UPDATE #2: PREPARATIONS & BEHIND THE SCENES
Big thanks for the support of our project Sensoria so far. We’ve reached 15% of our funding. And it is all you! We still have a long way to go to reach our goal, and we need your help to do it! So keep supporting, spreading the word, and share the project.
Since we launched our Kickstarter project for Sensoria we’ve been busy doing make up and costume tests, rehearsals and trying out some of the SFX. Here’s a short behind the scenes video featuring Lanna Olsson who plays Caroline.
UPDATE #1: SENSORIA T-SHIRTS
"Every great dream begins with a a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world." - Harriet Tubman
SO, WHAT'S UP?
It’s a challenge to finance a film. Any kind of film, anywhere, even more so at the moment. It’s even harder to finance a genre film in Sweden. At least through the traditional channels and especially if you don’t go through a production company with a long track record and if you haven't already done ten films or more…
This is where Kickstarter comes in! This is where you come in! Friends, family, fanboys, fangirls, friends of friends, acquaintances, the stranger on the other side of the Internet, that guy I met on the train today. The online film community. The supporters of creative arts. We want to make this film with you and for you. We are passionate about films in general and genre films in particular, and in making genre films with a Scandinavian touch for a world market. We hope that you are as passionate as we are, and that you want to come with us on this adventure and make "Sensoria" come to life.
"Sensoria" is a smaller, more personal film, than the other screenplays we have written. A film for which we don’t want to sign away all of our artistic control, which is often the case when you get traditional investments in a film. You end up loosing “the final cut”, other people, financiers, start making casting choices, and making money oriented decisions to cut the screenplay which ultimately hurts the integrity of the story and the final film.
This is a chance to make "Sensoria" as we want to make it and together with you!
"Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time." - Thomas A. Edison
YOU HAD ME AT HELLO! SO, WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?
Every apartment has a past…
"Sensoria" follows Caroline Menard, a woman in her late thirties, who has lost almost everything she cares for in the world and is searching for a new beginning. She moves into an old apartment and starts to realise that she is not as alone as she thought she was. Just as she is searching for something new, something is searching for her…
Slowly, strange and unexplainable things start to happen, and it escalates until the walls of reality come crashing down on her. What was supposed to be something new and better becomes a living nightmare...
It's a universal story about loss and about losing something, but at the same time it is about belonging somewhere… something we can all relate to.
"Sensoria" is a modern psychological, horror-thriller with a Scandinavian sensibility.
Ring the bell. Step in. But remember, it’s at your own risk!
"Men of broader intellect know that there is no sharp distinction between the real and unreal." - H.P. Lovecraft, The Tomb (1917)
VISUALISING THE UNSEEN - CONCEPT DESIGN
We like to be prepared, to plan, and to do things a little bit old school. Maybe it is the first assistant director in me talking… I’ve always started any film project I’ve ever done, even going back to the first short films I’ve ever made, with making a poster, concept design and/or some sort of storyboards. Having a good plan going in to the shoot is a must in my book. Things will change anyway, since a big part of filmmaking is adapting, reacting, compromising and improvising, but without a good plan this becomes much more demanding and difficult. I also like the creative process of developing a film project.
Plan your work, then work your plan!
Concept art and pre-visualisation also helps to communicate your vision to the rest of the creative team and to your actors. This becomes even more important on a low or micro-budget film since you don’t have the luxury of “buying” yourself out of problems.
On "Sensoria" we've been lucky to work with the immensely talented Concept Designer Matthias Ransheim (Bamse and the City of Thieves) to come up with the concept design for the film. Creative artists like Matthias help filmmakers create the look and tone of the films locations and characters before going into production. Matthias has been involved in a number of projects which focus on fantasy and horror.
"Sensoria" has some really important key scenes that need to be really scary, and to set that tone I wanted to create some key art.
"To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
ALRIGHT, SO WHO ARE YOU GUYS? - THE CREATIVE TEAM
Måns and Christian have been writing together for a number of years now, completing a few feature screenplays none of which have been produced yet. "Sensoria" is our first screenplay in Swedish. We are both genre affectionados, writing and working with genre film in various capacities for the last 20+ years.
