Returning to our roots as a print publication, this eclectic anthology of works by Asian / Canadian writers will celebrate Ricepaper Magazine's first year as a digital magazine.

20 years ago, the Asian Canadian Writers' Workshop started publishing Ricepaper: the only Canadian literary magazine for both emerging and established Asian writers and artists. What started as a simple newsletter went on to showcase the works of prolific creative individuals such as Joy Kogawa, Wayson Choy, David Suzuki, Rita Wong, and even Madeleine Thien, the 2016 Giller Prize winner for her novel Do Not Say We Have Nothing.

When Ricepaper first began, its content was mainly focused on the experience of marginalized Asian communities in Canada. We still publish with this mandate, but as time progressed, we evolved along with our readership to become a forum for creative works, interviews, profiles and reviews of more contemporary Asian communities.

In 2016, we transitioned to a completely digital magazine. We expanded the breadth of our content to include work from Asian writers both in Canada and abroad.

“It's foolhardy to think that a story ends”
― Madeleine Thien, Do Not Say We Have Nothing

Within the last year, we gained no shortage of content and would now like to compile some of the most memorable pieces into a beautifully designed anthology.

The digital landscape has opened up many doors for many publications, but there isn’t something quite like the satisfaction, awe, and excitement of flipping through physical pages to immerse yourself in worlds different from your own. There's no doubt that if you've come upon this page, we likely share an appreciation for print.

Why Currents?

Having expanded to what we are today, Ricepaper’s content has never been more multifaceted. And as we grow more aware of our histories and present circumstances, so has our content grown in relevance.

The journalistic perspectives we publish, artwork we showcase, and poetry and fiction we provide our readers with is all the work from writers of diverse backgrounds. And each one of them contributes to a distinct experience of Asian identity.

Though we all may be scattered across continents, the content Ricepaper publishes reminds how we are all connected, that the same threads run through all of our lives; that no matter where you are reading from, you can find perspectives like your own.

Our Audience

  • Readers interested in content from Asian writers, poets, and artists
  • Those in search of diverse, multicultural content
  • Current readers of the Ricepaper website
  • And, if you've read this far already, then you too! :)

“And if you decide not to read anymore, hey, no problem, because you're not the one I was waiting for anyway. But if you decide to read on, then guess what? You're my kind of time being and together we'll make magic!”
― Ruth Ozeki, A Tale for the Time Being

Why is Currents significant?

We're situated in a very interesting time in Canadian publishing, where there is a need (and want) for more diverse, multicultural content. The world isn't full of cookie-cutter individuals, but of people who come from a plethora of racial backgrounds.

If you chip in and help make Currents a real, tangible book then it's one step towards more inclusive, fairly representative publishing.

Book Launch

The launch of the Currents anthology will be on Friday, September 22, 2017. It will be held at Thai Town (88 W Pender St, Vancouver, BC) from 6:30PM to 8:30PM. We encourage local pledgers to attend and pick up their copy of the book then.

If you chose to pick up the book and found yourself unable to attend the event, we will have your reward option shipped to you.

We will approach this on a first come, first served basis.

$1000: Printing the anthology

$1000: Compensation for our published contributors ($40 per submission)

$1000: For packaging, shipping and cover prints

Last year, when the publication moved to its digital platform, Ricepaper needed a new team to guide it. Allan Cho, Ricepaper's Executive Editor, brought us all on board. It started with 9 members last year and has grown to be 18-strong now. Most of us are based in Vancouver, BC, with some in other parts of Canada, Stanford and South Korea.

With our different backgrounds and skills, we've come to form a diverse team. We are all volunteers and we are all dedicated to Ricepaper's mission of delivering Asian and Asian Canadian literature, stories, and art.

Get to know us better by visiting our masthead page.

$3500: If you follow our Instagram, you'll see a ton of art that's been paired with our website's published writing. With a raise in our budget, we could get full colour prints of artworks of your choice and include them in any book bundle.

$4000: By doubling our printing budget, we could print twice as many anthologies!

Risks and challenges

The main thing about being a digital magazine is that all of Ricepaper's content is accessible online. However, the anthology's online content will be replaced by excerpts, with full text only available in print. Furthermore, the value of this anthology comes in how its content has been carefully selected and laid out for our readers' pleasure.

Ricepaper is also a small publication. We function in a niche market that further publishes niche content. But it's the content that matters and through it we are raising awareness of the kinds of experiences that are shared amongst the Asian diaspora. If through the power of reading we can reach out and hold someone's hand through a challenging time that we can relate to, we will find this work worthwhile and soldier on.

The team is 100% made up of volunteers. And we 100% believe in the work and purpose of Ricepaper.
