About this project
Picture this: Jesus turning water...into butts. That illustration is called Big Ass Miracle, and it was inspired, along with the rest of Big Ass Rainbow, by a phrase that you hear every day.
Ever hear someone say “whoa that’s a big ass volcano” or “hey check out that big ass kaleidoscope?” I've always found it fun to interpret those phrases literally, as in "big ass-volcano," or "big ass-kaleidoscope." But how MONUMENTALLY AWESOME would it be to have artists illustrate these phrases? What would a big ass-volcano look like? How about a big ass-kaleidoscope? I think you get the idea.
The final Big Ass Rainbow (i'll explain why I said "final' in a minute) will consist of 30 Big Ass Illustrations by 30 different artists. Each illustration is inspired by a big ass phrase, such as Big Ass Fairy Tale, Big Ass Boy Band, and Big Ass Cyborg Uprising. I designed these illustration concepts so that each would offer a unique glimpse into this bottom-heavy universe. You will find that butts play a different role in each piece. There are mighty heroes, warring nations, nightmarish monsters, and true love. There will be terror and whimsy, swords and cyborgs, beauty and chaos. And puns. So many puns.
Why I'm doing this Kickstarter
Most of these illustrations don't exist yet. The money from Kickstarter will allow me to pay the artists for these illustrations, compensating them for their hard work.
(super duper important part --->) Now, the final book will have 30 illustrations, but I thought it would be a little unrealistic to try and raise enough money to pay 30 artists for 30 illustrations. That adds up fast. With that in mind, I came up with a realistic project with a realistic goal.
- My Kickstarter goal enables me to pay for 10 illustrations.
- I will then use these 10 illustrations to create a mini-book - an abbreviated Big Ass Rainbow.
- Then I'll shop that mini-book around to publishers.
If a publisher is interested, I will commission the remaining 20 illustrations. If not, I will self-publish the mini-book.
Right now I have 10 artists signed on for the mini-book, plus a cover artist, all ready to complete their illustrations as soon as this Kickstarter is successful. As you can see, some of these artists were generous enough to create sketches, mock-ups, and even start the final illustration just for the purpose of this Kickstarter, without the guarantee of payment, and for that I'm very grateful. For example, check out Diego Perez's sketch for Big Ass Cyborg Uprising:
Now I'd like to introduce the artists:
and cover artist Daryl Alexsy
If the Kickstarter is successful, here's what happens on my end. The moment we hit the goal, the artists begin illustrating. They have a one month deadline. Meanwhile, I'll be finalizing the mini-book design and organizing backer rewards. Once the illustrations are finished I'll integrate them into the book design, make sure it's perfect, then send the book to the printer. I've designed books and optimized them for printers before so things should go smoothly.
Time check: this puts us at a little over a month.
While I'm waiting for the mini-books to be printed, I'll be formatting the iPad ebook and PDF. Again, I've done this before so it should be relatively simple. Once I get the printed mini-books, I'll start packaging and mailing out the rewards.
Time check: 1.5 months.
Then I'll start mailing the mini-book to publishers.
So to sum up, a successful Kickstarter will allow me to:
- Commission 10 illustrations from these 10 artists.
- Create a mini-book which will go to publishers and Kickstarter backers.
- Help Big Ass Rainbow get published.
I'm about to briefly discuss stretch goals, just because I feel I should be prepared for any and all possibilities. But these stretch goals are bonus icing on a bonus cake. If I can just meet my regular goal and successfully make the mini-book, I'll be as happy as a Big Ass Clam.
Stretch Goal 1: $4,500K
The more money I raise, the more illustrations I can commission! If I somehow raise $4,500K, I can pay 20 artists for 20 illustrations. This means a bigger, better mini-book! And if I raise even more...
Stretch Goal 2: $7K
If I raise $7K I can pay all 30 illustrators for all 30 illustrations.! That means that all the rewards that include the mini-book will be changed to include the complete book! You get more Big Ass Illustrations, potential publishers get more Big Ass Illustrations, and we're one step closer to hitting a store near you.
Risks and challenges
Designing a book is always challenging, but I have design experience which I gained from self-publishing my previous illustrated book, Is This Acid In My Applesauce? Big Ass Rainbow will be much simpler to design and format than that book, and I've already created the basic design template. But as always, you can't plan something perfectly, and I expect I'll have to tinker with the layout to get it just right.
The goal of this Kickstarter is to help me create a mini-book of Big Ass Rainbow, and I don't foresee the mini-book being too much of a challenge to make. However, what comes after will be more difficult. I want to send this mini-book to publishers. I'm continuously researching publishers and putting together a big list of contacts, and I will tirelessly advertise my book to them, but I can't be certain of the outcome.
If I can't get published, I will self-publish the mini-book. Self-publishing is always a challenge, but again, I have experience and am confident in my abilities. It will happen. You just bet your butt.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
