Nontraditional tells the story of Erika Byrd, a 26-year old female combat veteran who is now a freshman in college. Erika contends with freshman classes, noisy neighbors, well-meaning classmates, and demanding professors. She struggles with this transition, and the temptation to return to the structure of the military is strong. Will she have the courage to confront this kind of transformation and plunge headlong into a new life? Will she mistake it for some kind of idealistic nonsense? Will real change, however incremental, just seem too hard for her?
Nontraditional is a feature-length drama that we intend to send out on the festival circuit in 2014, and we need your help to do it.
This is a story that we have been wanting to tell for years. In 2008, we talked with almost a dozen female student veterans about their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as their experiences as nontraditional college students. Though all student veterans face a difficult transition, female veterans often face additional struggles. Student veterans have so much to offer, just as the college experience has a lot to offer them, but it all starts with the ability to recognize these opportunities. We think this film can help with that.
We have self-funded production, and principal photography will take place during the month of July in Potsdam, NY. If we meet our funding goal, we will be able to pay for the kind of post-production work that will make this project shine. We will use your contributions to pay for the musical score, color correction, a solid sound mix, and delivery to the multiple submission formats we will need for festivals.
Risks and challenges
If we meet our funding goal, then our biggest obstacle will be behind us once we complete principal photography at the end of July. Of course, it doesn't get easy after that! We will still have a short deadline to complete a cut of the film that's good enough for the early-autumn festival deadlines. Even when we make those deadlines, we will need to continue refining the editing, assembling a press kit, and doing our best to reach the widest audience possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
