Ever Eve is about a moment. A scary, surreal, Kafka-esque moment, that I think anyone could relate to – the moment of glancing in the mirror and finding you are not what you expect. In our story lovely young Evelyn prepares for a date, but when she looks in the mirror she finds the frightening reflection of herself as an old woman. The story brings up the question of whether Evelyn is really the young girl having a nightmare, or the old woman living a nightmare. Can she be both at the same time?
As surreal as this premise sounds, it was inspired by the all too real experience that many face near the end of their lives – the extreme loss of memory caused by dementia, strokes, and Alzheimer’s. I lived with my grandmother as she descended into the first stages of Alzheimer’s. The situation changed moment by moment, whether my grandma would be the charming, spiritual sage I’d always known, or a vulnerable girl searching for her mother. What do we do when she asks for her mother, her old loves – is telling the truth better, or should we go with her delusions? I don’t know.
Whenever she dozed, I wondered whether my grandmother could take refuge in dreams, whether those were more solid than waking reality. Sometimes I too couldn’t help but wonder, how do I know I’m not just dreaming of youth and a reasonable world? Ever Eve is a visual meditation on these questions and the concurrent reality of my grandmother.
I want this film to share an experience that so many might face later in life, to increase awareness about Alzheimer’s, and serve as inspiration to simply seize the day.

The film is visually inspired by old films of the 1930’s as well as the images and advertisements created for fashion icons like Christian Dior. Young Evelyn’s world is a sheer vision of elegance and femininity, a golden dream of things past. The Old Evelyn sequence is a nightmare of institutionalized horror, inspired by Foucault and the uncanny sequences of Un Chien Andalou.
Ever Eve will be submitted to national and international film festivals. The film will be dedicated to organizations searching for the cure and prevention of Alzheimer’s.
