Funding goal reached!! Sincere thanks to all my backers!
New (unlikely) stretch goal: AU$2000 = promo budget
Future Ghost is a blend of old-school 2D point & click adventure game with JRPG battles thrown in. It tells the story of Song, a semi-retired kungfu master who achieves immortality in the first 15 minutes of the game, with the rest of its intended 4-6 hours' play time being about the consequences of that immortality.
As this is a story I've been working on in one way or another for the past 20 years, and only now feel is taking shape in a way I feel confident in releasing publicly, I want to be able to afford to protect my IP and pay the Steam application fee, which is where the Kickstarter community comes in, I hope.
The demo of Future Ghost is already available for Windows, Mac, Linux and Android, at www.futureghostgame.com. I'm developing it in RPG Maker MV, but it doesn't look at all like an RPG Maker game, as I'm using all my own sprites and so on. In fact it looks, and for the most part plays, a lot more like an adventure game from the 90s.
Risks and challenges
Initially, learning how to use RPG Maker MV, the engine for Future Ghost, was a bit of a challenge. However, with my background as an illustrator, 2D animator, indie game developer and IT teacher, it didn't take me too long at all to get my head around it.
From hereon in though, I see the biggest challenge as being the length of the game's story; the finished script runs to 150 pages. So keeping my momentum and creative juices going will be the toughest part, I imagine. That's a big part of why I decided to do a Kickstarter campaign; to hopefully connect with people who are interested in what I'm doing, to help me keep going.
On top of that are costs such as trademark registration and application fees for Steam and other delivery platforms. Please see the associated Update for a breakdown of how I plan to cover those costs through Kickstarter contributions. Being that this is a one-man project, done in my own time while juggling paid work and family, all other financial costs are negligible.
The projected completion time is mid-2018, but with the right motivation and a bit of luck, it might get done even sooner.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
