About this project
It was the soul of a nation, India's saints, kriya yoga masters, family and friends that all supported young Mukunda in becoming Yogananda, great saint and spiritual dynamo who changed the world.
This documentary project is a service we have been inspired to render to those interested in learning more about the man who brought yoga to the West, to the memory of Paramahansa Yogananda, his lineage of kriya yoga gurus, to spiritual seekers, and to God. It is an independent production, not affiliated with any organization.
- to share our discoveries and insights into details of Yogananda's life story, his personality and the spiritual influences he benefited from, as well as details of the lives of kriya yoga masters: Babaji, Lahiri Mahasaya and Swami Sri Yukteswar to reveal who they really were, and their paths to awakening.
- to reveal Paramahansa Yogananda as a human being who became a great saint, encouraging us to be spiritually enlightened in this incarnation by following his example and guidance, and to inspire Truth-seekers through his edifying life and message.
- to introduce the principles and power of kriya yoga.
- to present inspiring, beautiful images of the spiritually charged sacred places where these spiritual masters lived, so those who are not able to make this journey can be blessed with a vivid, abiding feeling of having been there.
Ron is a master of visual communication as well as a gifted writer. He has worked as an award winning photographer, illustrator, graphic designer and filmmaker. In 1970 Ron met his guru, friend and mentor, and was initiated in kriya yoga by Roy Eugene Davis, direct disciple of Paramahansa Yogananda. Since 1975 Ron has also been writing, lecturing and offering seminars on creative living, meditation and kriya yoga.
Hélène has a great eye for composition and detail. Her skill at research, organizing and logistical support made this production possible. Her participation in editing and visual storytelling brings an added dimension and extra richness to a compelling tale. A long time member of Self-Realization Fellowship, founded by Paramahansa Yogananda, and kriya yoga practitioner, Hélène lived in India for two years. She has served at several SRF ashrams and centers in different countries including India, at his Yogoda Satsanga Society.
We have the great blessing of two musicians who love Paramahansa Yogananda, that are contributing original compositions for our project. Their music will be featured on the movie soundtrack CD.
Todd Bush began playing Sitar in his early teens with lessons from Hasu Patel and was trained in Classical Indian Music. He enjoys blending western styles with Indian raga forms in his new creations. On a recent trip to Varanasi he purchased another beautiful instrument which he lovingly calls "Bablu." His masterful composition "Yogananda's India" is a beautiful addition to our documentary.
Swami Nirvanananda from Italy travels the world playing devotional music and leading chanting and kirtan. The proceeds from his offerings go to support Father Marian's school for the children of lepers in Puri, India.
The path so far
We spent an intense month in October 2015 visiting and shooting the locations relevant to the early life of Paramahansa Yogananda, his heroes and enlightened teachers. Our story line was developed after months of research into the intimate stories he related, and those by his closest friends and family. More than twelve hours of video clips and 3000 still photos have been cataloged with keywords and prepared for editing. We have invested more than $15,000 of our own funds in bringing our movie to this point and now we need support to complete our project.
What lies ahead
We need to accomplish the following in order to finish the movie:
- Additional Filming
- Post Production
- Video Editing
- Music/Sound Editing
- Graphic Design for Maps and Graphics
- Marketing and Promotion
11" x 17" Movie Poster - Printed on heavy cover stock.
Exclusive: Enamel pin, pendant, earrings - Our creation of a symbol representing the spiritual eye as described by Paramahansa Yogananda. This pin is only available to our special backers.
8" x 10" Only Love Can Tell His Story Print.
$35,000 - Creating closed captioning (for hearing impaired) for the English version, and narration tracks along with closed captions in French, Spanish, German, Italian and Hindi - to be completed and released following the initial movie release. We will not want to wait for the additional recording and editing before allowing our backers to enjoy the movie. We do want to make it available to a larger worldwide audience, and additional funding will allow us to accomplish this goal sooner.
$50,000 - Coffee table picture book with photos and stories about the places and lives of the kriya yoga masters (to be completed and released after the movie). We have more than 3000 images from our journey through India, and so many stories that we will not have time to tell in the documentary. This book will be a treasure for those who want to have more intimate knowledge of the lives of these remarkable saints.
Risks and challenges
We realize the responsibility that goes into making a documentary worthy of the life and memory of Paramahansa Yogananda. We take great pride in our work and realize that without the help and support of friends, and those who love this great saint, our project would not be possible.
This is our first time putting together a full length feature documentary. It is a huge undertaking and we are confident that we can deliver you a superb final product. Since we began planning our pilgrimage journey in July of 2015 we have remained deeply immersed in this project. We understand that there may be some setbacks that we haven't anticipated and if anything happens to slow down our progress, we will be 100% transparent with you and constantly keep you updated.
Thanks again for your support, this would not be possible without each and every one of you. This documentary and its message is something that we can't wait to share with you and others all over the world. It promises to serve as an inspiration for many, far into the future.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
