Hey everyone! Ben Hsu here, collectively, Elaine Tipping and I create Dubious Company, a webcomic. When Elaine and I first started Dubious Company it was just for practice. I was attempting to learn how to write more cohesive dialogue and Elaine wanted to improve her art skills. What better way to practice both our crafts than starting a webcomic whose intent was to poke fun at the tried and true anime clichés we all know and love?
Dubious Company loosely follows the tale of "Captain" Walter Hernidale, winged air-pirate, his best friend, Tiren the ninja catgirl, and the rest of their friends as they continuously fail to do anything productive. In fact, they often fail to do anything at all, but in the most humorous fashion. If you haven't read the comic yet, you can join the fun at the main website Dubiouscompany.com.
Synopsis aside, Dubious Company has grown enough that Elaine and I have moved from "practice" status to "we make a webcomic, it's pretty popular, you should check it out," status. Since we've grown so much, we now feel the need to put out Volume One of Dubious Company. We're planning on this being a softcover, black and white, manga style book that roughly covers the first 276 strips. Sadly, we need $1500 to produce it.
But that's where you all come in! If you love the comic, or at least are vaguely interested in the comic and want to support us, please contribute to this Kickstarter. Over on the right panel we have a lovely list of reward for each contribution level and I guarantee that you will like all of them.
Actually, there are a couple of reward levels mentioned in the video, collective reward levels, that I can’t list as rewards proper. I’d like to go over those a bit further:
Reaching Our Goal of $1500.
For Reaching our goal we will update the first 10 comics. These comics (pages 1-10) will have new art and writing. The story will stay the same, they’ll just be touched up, polished and revised with the newer style of both writing and art. Remember this is a collective goal so every contribution helps, even if you can only contribution 1 dollar, it will work the Kickstarter toward this reward.
Every $150 past our goal, up to $3000.
For everyone 150 dollars collectively contributed past our goal of $1500 we will give the upgrade treatment to another comic strip. These are good up to a total of $3000 dollars contributed, so if the Kickstarter generates $3000 dollars, that’s 20 comics that get the upgrade treatment. As before, this is a collective reward, so any amount you contribute, no matter how much will help everyone reach these rewards.
The great part about these levels (besides everyone is working together toward them) is that we’ll update the comics on both the web and in the printed volume, so your fun will be doubled!
Oh, for the $50 contribution level. I know I said there are 15 available, and there are, but it's not subtracting properly for people who choose a higher reward level. Just remember, the first 15 people who contribute $50 dollars or more get the Evil Tower of Evil.
One last thing, for those of you who were curious, Elaine has actually finished the first of the three prints that we’re giving out for the $70, $85, and $100 contribution levels, and here it is:
I’ll post the other two as she finishes those up. And you can find more of her work at her deviant art:http://triaelf9.deviantart.com/.
UPDATE #1: The second of the three prints is finished:
Again, these prints are rewarded for the $70 and up contribution range.
UPDATE #2: As promised we're plugging away at updating the first 10 pages (and hopefully 20 pages if we reach 3000 dollars). But here's the redone first page. Keep it up and you guys will get to see more of these (at the book release).
UPDATE #3: Final Print Viewable
The last of the three prints available for rewards at the $70 backing level (or higher). I must say, they're looking really nice.
UPDATE # 4: Thought you guys would enjoy seeing the redone page 12. Just a few more dollars and the first 20 pages will get that treatment.
Also, because you guys have been so great to us, we've decided to throw in a couple of extra group rewards:
At $3000 dollars, not only will the first 20 pages be revised, but we'll give everyone a desktop background, at $3500, everyone will get two desktop backgrounds. That's anyone who backed us, regardless of level.
So that is it, thank you for your time and please contribute to our Kickstarter and help make this already wonderful comic even better.
Do you guys ship internationally/how much extra should I pledge to get my reward if I live outside the US?
Yes, of course we'll ship internationally. Part of the fun of being on the Internet is being able to reach an audience worldwide. As for whether you should pledge any extra...well, it helps. Shipping to say...Australia or Japan costs about 10 dollars extra, and even shipping over to the UK will cost between 5 and 6 dollars extra. But it's not required; whatever reward level you guys choose, we'll make sure it gets to you.
