Mancer can be aptly described as an ambitious vision, one where we wished to take inspiration from titles utilizing turn-based combat such as the older Final Fantasy titles, mix in a little bit of Stardew Valley, add multiplayer capability and encourage trading and teaming up to conquer challenges. Suffice to say that this has been a long and arduous road in terms of development, but indeed the Mancer project has been ongoing for over two years.
Yet at some point the question needed to be asked. We toil away at our dream project, we create and we learn, spend countless hours and miss way too much sleep, but never actually measure if there's any outside interest.
That is, in large part, what this Kickstarter is for (and also why the goal is relatively low for a project such as this). We have plans outlined below for funds we receive and of course our endless generosity for those who wish to support the creation of Mancer.
Which brings us to the next point - what even is Mancer?
Mancer is a project with multiple playstyles in mind for multiple kinds of people.
Within Mancer, you create your own character right away. Who is this character? What is their name? Are they a fighter, perhaps they use magic or summon creatures to fight on their behalf in battle? Outside of combat, are they a merchant? Do they have a knack for crafting unique tools and weapons? Perhaps your character spends its free time tilling the land and running a farmstead. Your character, both inside and outside of combat, is who you want it to be.
Perhaps you're a renowned warrior, specializing in the use of a Lance. In your free time, you barter your spoils for coin. This is the perfect fit for the hardened warrior seeking to become the best, but what if instead you were someone who heals people, specializing in the use of a bow, and spending your free time becoming a master chef, utilizing the powerful ingredients found within the world, combined with some monster meat from the enemies you have helped slay.
Within Mancer, players are encouraged to trade with one another to become the strongest they can possibly be. We have placed some focus on economy within the game with over 8 different professions to choose from, each mastering in a certain craft or specialty.
Venturing out into the world, you will discover many varying kinds of areas, different towns with different wares, secrets in the wild, and of course - enemies.
Engaging in combat with an enemy involves your character in turn-based combat with the enemy. This is where our influence of older J-RPG titles really shows. Within this battle, you will use your characters weapon, their skills associated with their class, varying by their weapon of choice, and any means necessary to defeat the enemy, however, this is not something you must do alone.
Party members or even outside players, if you allow it, can join you in battle. But, beware, fair adventurer, for the more players you have in the battle, the more difficult the enemies you face become, but also the more spoils they offer in return.
Mancer offers the player the ability to create a character for use in single player/LAN play or multiplayer play online, this way if you do not wish to play around or with players you do not recognize, you don't have to! However, a character created for single player/LAN play cannot be used in the online multiplayer world.
Every player is given their own land, instanced away from the open world, but accessible through invitation or by those within your party. This land is yours to exploit for your professions and to make a comfortable living, of course.
In the case of the screenshot above, the land yields carrots for farming and trees for lumberjacking, all planted and set up by the player that owns it. Many crop seeds and special items exist only from defeating enemies in the world or hidden as treasures within deep caves. Don't wish to fight? Make use of your strengths within the economy to achieve the land you wish to own. You can earn EXP from crafting, cooking, and other such things through their profession. You can advance without ever slaying a single enemy - your character is your own. If you're not a fighter, then you're not forced to be in order to fully enjoy Mancer.
Many NPCs in towns will offer quests depending on your relationship with them which may correspond exclusively to your profession.
You will encounter many towns with many NPCs to speak with and many quests to partake. Form tight relationships with merchants of towns by completing difficult tasks and more possibilities for trade will open up for you.
However, these lands are not always so kind and gentle. Within the depths of the forests and the winding caverns, an evil stirs.
As you move forward in this big world, the stories behind the cause of this evil begin to unfold. Many warriors have dared to stop what is rumored to be the creation of all monsters and yet none have succeeded. Many must wonder if it is possible at all. Perhaps with the aid of friends, anything can be possible.
In Mancer, there exists a variety of playstyles and class choices for you to mix, match, and obliterate your foes with. For some, the road to victory is paved with the blood of their enemies, but for others, it lay in keeping their friends safe, better ensuring that sought after victory more often than not. Others choose to not get involved at all, specializing in being a merchant, trading with those who dare to risk it all and earning the respect (and coin) of the people.
In this dangerous world, where do you stand?
Thank you for taking the time to check out our Kickstarter! We're hoping to have a demo on the way sometime soon, although it's hard to give a definitive timeframe on something such as that without leading to delays and disappointment.
We will keep you all posted as much as possible throughout the development of Mancer and hope to see that there are many more who are as excited for this game as we are!
In light of our influx of support, we've agreed upon the following for stretch goals regarding the funding of Mancer:
If you would like to support Mancer by buying an additional copy of our project, then you may do so via the Paypal link below. Please send $7.00 USD and include the word Mancer somewhere in your notes (although we'll probably know what it's for regardless). Definitely include an e-mail address we can use to send the game(s) once it's completed and ready.
Please do not try and back higher tiers of our project through Paypal, this not only strikes an issue with the Kickstarter platform itself but also makes it more difficult for us to deliver what we've promised in an official capacity.
Risks and challenges
Mancer is our dream project. No matter what becomes of this Kickstarter, we have full plans to finish what we have started. This game started as an idea between friends and is slowly but surely becoming a reality. With this Kickstarter, we'll potentially be able to hire outside help to better smooth the process of Mancer's creation. If not, the project will continue regardless.
But, these are all just words, and they can seem so empty when displayed on a screen. If you feel Mancer is not worth backing then we appreciate you coming to check it out anyway. That still means a lot to us.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
