Trail of the Gods Interpretive Walk

Walk the new-in-2015 Trail of the Gods, which starts in Stevenson and uses a little-driven part of the old Evergreen Highway as it curves around a Columbia tributary. Then it passes the hidden grave of Norman Palmer, killed in the nearby Cascades Massacre of 1856 before crossing the spectacular Bridge of the Gods at the point where the Columbia was once choked off by a massive landslide. Lunch in Cascade Locks above the historic stone locks themselves, at Thunder Island Brewing (no host) and return: 7 miles round trip on flat ground. Four hours, starting and ending at the Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center Museum, a great place to spend an hour after the tour. Sign up and create a group of up to 12 people, and we'll schedule a mutually agreeable date in 2016.

Biking the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail

One of my favorite things to do in the gorge. Start under the Bridge of the Gods, where we'll talk about the great Bonneville Landslide, and then bike west. We'll cross many century-old scenic bridges, take a 1.8-mile round trip walk to Wahclella Falls (if everyone brings their bike locks), visit the first campground created by the U.S. Forest Service and a seldom-visited and spectacular WPA-era overlook at Eagle Creek, be amazed at the views above the Toothrock Tunnel, and cruise into Bonneville Dam, a National Historic Landmark, for a look at Herman the Sturgeon and the fish-rearing ponds, and a restroom stop. From there we'll either turn around or continue to McCord Creek, the end of the no-car section of the Historic Highway. We'll bike back to Cascade Locks and have a meal at Brigham Fish Market, the first brick-and-mortar Native-American owned seafood shop in the gorge. Best smoked salmon chowder ever. Meals are no host.

Expect four to six hours with stops (not including your travel time to get there). The trail is paved and rolling, with one segment where we have to roll/carry our bikes up a set of stairs.

    A Day in The Dalles

History clings to every surface in The Dalles like lichen to rock. Walk 5 miles through national historic districts of old homes, a mill creek, Oregon's second mission, an Art Deco high school, an oak-shaded pioneer cemetery and a downtown that houses a mint built to stamp gold coins from Oregon's short lived gold rush. Lunch downtown, then drive east along the Columbia, through lands occupied for 10,000 years, and on to the mouth of the Deschutes River. We'll explore around a bit then drive back to The Dalles on incredibly beautiful gravel roads that follow the path of Oregon Trail pioneers. Views from the cliffs are superb. Back in The Dalles, we'll stop at a flour mill turned winery before driving back to Portland (or you could make arrangements to spend the night).

Sign up and create a group of up to 10 friends. This trip happens in April, when wildflowers are fantastic and days aren't yet very hot. About 12 hours total, including driving time. The walk entails walking up hill on sidewalks and streets, plus some stairs. We'll carpool from Portland (85 miles one way). All meals are no host.