Christian Hallman (writer/director-producer) with a long history in film production as 1st AD, Production Manager, Producer and Writer/Director on commercials, TV series, feature films, short films and documentaries, as well as working with promotion of genre films through film festivals. He even had a stint as an actor in the Swedish coming of age comedy "Vackert Väder." Here are a few other productions he has been involved in; "Frostbiten", "Wallander", "Halvvägs till Himlen", "Desperately Seeking Seka" and "Yarden".
Måns F.G. Thunberg (writer) a screenwriter, script editor, screenplay consultant, filmmaker, photographer and musician based in Malmö. He's been working at Swedish Television drama department, the Swedish Film Institute and SF Bio. He wrote the screenplay for "From the Depths of My Heart" a Swedish feature film which is starting it's festival run at the moment.
Malin Welin-France (associate producer) has experience working as a production manager, production coordinator and producer for commercials, music promos and short films ("When Tears Have Fallen"). She also has a past working in the camera department as DOP and 1st / 2nd Assistant Camera. Malin is a creative problem solver and has worked on large and small projects both in Europe and USA.
Janssen Herr our Director of Photography is a talented Tasmanian living in the Swedish outbacks, at one with nature. He has a long background working as a camera operator and DOP on commercials, corporate films, features, music promos and TV. Most recently he was DOP on the Swedish film "Inbrottet".
The aesthetics of a film is very important. Together with the director, the Production Designer is in charge of the overall look of the movie and collaborates closely with the Costume Designer to ensure that the film has a cohesive tone.
I am very happy to be collaborating with Miriam Myrtell on "Sensoria". We have a long history of working together on commercials and short films, and always talked about teaming up on my narrative feature film debut. Her feature film work as Production Designer includes "Mañana", "Dear Alice" and "Framily".
Miriam is an amazing Production Designer.
In the art department team we also have Art Director Anna Ericsson and assistant art director/on set props Emma Sofia Wahlberg.
Costume Design & Make up
Together with the Production Designer, the Costume Designer sets the tone of the film, with the clothes that the characters in the film will wear.
Sandra Haraldsen is our Costume & Make up Designer and together with Ellinor Rosander (Key On-Set Wardrobe and Make up) they will make sure our characters are in synch with the rest of the films aesthetics.
One could say that the three creative stages of a film production are writing the script, shooting the film and then editing the film. It is in the editing that a film comes together. "Sensoria" will be edited by Magnus Gillberg ("Feed the Light", "From the Depths of My Heart", "Making of Frostbite") and myself.
DI Colorist & Finishing
To create the "look" of the film you need a great Colorist. Working closely with the director and the design team the work of the colourist sets the tone of the film. "Sensoria" has two distinctive looks one is the world Caroline lives in, the apartment house and the neighbours the other is the world outside the house.
Our DI Colorist is Ted Karlsson ("Inbrottet", "Det borde finnas regler", "Cirkus Imago")
Music & Sound
Music and sound is a big part of any film, and will play a big part in Sensoria. The soundscape is almost as a sixth character in the film. Both myself and Måns are big fans of music in genre films, from the likes of Claudio Simonetti and Fabio Frizzi to name but a few.
The original motion picture soundtrack for "Sensoria" will be composed, arranged and produced by the amazingly talented Frank Ilfman who most recently scored "Big Bad Wolves" and one of the segments on "The ABC’s of Death 2".
We are so happy to have Frank onboard the project and excited to share the music with you all once it is done.
WHAT ABOUT THE SFX, VFX AND STUNT
"Sensoria" does not include many scenes with effects and/or stunts, but there are a few of them.
We want to go old school with it as much as possible, since that is what we like and also what actually looks best on screen most of the time. Working with mirror effects, reverse shots etc… There will be a handful of VFX shots in the film, but they are there to complement the practical effects and not the other way around.
Working on "Frostbite" both on the development and production I got to work with and know some of the best people working with stunts and effects in the film industry and I've consulted them on the scenes.
Magnus Gillberg is our Special Effects Supervisor.
Our Stunt Coordinator is Deni Jordan ("The Bridge", "BBC Wallander", "Yarden", "Wallander")
MEET THE TALENT
HOW WILL THIS FILM SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY
We already have Scandinavian distribution. We also have an extensive network within the genre film festival community. A festival strategy is in place, and we will keep you updated on when and where it will be screened. We will bring the film to international film markets and through our contacts we’ll find an international sales agent for the film.
This being said though, there are no guarantees for a film to be screened at any festival as it is at the discretion of the festival programmers. But we will do our best and more to get the film out there for you to see.
