Over a year ago we started looking at beginning a High-Seas Adventure D&D campaign. However, we wanted to kick it up a notch (or five).
So, we began looking for a great set of 3d Dungeon tiles to help bring the adventures to life for our players. We wanted something that was customizable, beautiful to look at, and was playable terrain. We also didn't want to spend $100 per ship. We realized that customizable didn’t really exist- we had to *choose* if we wanted beauty, or a slim amount of customization. Not to mention that the costs were extreme per ship.. We couldn’t put together a fleet of different ships if we wanted to without breaking the bank.
Being an Indy designer- Chris decided to start working on something better, and finally- after seeing friends and family reactions to the initial prototype- ShipWorks began becoming a reality.
Shipworks is modular. What this means is that from the hull to the masts and everywhere in between- you have the freedom to design and print the sailing ship that you want. Not just another generic template, but your minds eye brought to life.
ShipWorks is also fully usable terrain- to scale with miniatures common to some of the oldest and greatest table top roleplaying games. Your miniatures can traverse the rigging shrouds and masts, climb ladders and stairs, and explore above or even below decks.
Even our yard-arms are functional terrain- 25mm miniatures bases slide in with ease, and stay there- even when turned upside down!
With ShipWorks you get to choose:
The length of your ship.
Adjust the width of the ship.
Your prows appearance, and even the figurehead that adorns it!
Add more (or less) masts and their length! No messy shaping of wood dowels (unless you’re into that). Add a crows nest or viewing platform.
A host of customizations to change your hull. From the number of weapons ports to fight off enemies, to creature comforts like windows for passenger cabins. Even sleek flat hull panels for showing off your more merchant elite!
How you want your sails, from classic square to sharp looking lateen triangles. If you change your mind- change them on the fly!
Your stern-castle and fore-castle (or have neither Captain!)
Raise sections of deck to create endless different ship profiles with short hull walls
Your decking is even customizable, Do you want benches for emergency rowers or prisoners? Grating for cargo hold access? Hatches to go above or below deck? Gridded or non?
How you want your bowsprit’s length. Be it short, medium or long
To add accessories to your walls. Is your ship decked out with hammocks for sailors, coils of rope, or shelves of rum?
Choose the style of rails for your ship- solid or balusters, shields or no. Add some lanterns or swivel guns if you’d like (they slide right on)
Walls and doors below decks
- Decide between different stern-castle ‘shrouds’ (the wall at the back of the ship)
It’s a lot of choices- you could build a true armada of ships with the core set alone- and yet not two would be completely identical. Unless you choose to make it so, Captain.
With OpenLOCK compatibility- you will also be able to change parts of the ships you print as your group upgrades or damages their ships- or to bring new foes to the fray without the hassle of printing an entire new vessel from the ground up.
We are a BSD Commercially OpenLOCK licensed developer – and with your help, will be bringing ShipWorks to OpenLOCK compatibility.
This gives you, the Game Masters, collectors and players out there the ability to have ShipWorks interact with and connect to countless 3d tile sets.
The Stretch Goals and Add-Ons:
We have a LOT planned for ShipWorks. Depending on how the Kickstarter progresses, you’ll get to see our journey unfold. From extra parts to customize your ship, to further weaponry and accessories to help make them feel more alive.
We will have some great add-on scenery options available as the Kickstarter progresses. Gentle shores with curving sands and lapping waves, to Island Adventure kits to help bring exploring unknown islands to life. Diving bells, cranes and strange bathysphere based creations have been seen.
We also plan to have unlockable ships as add-ons (or included in the Quartermaster pledge and above) to further change the style to match many classic ship designs. We have designs for many classics, Trireme’s to Asian Junks and Yawls are planned to name a few.
We’ve also heard rumors of fearsome foes of legend. The mighty Leviathan, and a great turtle larger than a ship have been spotted!- Even necromantic ships of bone as well as ships risen from ages under the waves and more- things to drive the hardest sea dog to tremors of fear! Not to mention kraken spotted in far out waters.
I hear from a brave sailor that there’s even been sightings of airships out there…
But September is a long way away….
We’ll be opening a backer access portal not long after the dust of the Kickstarter settles, where all backers will have access to files after they become converted to OpenLOCK and quality tested. You won’t need to wait until September for all of the files, and we’ll be regularly posting updates as designs are finalized, as well as when new parts are up for download.

Breakdown of what's in the Core Ship:
Risks and challenges
This is my first Kickstarter- yet the ‘bones’ of the ship are already complete, aside from the conversion to being OpenLOCK compatible. We have been selling custom miniatures online for a year now- and have strong expectations for quality. Our designs are all in-house, and will be print tested before release. There is always the risk of delays due to printer malfunction for testing parts, or illness interfering with modeling- however I am confident that the goal date will make it more than adequate for compensating for any issuesLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
