THE STORY BEHIND 7EVEN DYNAMICS, Inc.
While cycling on a mid day training ride in 2010, I was hit from behind by a truck, sustaining fractures in my neck and back. Here is the bike I was riding:
Despite not knowing literally what hit me, I was very grateful to be alive. After my release from the emergency room in 36 hours, I made a conscious decision not just to come back to normal health but take the opportunity to apply all my 30 years of competitive racing and training to make a comeback to world class racing in the duathlon (run-bike-run).
Just One YEAR after the accident, I raced at the National Duathlon Championships in Tucson, AZ placing 8th in my age group, qualifying for the World Duathlon Championships for TEAM USA. Four months later I raced at Worlds in Spain placing 7th.
In striving for the podium again, I noticed my shoe changing transitions from the bike to running were very slow. I really needed a better way to get in/out of shoes faster and velcro, stretch laces just didn't work well enough. I went to my bicyle mechanic in town and asked him if he could solve this problem and two weeks later we had our first prototype pair of shoes! Three weeks later I raced in SHOE #1 at 2012 National Duathlon Championships and cut significant time off my previous year! It worked!!
SHOE FIT PROBLEMS
We didn't stop with one innovation but realized we had the opportunity to completely redesign the ENTIRE shoe upper to help eliminate heel pain, prevent losing toenails, hammer toes and other feet problems I had experienced over 30 years of running.
We noticed that keeping the pressure off the top of the foot's nerve center was like wrapping the foot not squeezing the toes. We really DISCOVERED a better FITTING shoe!
We continued to iterate on the various types of closures from a basic dial and outer clips to no dials or velcro, redesigning from toe to heel.
Here is a little archived footage I took to record what types of things we were doing:
WHAT'S BEHIND THE "NO LACES AND TONGUE"?
So what is the science behind why side closure works? Since we filed our utility patent, we can divulge a few things here.
We started with the 36 distinct foot measurements in footwear (courtesy of our adviser, Reden Reyes)
We knew we had to take the pressure off the top of the foot to the side.
We iterated on a side closure until we found non-invasive points on the foot and it is the basis of our technical closure with 7 points of contact:
By wrapping the foot, getting the pressure off the top of the foot, providing adjustments that work, you allow the foot to naturally do what it is supposed to do.
The foot is widest at the toes. splays 15%, half an inch in length under load and our closures solve this problem with a sock like fit in the toe box.
We realized we could do something really BIG! We could change the world of footwear fit forever. So, we put our up our VISION statement:
7Even Dynamics is a shoe technology company that delivers massive innovation of footwear FIT, FORM and FUNCTION and creates happy feet with customized logos/colors that suit your everyday activities. We create a family of shoes that combine the best materials, factory practices, science behind foot dynamics and fashion to give you a personalized fit. Our footwear focus begins with baby feet, to children running their fastest PE miles in school, cross country and track runners, golfers, triathletes/duathletes, those rehabilitating from surgeries or traumas, cyclists, hikers, walkers and even helps those dress fashionably while transitioning in/out of airport security.
AND, WE ARE ON A MISSION!
We think we can build a $1B company in ten years! Why not! We are not just talking about running shoes, but there are SEVEN DYNAMIC FEET CATEGORIES to work with:
1. Run-Road, Triathlon, Dirt, Multi-Sports, Basketball
2. Elements-Snow, Ice, Trail-Rocks
3. Wheels-Bicycle, Skate, Motorcycle
4. Dress-travel, on their feet a lot, teachers, security, delivery, health workers
5. Cleated-Soccer, Baseball, Golf, Football, Lacrosse
6. Rackets-Squash, Tennis, Racketball
7. Sandal-Sport, Beach, Casual Dress
The well respected online shoe company Zappos, built their revenues to $1B in 7 years; Crocs is over $1B; Vibram with their new 5 toe shoe reached 2% of all running shoe sales in 4 years.
WHY BUSAN, SOUTH KOREA NOW?
We decided to source a manufacturer over in the shoe mecca of Busan, South Korea to determine if anyone could make these radically different shoes. And, what we did was to find and make KT Kim a company co-founder who had 25 years of shoe experience from all over the world. He took us into 20 factories in Busan. That is out of 300!! Busan is the shoe mecca of the world with 60 years of experience in making shoes. We saw the most cutting edge factory processes, injection molding, lightweight materials, quality control, innovation and serious productivity that can turn out 2,000 pairs of shoes per day per line! There is stuff they do no one else in the world can!
THE NEW BUSINESS MODEL
While touring and considering Busan as our go-to factory center, we realized we could not only change shoe upper technologies but the ENTIRE LEGACY FOOTWEAR SUPPLY CHAIN PROCESS. That is, we could design customized shoes, test them, manufacture and ship them over in 10 days to the USA without duty! We could shorten the traditional shoe futures retail buying model by 6x from 18 months to a mere 3 months from start of a new model to commercial delivery.
THE FAMILY JUST GREW!
We went over to Busan with a couple running shoe prototypes and came back 3 weeks later with baby shoes, trail running, walking, kids sport casual models, sport sandals, and golf shoes. Our family of marketable shoes just multiplied overnight!
We now had the production, tested prototypes and operations nailed. However, we needed the awesome marketing gurus with the legs to get us to market. Immediately we attracted Eric and Rachel, the most inspirational, professional, top business athletes you could hope to work with. We just added 50 years of health, wellness, running, racing, training experience with both of them!
Were we ready to delivery? Almost. I met Marianna online while looking to fill our Head Designer position. Marianna is from Greece and has been designing sneakers from the age of 5. She studied shoe making in Italy and had a huge portfolio of experiences.
Immediately she jumped in to design the TEAM USA shoes and then proceeded to unleash creative talent on country flag shoes.
Now, we have started gaining the attention of triathlon coaches worldwide. We also debuted our club-corporate shoe capabilities at the Silicon Valley Sports League games in Palo Alto, where the likes of Facebook, Google, Linked-In, 500 Start-Ups and Reputation competed heavily to win pairs of our customized shoes.
Here is a short video of the competition, winners and the design we put together for them!
After more than a year of thorough development, daily training and race testing, my partner and I had put everything we had financially into this. We realized our investor contacts in Silicon Valley were not looking to invest in manufacturing. So, we decided to reach out to YOU, our potential customers to help us spread the word, try the shoes, tell us all about the differences you feel in FIT with a wrap abound the foot, more ventilation and the elimination of plastic heel counters.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We have done all the "heavy lifting" in the company in terms of factory education in making the new upper designs, selecting the right factory for each shoe category, making sure we did our patent filings and prototype testing at the highest levels of competition. Our risks are not in delivering the best footwear since our factories have been making and globally shipping footwear since the 60's. Frankly our challenges will come in delivering the best customer service, in making sure the proper sizes are delivered, that if there are any technical problems or issues that we immediately help the customer, if sizes don't fit we enable an easy return policy and we get better with each year of operation. We will have growing pains as any start-up does, will make mistakes along the way, and we will need to hire the best, most passionate folks to help us build a very large globally based company.
Our only industry risk medium term is that another company decides to copy us forcing us to defend our intellectual property. That might be a good thing since a broad base of happy customers will help us reinforce our allegiances in the marketplace. We have a strong factory network that will keep our intellectual property secure and have it in their best interests to see our success in this new footwear design. We all win.
