About this project
The Urban Homesteaders' League Market Stand will be an experiential learning space at the Union Square Farmers Market in Somerville, MA where visitors can learn skills for sustainable urban living and creative domesticating. Members of the UHL (and other interested folks) will lead skillshares on a wide variety of subjects, and visitors will also be able to take home free informational broadsides; swap items they've made or grown at the UHL Swap Table; browse the traveling UHL library; and meet other people interested in urban homesteading. The stand will take place twice a month from June-October. The UHL Market Stand is a collaborative project conceived and designed by UHL founder and artist Lisa Gross. A version of this project was presented in March 2010 at the Museum of Science, Boston.
About the UHL
The Urban Homesteaders’ League (www.urbanhomesteadersleague.org) is a community venture based in Cambridge, MA dedicated to inspiring and empowering individuals and communities to shift from a lifestyle of passive consumption to one of active participation, creation, and connection. We are committed to re-imagining the good life as one that is meaningful, pleasurable, environmentally sustainable, and socially just. We place the home at the center of that pursuit and see it as a site for personal and societal transformation.
We teach workshops and skillshares, and organize potlucks, field trips, stuff-swaps, and film screenings. We do many of these things in collaboration with other local groups and organizations. All our workshops and events are low cost or offered on a sliding scale basis.
The Kickstarter Campaign
We plan to use our Kickstarter funding to:
--- Purchase necessary equipment for the stand (a collapsible tent, folding tables, carts, stools, signage, a tabletop stove, a handcrank blender).
--- Print free informational broadsides to be distributed at the stand.
--- Make a short film about the project.
--- Create promotional posters.
--- Provide a stipend for Lisa Gross, the project director.
In addition to supporting the project through Kickstarter, there are many ways to support and participate in the project:
--- Lead a 15-20 minute skillshare on a topic of your choice and then chat with visitors in between skillshares about your skillshare subject. (Contact Lisa Gross at Lisa.Gross@gmail.com if interested.)
--- Make or grow something to swap at the UHL Swap Table. If you're swapping something you've made, include the recipe/directions for making it so the recipient can give it a go!
--- Visit the stand! Come hang out, learn something new, and meet other people interested in urban homesteading.
--- Follow the project on the UHL blog: www.urbanhomesteadersleague.org/blog/
The stand will take place at the Union Square Farmers’ Market in Somerville, MA on June 19th, 26th, July 17th, 31st, August 14th, 21st, September 11th, 25th, October 9th, 23rd, 30th. The market takes place from 9am-1pm.
