Let's face it... agreeing on a movie to watch is harder than Chinese Algebra.
My name is Luis, and I introduce to you: Squadflick.
So... what is Squadflick?
Squadflick is a mobile app that helps groups and couples find a movie to watch through group voting in just seconds.
OK, Mr. Movie Guy... why do I need this app?
Let me paint a familiar scene for you.
Your friends are over at your house for a movie night.
The gluten-free pizza is on the way. The popcorn is popping in the microwave. Everyone's sitting in front of the TV, ready.
Moments later, some poor soul asks a variation of the million dollar question:
A simple question on the surface, but yet sometimes very difficult to answer.
This question leads to some very long minutes of scrolling, debating and discarding movies, over and over again...
If you have ever...
- Spent dozens of minutes trying to find something to watch with others...
- Engaged in endless debate about what genre(s) to pick for that night...
- Mumbled "I already saw that" more times than you can count, causing your friends to want to physically hurt you...
Squadflick can help.
But why is picking a movie to watch with others so hard sometimes?
I thought you'd never ask, young grasshopper.
My research has included in-person interviews, online surveys and trapping people in rooms and forcing them to answer questions.
Below are the results.
All of the above lead to minutes wasted and some very irritated movie-lovers...
Of course, there had to be a better way to pick a movie. Except, there wasn't.
So I created it.
How does Squadflick work?
Squadflick helps groups and couples agree on a movie to watch in 3 simple steps.
An organizer creates the movie night by selecting who they are watching a movie with.
* With Solo Mode, you'll be able to find a movie to watch by yourself.
Everyone joins the movie night by picking up to 2 genres they'd like to watch.
Then, through magic, Squadflick finds 10 great films based on everyone's genre votes.
Everyone votes yes/no on these 10 movies by swiping, as shown below.
After voting, if a single movie won... voila! You now have something to watch.
In the case of a tie, you can even let Squadflick pick a movie for you. Also, you can start another movie night altogether for more awesome suggestions.
No more endless scrolling.
No more looking at dozens of top 10 lists.
No more time wasted.
Squadflick makes picking a movie with others fun and easy.
OK, now you have my attention... but how does Squadflick help in picking a movie?
Take a seat, my young Padawan. I'll explain everything.
Squadflick solves the problems inherent to movie nights in several ways:
Plus, it turns out it's actually really fun to swipe on movies with friends.
With Squadflick, filmxiety is a thing of the past.
Does it work?
It turns out this crazy idea for an app does actually help in finding a movie quicker!
I hosted a movie night with 2 of my friends to test the prototype for the first time (shout out to Mario and Fausto).
Gattaca ended up winning, since all 3 of us voted yes for it.
That was a GREAT film nobody had seen and which everyone truly enjoyed. This is when I knew I was onto something here.
And it took us a less than a minute to vote and decide on Gattaca.
How YOU doin'?
That was a huge difference to previous movie nights, where I've taken up to 20 minutes to pick a movie with the same 2 friends.
Over time, I've repeated the process with several groups and have had people test it out on their own movie nights, with similar results.
What are you going to use the money for?
My #1 goal is to get the app in the hands of those who want it! For this reason, I am not raising money to do any marketing/ads.
Instead, every single cent raised will go towards the development of the app:
- iOS: finish the current prototype and get it into the App Store by spring 2019.
- Android: build the Android app and get it on the Google Play Store by summer 2019.
- Other tech: the behind-the-scenes technology that makes it all work.
As you might know, creating a great app takes a ton of work!
Raising the funds will allow me to get help in areas I need it the most, including things such as user experience, graphics, front-end and back-end Android implementation, app testing, among others.
With your support, we can get it done!
As you saw in the video, there's a lot of cool stuff coming your way!
- iOS App: the iOS prototype is fully functioning! After a bit more refining, it'll be ready for download on the App Store.
- Android App: currently in the planning phase, the Android version will be released a couple of months after the iOS version.
- Windows Phone App: nope.
- Solo Mode: by yourself? We'll have a Solo Mode so you can find movies to watch by yourself in a fun way as well (friends not included).
- Curated Movie Lists: continuously-published, cool and interesting lists of movies will be available to pick movies from, also through voting (e.g. Oscar-nominated movies, movies set in apocalyptic dystopias, romantic comedies that don't suck, etc.).
- New Filters: filtering only by genre is so 1995. Cool new filters, including movie moods, sub-genres, themes, among others, are in the works.
- Streaming Services Integration: if your squad wants to watch something specifically on Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc., you will be able to filter by streaming service.
Movie nights will never be the same again.

Risks and challenges
Because my main goal is getting Squadflick into the hands of all indecisive movie fans ASAP, we are focusing 100% of our efforts into making this happen for both iOS and Android.
As with any software project, there are common inherent risks in the development of Squadflick.
- App/Play Store Approval
Squadflick has been checked by the Apple App Store team already and it adheres to all the guidelines, so no problems are anticipated here. The Android version is at the end of the planning phase and thus it hasn't been submitted to the Google Play Store. Ultimately, we do not control the approval process for these app stores and a delay here is always possible. We will remain vigilant and update the app according to any requirements we are asked to comply with ASAP.
No software is ever developed without problems initially. That said, I am confident in the robustness of the iOS prototype, as it has been tested in dozens of movie nights already. This design will be replicated and thoroughly tested for the Android version. As a team of beta testers is built, I will ensure that the versions for both iOS and Android are fully functional, and will remain vigilant to make any updates as necessary.
Regardless of challenges and obstacles, I am committed to making Squadflick available for movie nights all over the world. You can count on this.
