About

Not So Dry Bones

Coming out of a disbanded 3D printing company in Stillwater, OK, we have a running start; but now, we need your help.

As just a couple of students from Oklahoma State with a passion for learning, we began trying to find a niche market that we could tap into that benefited students. In talks with the OSU veterinary department, they were very excited to start using the exact type of technology that we had. Come to find out, the university only had two skeletons for the entire veterinary school, a department that is setting records for attendance each year. So,we began designing and printing a canine skeleton for the department, as a grant. Each bone, printed at 1/3 scale, is made out of 100% recyclable plastic, which is skillfully crafted by our team; also, each joint is linked by magnets, giving the skeleton a full range of motion.

Printing these skeletons, we've dedicated production to FormLabs' Form1+ series printers, which uses stereolithography technology, "the industry standard in delivering beautiful, functional parts that plastic extrusion printers just can't match." The printer works by using a high precision optical system, which directs a laser across a tank of liquid resin, solidifying layers as thin as 25 microns. With the software, exceptionally intuitive, and the hardware, extremely accurate, it makes these the perfect printers for us.

Our company used this technology, but due to differences, we've left along with our research. However, we share the same philosophy with the company we've left. We want to help students, the students who are already being bled dry by the price of course materials. We mention this because, after being funded, we plan on mass producing, which should drop our prices substantially. In short, we're looking to take our canine skeletons from a prototype, to a mass-produced product for students and educators alike with this new company.

This is where you come in...

We have all of the know-how, experience, and research to begin our project. However, we have none of the capital.

We need-

- Form1+ printers and replacement parts

- FormLabs cast mold supplies

- A high quality 3D scanner

- $10,000 manufacturing retainer

Skeleton 1.0

This is the skeleton that we used for our grant. Although every single bone was printed and placed in the right fashion, we saw that the spine sloped in an unnatural way. Also, attaching each rib to the vertebrae and sternum seemed tedious, at least, when compared to putting the rest of the skeleton together. These were problems that we needed to resolve before getting model 1.1 to you.

Skeleton 1.1

Correcting the spine, we separated and fused the vertebrae into three segments (cervical, thoracic, and lumbar). Fixing the ribs, we fused each side of the rib cage together so it could attach to both the sternum and the vertebrae easier. Fusing these sections together has not only improved the posture and the ease of putting the skeleton together: the way we've grouped these vertebrae and bone together makes them easier to memorize, which makes for a better study material. If you pledge enough, you will be receiving this model, pre-mass production and before anyone else.

The Future

After we have a streamlined manufacturing process, we see ourselves moving on, designing and creating other anatomically correct skeletons such as feline, equine, and bovine for anyone to have access to.

Risks and challenges

We've been doing this for about a year and we've gone through some tough times, but we've gained a lot of experience with our time. 3D printing, however impressive, is still a very new and emerging market. Taking care of a printer is common knowledge. However, performing maintenance and knowing how to deal with errors is a big part of maintaining a proper-running printer, and such a thing only comes with experience.

Once production ramps up, we will begin pursuing institutions with veterinary departments. Necessary steps will be taken in order to reach out to deans, department heads, and student union stores to authorize sales at their universities. An obvious risk here would be rejection. But, because our bones are a practical resource that students can memorize the canine anatomy with, and because its projected to sell at over 100% cheaper than an actual skeleton would, we are very confident about our sales abilities.
