard cover book and bring Sam to life. Our printer has been selected and is ready to fire up the presses. All we need is enough interest to make it happen.
Our goal is to ultimately get Sam in front of as many early readers as possible, putting smiles on faces of children and parents alike. The more the better. If we exceed our goal, it means more books to donate and more smiles will abound!
Backing is simple... click on the BACK THIS PROJECT button at the top. This directs you to an Amazon payment page. It's all very secure and completely legitimate Kickstarter has funded over $215 million in projects. Kewl!
Thank you for considering this project!
How Kickstarter Works
For those unframiliar, Kickstarter is a novel, Internet spawned source of seed captial referred to as "crowd funding." Backers interested in a creative concept invest in a project as a community, getting rewards for different levels of investment and the satisfaction of helping bring a creative idea to market. Projects are funded all or nothing. So, if the minimum threshold isn't met, your credit card isn't charged and the project isn't funded.
That would be very sad for Sam, to live the rest of his life as a single prototype in a drawer... forever. So sad. For Sam's sake, help us reach the minimum.
We Need Your Help!
Backers are instrumental in two ways, money and connections... just like the Menlo Park venture firms. Don't stop with Backing, please use your social network and let your friends, family and teachers know about Sam. The "viral" effect of spreading the word is really important! Don't "send all" however, be selective and consider the project and our market. Even if you don't choose to be a Backer, please help spread the word. The clock is ticking... and Sam doesn't want to live in a dark drawer forever.
Thanks for your support!
