I love this illustration because of the colors and fun I had with the two, three and then four 'eyes' I designed in to drawing.

The Story
Horrible Horribles is an illustrated poem about a young boy who has nightmares about creatures like space aliens, weird monsters and two-headed dogs. The boy is frightened but he doesn't have to worry because as the poem says, 'Daddy is near'.

The Poem
Tom Maggi wrote Horrible Horribles from his experiences of being a single father of two boys and one girl.  After a long night of calming one of his kids down after having a nightmare, he sat down and composed the poem to read to the kids when they were scared. And by all accounts, it was very effective. The kids were less scared of monsters and the felt safe knowing their would be there to protect them no matter what.

Sadly, the author Tom Maggi passed away recently. He was talented in many ways and very proud of his kids. I wish he could have seen this project to it's end.

My Plan
My project is creating an eBook version of Horrible Horribles. Originally, Horrible Horribles was printed in black and white then in color with all new art about seven years ago. Because of it's simple message and bold colorful illustrations, I believe that Horrible Horribles would make a great eBook for kids 5 yrs. old and up.

I'm going to work with PublishGreen, a division of Mill City Press for the conversion to an eBook. PublishGreen will also be handling the distribution and copyright registration. Once the eBook is completed, they will then send Horrible Horribles to be reviewed through their digital Book Review Reviewer Program to approximately 1500 reviewers.

The Artwork
I work 100% digital using Corel Painter and Adobe Photoshop on a Mac Mini and a Wacom tablet. As you can see in the samples, the work is very colorful and whimsical even in the 'giant bugs attack in the night'. I didn't want to scare the kids so I drew the characters in non-threatening poses. Note that the ant is ready to pounce but the other two are more interested in the toy bee in the toy box. The real bee seems very shocked! The ant looks very irritated by the bee and grasshopper. You can almost hear him say, 'Hey, what are you two doing now? Put that down!'

Added Feature!
Another fun part of the art is that I added details from elsewhere in the story to many of the pages.  On one of the pages, there's a circus where a daredevil mouse is being shot out of a cannon. And then if you look closely on the page with the centipedes under a tree, in the background, you can just make out the circus tent and something being shot out of a cannon. That would be the brave brave mouse. The kids I've showed this to, love searching for these things!  These 'in jokes' are not part of the poem but add another level of fun to Horrible Horribles.

When I'm out at art fairs, kids will read though the book and then go back again and again looking at the art which is very gratifying as an illustrator.

Risks and challenges

Horrible Horribles is a full page picture book so the only option is to make it into a fixed layout ebook. These types of ebooks are only sold in the Apple iBookstore and viewed only on iPads so, the market isn't as large as I would like but, iBookstore is the 2nd biggest online eBook store and as we all know, the iPad is insanely popular so, while the ebook won't be listed in other online book stores, I still expect this to be a very popular eBook.

And with no forethought or planning on my part, the artwork that was completed for the colored version, matches the specs given to me by PublishGreen perfectly so, that was a nice surprise! In other words, except for making a couple very small technical changes in the art for PublishGreen, it's all done.
