From the time I first saw quail I knew they were the key to home food production especially in urban and suburban environments. Caging was critical though. It had to be flexible, versatile and give the birds some access to the outdoors. Chicken paddocks and tractors don’t work well for any of this, and most good cages are designed for factory farming not private owners and small businesses.
While quail in and of themselves; produce a great quantity of eggs and meat and are easily home processed. They also produce waste, require feed expense and upkeep. What is needed is a system that integrates the waste stream, the quail production (meat and eggs), while also reducing feed cost and upkeep. In order to meet these needs we have created The Quail Tracker.
The Quail Tracker is a unique and innovative way for raising quail at home. The Quail Tracker is purpose built to provide the best quality housing for quail, while also being extremely versatile and adaptable to any situation. The rugged construction and selection of materials was deliberately chosen to be extremely durable and able to hold up whatever the elements can throw at it. The care and craftsmanship that goes into each cage being individually handmade in the U.S.A. ensures the highest quality product that will provide you and your family with many years of service.
The Quail Tracker majors in versatility, with only a few modifications even chicks as young as 4 days old can be housed, weather permitting, virtually eliminating the need to have a brooder. Simply add a heat lamp, and some cardboard for the flooring after 1-2 weeks remove the cardboard and lamp and enjoy not having a brooder to clean out. Not only is The Quail Tracker an excellent housing system for raising quail, it is also a great option for other poultry as well.
The Quail Tracker is the perfect housing system for transitioning other young poultry from a brooder to free range life. Being designed to accommodate small birds, while also being robust and predator proof, The Quail Tracker has proven to be an extremely versatile homesteading tool for transitioning chickens, ducks and even turkeys to an outdoor environment while minimizing stress.
Another way that we have tried to create the most versatile product is by adding accessory hatches on the sides of the cage. These hatches allow you to attach a number of different accessories depending on your situation and allow you to fully customize your housing system to perfectly fit your needs, and the needs of your animals.
Our all metal coop attachment is a great way to add extra space for your cage, as well as add a solid structure for the birds to escape harsh weather conditions. Featuring all metal construction, an elevated wire floor to keep the area from soiling up, and an easy access lockable flip top.
Another great way to employ the versatility of the accessory hatches is with a mesh row cover. Simply fasten one end around the hatch door and snake the mini aviary through your garden. The birds will love the extra space, and ability to explore, while you get the added benefit of organic pest control, fertilizer and some light ground working.
Yet another way side hatches can be utilized is with a removable compost cage. These cages are made of the same high quality material as the cage and will hold up to many years of use in the elements. These cages allow you to give your birds access to kitchen and garden scrapes, without soiling up the floor. The quick detachable design allows you to dump spent scraps, rinse and replace in minutes.
These are just a few examples of the versatility that the side accessory doors bring to the quail tracker. By combining this with an open source stance on attachments for companies and entrepreneur we hope to help create nearly unlimited setup combinations making the quail tracker the ultimate flexibility and versatility in raising quail.
Why Tractor Quail?
Tractoring quail is an absolutely fantastic way to raise them. Not only does it give the birds access to fresh air, bugs and grasses to eat. Tractoring quail also has the added benefit of increasing soil fertility and reducing labor by completely eliminating having to empty and clean poop trays, a huge win.
By applying this triple bottom line approach to taking care of people, caring for the animals and benefiting the environment to The Quail Tracker we have created a completely unique way of raising quail at home. Not only did we apply these principles to the design of The Quail Tracker, but also to the material selection and manufacturing.
Being completely opposed to the disposable culture trend in our society, we have taken the opposite approach and focused on the best quality, longest lasting product that we can make. Our product is made from PVC coated heavy 16 gauge cage wire that will hold up to the elements, clean up easily and keep the birds protected from would be predators. Each of our cages is individually handmade and assembled in the USA.
Why Raise Quail?
Raising quail is for anybody that wants to take responsibility for their families food supply by producing some of the highest quality protein available. Quail fit in perfectly into many situations, from small urban and suburban gardens to larger farms and homesteads. Quail also have an amazingly fast return on investment. Their eggs and meat are healthy, nutritious and highly regarded by gourmet chefs and foodies alike. Because of this demand and the niche market of quail production; quail products fetch a premium over other poultry. Quail eggs sell for an average of $4/dz, live birds $5 each and quail meat $15/lb, if you can even find it. This premium on quail products, combined with their meager feed cost and space requirements make quail an outstanding addition to any homestead and allow anyone with even a small backyard to build a local food business
Quail are prolific layers, laying up to 300 eggs per year, and will start laying in as little as 2 months, compared to 6 months for chickens or ducks. They only consume on average 2lbs of feed per month, and in return for the care that you give them they will provide you with some of the most nutritious eggs on the planet. The Quail Tracker can house anywhere from a couple to a couple of dozen laying hens, depending on your land and management.
If you are also looking to add a meat yield to your home production, it’s hard to beat quail. Quail reach slaughter weight in as little as 5 weeks, and given that you can determine how many you want and when by incubating, you can raise as many or as few as you want based on your needs. A great way to utilize The Quail Tracker for a meat yield is to hatch out 30 birds. Raise them until the males start to crow, week 5-6. Process the males to keep it quiet and let the females finish out to week 8-10. Doing this will net you 8-10lbs of ethically raised, antibiotic free, hormone free, locally raised, gourmet meat available nowhere else.
Risks and challenges
While every project has inherent risks and challenges to it, we have sought to minimize them through extensive research and development. Our product has been tested for over a year in environments ranging from 100+ degree Texas summer days to -10 degree Michigan winter nights. What has emerged is a product that has proven to be extremely versatile and adaptable to any environment.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
