About

"If it can be written, or thought, it can be filmed.” – Stanley Kubrick

That’s what Ark Film did with a new genre in the Newfoundland film canon last year. A labor of love, “New Woman”, finished principle photography on December 30, 2017. It’s Kickstarter campaign launched on April 10th, 2018, with a goal of $2700 to begin the extensive post-production phase.

SYNOPSIS

The gothic romance surrounds the story of two immigrants in the heart of Newfoundland and Labrador – a chance encounter between a pickpocket and a well-to-do woman. The dark tale of seduction is set four years before the Great Fire of 1892. It’s a stylized gothic romance that will curdle your blood and ignite the senses.

Noah collaborated with published writer C.H. Newell to create the story in 2015. In 2016, Noah began hunting for locations after casting the lead, Rhiannon Morgan. 2017 saw heavy preparation culminating in principle photography, which finished up on December 30th, 2017.

ARK FILM

Ark Film previously launched an Indiegogo campaign to fund the costs of shooting the film, but were unsuccessful in raising anywhere near the required amount. Period pieces are far more financially taxing than a film set near present day. Determined to make the film a reality, Benjamin Noah, producer, director and founder of Ark Film, took a risk that many artists and creators have made before – he invested all of his own money into the project.

Noah cut his teeth in the local film and television industry before creating a collective, Ark Film in 2015. The young company’s opening track record speaks for itself. Sundays, a short film/music video hybrid blending Fantasy/Science Fiction and Adventure shot solely in the wilderness and incorporating all 4 seasons in Newfoundland, made it to 50 film festivals locally, nationally, and internationally. It won awards at Broken Knuckle Film Festival in New York City along with two other wins in the USA, Canada Shorts, Canada International Film Festival, Near Nazareth Film Festival (Israel), Topshorts and was nominated for Best International Music Video at the world renowned Leeds International Film Festival. It also screened at Atlantic Film Festival, FilmQuest (USA), Post Mortem (Mexico) just to name a few. Sundays was funded by Noah’s bartending tips.

New Woman is a much more ambitious project than the last, with the goal of transporting the viewer into the gothic world of the late 19th century Newfoundland through a progression of atmosphere and emotion. Their hope is that by raising enough funds through their Kickstarter campaign for post-production, New Woman will reach some of the top festivals in the world and gain international recognition. The final touches of this Herculean independent film effort is the next step in the advancement of his collective company, a means of creative expression for their work family, and a plunge into a rich and compelling new genre for the Newfoundland film industry. Following the release of New Woman, Ark Film plans to produce a short action movie entitled “Erudition”, a proof of concept for their first feature length film, “The Kidnapping”. It’s a proximal future film noir.. It is a story Noah began work on in Asia in 2012, which lead him to pursue filmmaking at 25 years of age.

Risks and challenges

Ark Film previously launched an Indiegogo campaign to fund the costs of shooting the film, but were unsuccessful in raising anywhere near the required amount. Period pieces are far more financially taxing than a film set near present day. Determined to make the film a reality, Benjamin Noah, producer, director and founder of Ark Film, took a risk that many artists and creators have made before – he invested all of his own money into the project.

Given that principal photography is complete, the risks involved are few and far between – New Woman is in the final stretch!