We have a talented team behind and in front of the camera, all with many years of experience from film & TV production and we are all coming together to pour our heart and soul into "Sensoria". Passion is our lead word!
We wrote the story specifically to be able to shoot it with few means. Taking in to consideration few locations and few characters so that we can film it in a shorter time period.
HOW WILL THE RESOURCES BE SPENT
If we get fully funded all the money (besides what goes to fulfilling the pledges/rewards) will be used as the cash budget on the shoot, complementing the cash we already have in place. The money will go to props, costume, make up, SFX, location costs, logistics and much more, as well as feeding the cast and crew Swedish elk meatballs.
As mush as possible of the funds will be put in front of the camera. The film will get made!
All salaries for cast or crew will be on a deferred basis, and is an investment of their time and expertise in the film.
It is their passion and yours that will make "Sensoria" happen!
The three great essentials to achieve anything worth while are: Hard work, Stick-to-itiveness, and Common sense." - Thomas A. Edison
The exclusive Sensoria stickers designed just for our backers. Not finalised at the moment, but they will look very much like below.
CONCLUSION, WHY KICKSTARTER
The idea is that you, who are reading this, will be both our financiers and our audience, so that we can deliver the un-compromised vision of our movie "Sensoria" directly to you. The un-cut version. It’s storytelling, unfiltered, raw, energetic and vibrant, the way it should be seen. Directly from the author to the viewer.
This is our first time using Kickstarter. We don’t know if it will work, but it is worth trying. And we think the idea of Kickstarter is exciting enough, and we are believers. Believers that you want to see the film we want to make.
THE FINAL CUT
The finished film will be between 85-90 minutes long.
TIME TO WRAP IT UP

5. Now the next journey begins. Your rewards will be sent to you. The film will be screened at some really cool film festivals and you will hopefully see it sooner than later.
If you have any questions, just want to hang and/or talk genre film, hit us up on
We trust in you, the soldiers of creative freedom, on the final frontier of independent cinema! You are our only true hope! We thank you in advance for making this ride possible.
Christian Hallman & Måns F.G. Thunberg, on behalf of the entire cast and crew of "Sensoria".
Risks and challenges
Well, the biggest risk is that the film does not get funded here on Kickstarter, which probably means there will be no film. In which case the money you pledged goes back to you.
Sensoria will most probably never get traditional financing through the Swedish Film Institute here in Sweden. There is a very strong chance that we won’t be able to make the film if our Kickstarter campaign is not successful.
We have budgeted the goal so that once we reach it we will be able to deliver our rewards to our backers. The funds not being used for the rewards will all go to realising the film; props and set design, location fees and costs, wardrobe and make up, SFX, to feed the crew Swedish meatballs with lingon berries and more... This is made possible because all the amazing and passionate people involved with "Sensoria" are working on a deferred basis and investing their time in the film. We are excited and ready to get to work!
The biggest challenge is as always distribution. We are on the upside of that though. Sensoria has Scandinavian distribution as mentioned before so when the film gets made, it will be released and not end up gathering dust on a shelf somewhere.
We do not however have international distribution yet. We are doing this ourselves. Not having large financiers, international distribution or a sales agent attached at this time can also be a blessing in disguise. This gives us more creative freedom to make our film together with you.
THE SMALL PRINT
• You must be over 18 or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian (who will count as your plus one) to attend the premiere or visit the set.
• The final cut of the film may have to be further edited in certain cases to adhere to the laws in the country which it is being viewed, or for different types of media.
• This fundraising campaign is all subject to applicable Kickstarter rules/regulations, movie guild rules and applicable law. If any of this conflicts, we will work with you in good faith to give you a substitute reward.
In practical terms, we have set the estimated delivery dates so that we will have (hopefully) apt time to complete everything and also ship it out to all of our backers, however there is always a chance of delays when it comes to printing and shipping and such. We are as excited for you to get the stuff as you (hopefully) are to receive it. We will keep you informed and up to speed on the fulfilment process once we get to that stage.
Making a film is a crazy endeavour, with a lot of unknown factors. Many things have to align to make one thing happen, everyone working towards the same vision. We are starting on good grounds with a good script, the best possible team and a well worked plan. It's impossible to predict the outcome or guarantee that everything will come together as thought out but in the end we will have created a movie that hopefully all of us can be proud of. Thank you all for coming on this journey with us.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
